My Faith Looks up to Thee

Author: Ray Palmer, 1808-1887 Hymnal: Hymnal and Order of Service #271 (1901) Meter: 6.6.4.6.6.6.4 Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Saviour divine! Now hear me while I pray; Take all my guilt away; Oh, let me from this day Be wholly Thine. 2 May Thy rich grace impart Strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire; As Thou hast died for me, Oh, may my love to Thee Pure, warm, and changeless be, A living fire. 3 While life's dark maze I tread, And griefs around me spread, Be Thou my Guide; Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow's tears away, Nor let me ever stray From Thee aside. 4 When ends life's transient dream, When death's cold sullen stream Shall o'er me roll; Blest Saviour, then, in love, Fear and distrust remove; Oh, bear me safe above, A ransomed soul. Salvation unto us has come

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #314 (1918) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor, Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never: Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is the Mediator. 2 What God doth in His Law demand No man to Him can render, And so He draws His flaming brand To punish the offender: Our flesh has not those pure desires Which first of all the Law requires, So we're in condemnation. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given For us to keep and merit claim-- And earn our way to heaven: God's Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to sight That lurks within our nature. 4 By our own strength to put aside God's wrath, and win His blessing, Is useless task, by many tried, Is only guilt increasing: For God hypocrisy abhors; Flesh with the spirit ever wars, For 'tis by nature evil. 5 And yet, the Law fulfilled must be Or we were lost forever; Therefore God sent His Son, that He Might us from death deliver; He all the Law for us fulfilled, And thus His Father's anger stilled Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ hath full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation: Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death my life now is indeed, For Thou hast paid my ransom. 7 Not doubting this, I trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken; Thou all dost call, "Come unto me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken: "He that believes and is baptized, He shall be saved," say'st Thou, O Christ, "And he shall never perish." 8 He's just 'fore God, and he alone, Who by this faith is living; This faith will by good works be known, To God the glory giving; Faith gives thee peace with God above, But thou thy neighbor too wilt love, If thou art a new creature. 9 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes man conscience-stricken; The gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the Cross, trust Christ and live; The Law to you no peace can give With all its good endeavors. 10 From faith in Christ, whene'er 'tis right, Good works are surely flowing; The faith is dead that shuns the light, No good works ever showing: By faith alone the just shall live, Good works alone the proof can give Of love, which true faith worketh. There Is A Blessed Power

Author: J. C. Aaberg Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #129 (1930) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: The Means of Grace Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 There is a blessed power That shields us from all woe, And like a mighty tower Protects us from the foe; It is the faith abiding In Jesus Christ, our Lord; It is the faith confiding In God's own blessed Word. 2 By faith was Moses guided To reach the promised land And Israel provided With manna from God's hand; In want and tribulation, Exposed to fire and sword, God's children found salvation By faith in Christ, the Lord. 3 When shades of night enclose us And griefs our hearts dismay, When foes with might oppose us And friends our trust betray, In fear and tribulation We take the shield of faith, And with this consolation We fight the pow'rs of death. 4 Arise, then, all believers, Lift high this mighty shield; The strongest arrow shivers Against its gleaming field; And ye shall walk protected From Satan's wiles and might Until in grace perfected Ye dwell with God in light. The Peace Of God Protects Our Hearts

Author: J. C. Aaberg; N. F. S. Grundtvig Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #134 (1930) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Means of Grace Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 The peace of God protects our hearts Against the tempter’s fiery darts; It is as sure when darkness falls As when the golden morning calls. 2 This is the peace our Savior wrought When on the cross the foe He fought; And when to heav'n He upward soared His peace He left us in His Word. 3 His word of peace new strength imparts Each day to faint and troubled hearts, And in the cup and at the font It satisfies our deepest want. 4 This blessed peace our Lord will give To all who in the Spirit live; Yea, even at their parting breath They peacefully await their death. 5 But know, ye people of the Lord, That only this can help afford: That hearts believe to righteousness And tongues the word of peace confess. 6 For when the Lord our peace had won, He asked for faith, and faith alone. By faith, and not our merits vain, We grace and peace from God obtain. 7 Peace be with thee, the Savior saith In answer to our word of faith; Whoso has faith, he shall have peace And live in joy that ne'er shall cease. Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #377 (1941) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Scripture: Romans 3 Languages: English Tune Title: ES IST DAS HEIL
