'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said

Author: C. W. Everest (1814-1877) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #114 (1987) Topics: Lent 2, The King and the Kingdom Conflict Lyrics: 1 'Take up your cross,' the Saviour said, 'if you would my disciple be; deny yourself, forsake the world, and humbly follow after me.' 2 Take up your cross — let not its weight fill your weak soul with vain alarm; his strength shall bear your spirit up, and brace your heart, and nerve your arm. 3 Take up your cross, nor heed the shame, nor let your foolish pride rebel; the Lord for you the cross endured to save your soul from death and hell. 4 Take up your cross, then, in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; he guides us to a better home, and leads to conquest of the grave. 5 Take up your cross and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only they who bear the cross may hope to win the glorious crown. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Author: Isaac Watts; Pauline Martin Hymnal: Voices United #149 (1996) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Lent 2 Year B First Line: When I survey the wondrous cross (Quand je me tourne vers la croix) Lyrics: 1 When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. 3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4 Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small: love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Languages: English Tune Title: COMMUNION (ROCKINGHAM)

I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #303 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Topics: Year A Lent 2 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Jesus, Refuge of the Weary

Author: Jane F. Wilde, 1826-1896; Girolamo Savonarola, 1452-1498 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #93 (1978) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Lent 2 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, refuge of the weary, Blest redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life's desert dreary, Savior from the world above: Often have your eyes, offended, Gazed upon the sinner's fall; Yet upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all. 2 Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see you wounded, bleeding, See your thorn-encircled brow? Yet your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what your grace has taught us Calms the sinner's deep distress. 3 Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for you; May our eyes be ever turning To behold your cross anew; Till in glory, parted never From the blessed Savior's side, Graven in our hearts forever, Dwell the cross, the Crucified. Lord of our life, and God of our salvation

Author: M. A. von Löwenstern (1594-1648); P. Pusey (1799-1855) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #529 (1987) Meter: 11.11.11.5 Topics: Lent 2, The King and the Kingdom Conflict Lyrics: 1 Lord of our life, and God of our salvation, star of our night, and hope of every nation: hear and receive your church's supplication, Lord God almighty! 2 See round your church the angry tides are swirling, see how your foes their banners are unfurling; Lord, while their darts envenomed they are hurling, you can preserve us. 3 Lord, you can help when earthly armour fails us, Lord, you can save when deadly sin assails us: Lord, when at last that solemn trumpet hails us, keep and protect us! 4 Grant us your help till foes are backward driven, grant them your truth, that they may be forgiven; grant peace on earth and, after we have striven, peace in your heaven. O Jesus, I have promised

Author: J. E. Bode (1816-1874) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #531 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Lent 2, The King and the Kingdom Conflict Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end — be now and ever near me, my Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. 2 O let me feel you near me, the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but Jesus, draw still nearer and shield my soul from sin! 3 O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still; above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will: O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; and speak to make me listen, O Guardian of my soul. 4 O let me see your footmarks and in them place my own; my hope to follow truly is in your strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend.
