Behold, By Grace, And Grace Alone

Author: Ernest William Olson Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #124 (1930) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7.8.8 Topics: The Means of Grace Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Behold, by grace, and grace alone, Hath God the Father from His throne Ordained our full salvation. Unto the utmost ends of earth The Sun of Mercy sendeth forth His light to ev'ry nation. The way of life is open, free, O mortal man, to thee, to thee. 2 Thro' love alone His Son was sent To bear the law's dread punishment For all our dire transgression. Our sins He bore, our guilt He owned, For all our deeds His death atoned-- O bountiful possession! His righteousness is full and free, O sinful man, to thee, to thee. 3 For this o'erwhelming sacrifice The Lord will nevermore despise A contrite heart and spirit. By Jesus' death, by Jesus' blood, Full pleasing in the sight of God, His mercy we inherit. The fount of grace flows full and free, O pardoned soul, for thee, for thee. 4 By faith alone, for Jesus' sake, Each ransomed sinner may partake Of His abounding merit. If in His promise ye abide, By faith shall ye be justified And blessed with His free Spirit. His righteousness the just shall own By faith alone, by faith alone. Hail, Alpha and Omega, Hail

Author: John Cennick, 1718-1755 Hymnal: Hymnal and Liturgies of the Moravian Church #335 (1969) Topics: The Life in Christ Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Hail, Alpha and Omega, hail, Thou Author of our faith, The Finisher of all our hopes, The Truth, the Life, the path. 2 Hail, First and Last, Thou great I AM, In whom we live and move; Increase our little spark of faith, And fill our hearts with love. 3 O let that faith which Thou hast taught Be treasured in our breast, The evidence of unseen joys, The substance of our rest. 4 Then shall we go from strength to strength, From grace to greater grace, From each degree of faith to more, Till we behold Thy face. By grace I'm saved--grace free and boundless!

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #208 (1893) Meter: 9.8.8 Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 BY grace I'm saved--grace free and boundless! My heart, believ'st thou this or not? Why tremblest thou with terror groundless? Has Scripture e'er a falsehood taught? Then this word also true must be: By grace there is a crown for thee. 2 By grace! our works are all rejected, All claims of merit pass for naught; The mighty Saviour, long expected, To us this blissful truth has brought, That He by death redeems our race, And we are saved alone by grace. 3 By grace! mark well these words' true meaning, When thou dost sorrow sin-oppressed, When Satan threats with pride o'erweening, When troubled conscience sighs for rest; What reason cannot comprehend It pleases God by grace to send. 4 By grace His Son, on earth appearing, Vouchsafed beneath thy woe to bend; Hadst thou, damnation justly fearing, Done aught to render Him thy friend? Was't not that He thy welfare sought, And but by grace deliverance wrought? 5 By grace! this ground of our salvation, As long as God is true, endures: What saints have penned by inspiration, What God by His own Word assures, What all our faith must rest upon, Is grace, free grace, through His dear Son. 6 By grace! but think not, thou who livest Securely on in godless ways, That thou,--though all are called,--receivest The promised rest that wakes our praise; By grace none find in heaven a place Who live in sin in hope of grace. 7 By grace! they who have heard this sentence Must bid hypocrisy farewell; For only after deep repentance The soul what grace imports can tell, To sin while grace a trifle seems, To faith it bright with glory beams. 8 By grace the timid hearts that languish, Find access to the Father's heart, When conflicts fierce and bitter anguish Bid all their joy and hopes depart. Where, ofttimes, should I strength obtain, Did grace my anchor not remain! 9 By grace! on this in death I'll rest me, Rejoicing e'en though feeling naught; I know my sin--it oft oppressed me-- But Him, too, who salvation brought: My heart exults—-grief flees apace-- Because my soul is saved by grace. 10 By grace! may sin and Satan hearken! I bear my flag of faith in hand, And pass--for doubts my joy can't darken-- The Red Sea to the Promised Land. I cling to what my Saviour taught, And trust it, whether felt or not. Languages: English

O how great is Thy compassion

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #218 (1893) Meter: 8.7.7 Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 O HOW great is Thy compassion, Faithful Father, God of grace, That upon our wretchedness, That upon man's depravation Thou took'st pity, so that we Might be saved eternally! 2 Thy great love for this hath striven That man from all pain shall free And forever blessed be. Yea, Thy Son Himself hath given, And extends an earnest call To His Supper unto all. 3 And for this our souls' salvation Voucheth Thy good Spirit, Lord, In Thy Sacraments and Word, He doth prosper Thy vocation, Granteth us the gift of faith, That we fear nor hell nor death. 4 Lord, Thy mercy will not leave me-- Truth doth evermore abide-- Then in Thee I will confide; Since Thy Word cannot deceive me, My salvation is to me Well assured eternally. 5 I will praise Thy great compassion, Faithful Father, God of grace, That upon my wretchedness, That upon my depravation Thou took'st pity graciously; Evermore be praise to Thee! Oh, Joy of Joys! God so Did Love

Author: Israel Kolmodin, 1643-1709 Hymnal: Hymnal and Order of Service #268a (1901) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.5.6.7 Topics: Faith and Justification Lyrics: 1 Oh, joy of joys! God so did love This world and show compassion, That He sent down from heaven above His Son for our salvation. So deep in sin this world was bound, Had God His Son not given, Our bonds thus riven, No help had e'er been found, However man had striven. 2 This doth our hearts now satisfy, And quiets all our terrors, That Jesus Christ our Lord did die To save us from our errors. O God, Thy love to us is great! Thy mercies are most tender! Our sole defender, None in this earthly state Thee ample praise can render. 3 He who on Jesus Christ doth trust Shall happy be in heaven; The happiness which once was lost through Jesus Christ is given. For God His Son did never send Here for our condemnation: His incarnation Had for its gracious end Our joy and our salvation. 4 But all who turn from Christ away Shall be condemned forever: Their doom is sealed this very day, And death awaits the ever. For since they willfully refused Salvation to inherit Through Jesus' merit, They stand of sin accused, And so must suffer for it. 5 All who are faithful unto death Are given life forever, The life which is the fruit of faith In Jesus Christ our Saviour. Give us, O Lord, the faith to come And ever cling to Jesus! When death releases Our souls, oh, take them home, To dwell in heavenly places.
