The day of wrath, that dreadful day

Author: Walter Scott; Thomas of Celano Hymnal: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes #578 (1899) Topics: Christ Refuge; Day of Wrath; Judgment; Wrath Of God Lyrics: 1 That day of wrath, that dreadful day, When heaven and earth shall pass away-- What power shall be the sinner's stay? How shall he meet that dreadful day? 2 When, shriv'ling like a parchèd scroll, The flaming heavens together roll, When louder yet, and yet more dread, Resounds the trump that wakes the dead! 3 Oh, on that day, that wrathful day, When man to judgment wakes from clay, Be Thou, O Christ, the sinner's stay, Though heaven and earth shall pass away. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: MEROE

The days and years of time are fled

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #236 (1854) Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Topics: Day of grace after Judgment Lyrics: The days and years of time are fled, Sun, moon, and stars have shone their last; The earth and sea gave up their dead, Then vanished at the archangel's blast; All secret things have been reveal'd, Judgment is pass'd, the sentence seal'd, And man to all eternity What he is now henceforth must be. From Adam to his youngest heir, Not one escaped the muster-roll, Each, as if he alone were there, Stood up, and won or lost his soul; These from the Judge's presence go Down into everlasting woe; Vengeance hath barr'd the gates of hell, The scenes within no tongue can tell. But lo! far off the righteous pass To glory from the King's right hand; In silence, on the sea of glass, Heaven's numbers without number stand, While He who bore the cross lays down His priestly robe and victor crown; The mediatorial reign complete, All things are put beneath His feet. Then every eye in Him shall see, (While thrones and powers before Him fall,) The fulness of the Deity, Where God Himself is all in all: 237 O how eternity will ring With the first note the ransom'd sing! While in that strain all voices blend, Which once begun shall never end. In that unutterable song, Shall I employ immortal breath? Or, with the wicked borne along, For ever die "the second death?" Jesus! my life, my light Thou art; Thy word is in my month, my heart; Lord, I believe,--my spirit save From sinking lower than the grave. Languages: English

Day of wrath that ends the ages!

Author: Dr. A. H. Reynar, 1840-; Thomas of Celano, d. 1255 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #579a (1917) Topics: The Christian Life Time, Death, Eternity; Day Of Wrath; Judgment Lyrics: 1 Day of wrath that ends the ages! All-consuming fire rages! As foretold by saints and sages. 2 Day to men of fear and trembling, When before the Judge assembling, And each sinful deed rememb'ring. 3 Silent tombs are trumpet-shaken Sleeping dead, surprised, awaken All before the throne are taken. 4 With the last assize beginning, Open stands all secret sinning No offence exemption winning. 5 How excuse my ill behaviour? Who for me can now win favour, When e'en just men need a Saviour? 6 Terrors manifold surround Thee, Yet have sinners gracious found Thee, Throw Thine arm of mercy round me. 7 Jesus, shed Thy mercy on me, Thou didst take my flesh upon Thee; Bid me not at last go from Thee. 8 Toilsomely my soul Thou soughtest, On the cross my life Thou boughtest, Lose not that for which Thou foughtest. 9 Mary's sins by Thee remitted, And the thief to bliss admitted, Plead my hope may be permitted. 10 Let that day of lamentation Usher in Thy new creation, Manifest Thy great salvation! Great God, what do I see and hear!

Author: William Bengo Collyer Hymnal: Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes #580 (1899) Topics: Day of Wrath; Judgment; Resurrection of Men; Wrath Of God Lyrics: 1 Great God, what do I see and hear! The end of things created! The Judge of man I see appear, On clouds of glory seated. The trumpet sounds; the graves restore The dead which they contained before: Prepare, my soul, to meet Him. 2 The dead in Christ shall first arise, At the last trumpet's sounding, Caught up to meet Him in the skies, With joy their Lord surrounding: No gloomy fears their souls dismay; His presence sheds eternal day On those prepared to meet Him. 3 But sinners, filled with guilty fears, Behold His wrath prevailing, For they shall rise, and find their tears And sighs are unavailing: The day of grace is past and gone; Trembling, they stand before the throne, All unprepared to meet Him. 4 O Christ, Who diedst and yet dost live, To me impart Thy merit; My pardon seal, my sins forgive, And cleanse me by Thy Spirit. Beneath Thy cross I view the day When heaven and earth shall pass away, And thus prepare to meet Thee. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: LUTHER'S HYMN

Come, ye thankful people, come

Author: Dean Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #628 (1917) Topics: Seasons and Ordinances ; Harvest Hymns; Day Of Wrath; Judgment Lyrics: 1 Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest-home! All is safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin: God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied: Come to God's own temple, come, Raise the song of harvest-home! 2 All the world is God's own field, Fruit unto His praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade, and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear: Lord of harvest, grant that we Wholesome grain and pure may be. 3 For the Lord our God shall come, And shall take His harvest home; From His field shall in that day All offences purge away; Give His angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast; But the fruitful ears to store In His garner evermore. 4 Even so, Lord, quickly come To Thy final harvest-home! Gather Thou Thy people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin; There, for ever purified, In Thy presence to abide: Come, with all Thine angels, come. Raise the glorious harvest-home.
