Salvation unto Us Has Come

Author: Paul Speratus, 1484-1551 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #297 (1978) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Pentecost 18 (Year A) Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our mediator. 2 Theirs was a false, misleading dream Who thought God's law was given That sinners might themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 3 And yet the Law fulfilled must be, Or we were lost forever; Therefore God sent his Son that he Might us from death deliver. He all the Law for us fulfilled, And thus his Father's anger stilled Which over us impended. 4 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone can justify; Works serve our neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 5 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by his grace, All glory to his merit. O triune God in heav'n above, You have revealed your saving love; Your blessed name we hallow. Languages: English Tune Title: ES IS DAS HEIL

All Depends on Our Possessing

Author: Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #447 (1978) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Topics: Pentecost 18 (Year B) Lyrics: 1 All depends on our possessing God's free grace and constant blessing, Though all earthly wealth depart. They who trust with faith unshaken By their God are not forsaken And will keep a dauntless heart. 2 God, who hitherto has fed me And to many joys has led me, Is and ever shall be mine. He who did so gently school me, He who daily guides and rules me, Will remain my help divine. 3 When with sorrow I am stricken, Hope my heart anew will quicken, All my longing shall be stilled. To his loving-kindness tender Soul and body I surrender, For on God alone I build. 4 Well he knows what best to grant me; All the longing hopes that haunt me, Joy and sorrow, have their day. I shall doubt his wisdom never; As God wills, so be it ever; To him I commit my way. 5 If on earth my days he lengthen, God my weary soul will strengthen; All my trust in him I place. Earthly wealth is not abiding; Like a stream away it's gliding; Safe I anchor in his grace. Languages: English Tune Title: ALLES IST AN GOTTES SEGEN

Bridges (1800-1894) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #551 (1987) Topics: Pentecost 18 The Offering of Life Lyrics: 1 My God, accept my heart this day, and make it yours alone; no longer let my footsteps stray, from your belovèd Son. 2 Before the cross of him who died, in awe and shame I fall; let every sin be crucified, and Christ be all in all. 3 Anoint me with your heavenly grace and seal me as your own, that I may see your glorious face and worship at your throne. 4 Let every thought and work and word, to you be ever given; then life shall be your service, Lord, and death the gate of heaven. 5 All glory to the Father be, the Spirit and the Son; all love and praise eternally to God the Three-in-One.
