Come, living God, when least expected

Author: Alan Gaunt (b. 1935) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #615a (2013) Meter: 9.8.9.8 Topics: The Word of God Lyrics: 1 Come, living God, when least expected, when minds are dull and hearts are cold, through sharpening word and warm affection revealing truths as yet untold. 2 Break from the tomb in which we hide you to speak again in startling ways; break through the words in which we bind you to resurrect our lifeless praise. 3 Come now, as once you came to Moses within the bush alive with flame; or to Elijah on the mountain, by silence pressing home your claim. 4 So, let our minds be sharp to read you in sight or sound or printed page, and let us greet you in our neighbours, in ardent youth or mellow age. 5 Then, through our gloom, your Son will meet us as vivid truth and living Lord, exploding doubt and disillusion to scatter hope and joy abroad. 6 Then we will share his radiant brightness, and, blazing through the dread of night, illuminate by love and reason, for those in darkness, faith's delight. Scripture: Exodus 3:1-14 Languages: English Tune Title: SPIRITUS VITRE

By Nature Deaf to Things Divine

Author: Anna Hoppe Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #177 (1926) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7.8.4.4.8 Topics: Hearing the Word of God Lyrics: 1 By nature deaf to things divine, My ears hear not this Word of Thine, The gospel of salvation. By nature dumb to speak Thy praise, My carnal tongue doth fail to raise A song of adoration. Heal Thou me now, blest Physician, In contrition I beseech Thee, Let my prayer and pleading reach Thee. 2 I thank Thee, dear Redeemer mine, That Thou in love and power divine Thy healing word hast spoken. Thy Word indeed doth balm afford, And Thy forgiveness, dearest Lord, The power of sin hath broken. Thy Word, dear Lord, still endureth, And assureth Me, O Saviour, Of Thy everlasting favor. 3 Indeed Thou doest all things well, Incarnate God, Immanuel, Thou promised Saviour, Jesus. My ears can hear Thy Word divine. Which healeth all diseases. Till I sing Thy praise in glory, Let the story Of salvation Be my theme of adoration. Amen. Scripture: Mark 7:31-37 Languages: English Tune Title: WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET DER MORGENSTERN
