Jesus, Lover of My Soul

Author: Charles Wesley Appears in 3,222 hymnals Topics: Refuge--Rock First Line: Jesus, Lover of my soul, Lyrics: 1 Jesus, Lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high; Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, Till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide, Oh, receive my soul at last. 2 Other refuge have I none, Hangs my helpless soul on Thee; Leave, oh, leave me not alone, Still support and comfort me: All my trust on Thee is stayed, All my help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenceless head With the shadow of Thy wing. 3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; More than all in Thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind: Just and holy is Thy name, I am all unrighteousness; Vile and full of sin I am, Thou art full of truth and grace. 4 Plenteous grace with Thee is found-- Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; Make me, keep me pure within; Thou of life the Fountain art, Freely let me take of Thee; Spring Thou up within my heart, Rise to all eternity. Author: Edward Mote Meter: 8.8.8.8 with refrain Appears in 1,085 hymnals Topics: Jesus Christ Strength and Refuge Refrain First Line: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand Lyrics: 1 My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. 2 When darkness veils his lovely face I rest on his unchanging grace; in ev'ry high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain) 3 His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way he then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain) 4 When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found, dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. (Refrain) Scripture: Psalm 111:9 Used With Tune: ST. CATHERINE

God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 22 hymnals Topics: Refuge Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and our strength, our ever-present aid, and therefore, though the earth be moved, we will not be afraid though hills into the seas be cast, though foaming waters roar, though all the mighty billows shake the mountains on the shore. 2 A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, the holy place wherein the LORD Most High has his abode. Since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand; for God will hasten to her aid when trouble is at hand. 3 The nations rage, the kingdoms move, but when his voice is heard, earth melts with trembling fear before the thunder of his word. The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. 4 O come and see what wondrous works the hand of God has done; come, see what desolation great he brings beneath the sun. In every corner of the earth he causes wars to cease; the weapons of the strong destroyed, he makes abiding peace. 5 "Be still and know that I am God, the LORD whom all must claim; and every nation of the earth shall magnify my name." The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: NOEL Text Sources: Scottish Psalter, 1650; alt.

Rock of Ages

Author: Augustus M. Toplady Appears in 2,902 hymnals Topics: Christ Refuge; Christ Refuge First Line: Rock of Ages, cleft for me Lyrics: 1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r. 2 Not the labors of my hands Can fulfil Thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save and Thou alone. 3 Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die! 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, When my eyelids close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee. Amen. Scripture: Exodus 33:22 Used With Tune: [Rock of Ages, cleft for me]

For I am your God and will still give you aid; I'll strengthen and help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand. 3 "When through the deep waters I call you to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be with you, your troubles to bless, and sanctify to you your deepest distress. 4 "When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply: the flame shall not hurt you, I only design your dross to consume, and your gold to refine. 5 "The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose I will not -- I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake, I'll never -- no, never -- no, never forsake!" God Is Our Refuge and Strength

Appears in 48 hymnals Topics: God as Refuge Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; 2 Though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 3 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; God shall help her at the break of day. 4 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 5 Come now and look upon the works of the LORD, what awesome things he has done on earth. It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. 6 "Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: [God is our refuge and strength] Text Sources: The Book of Common Prayer

O God, Our Help in Ages Past

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,239 hymnals Topics: Refuge Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home: 2 Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is your arm alone, and our defense is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood or earth received its frame, from everlasting you are God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, soon bears us all away; we fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, still be our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home! Sing praise to God who reigns above

Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 194 hymnals Topics: God the Father Refuge and Helper Lyrics: 1 Sing praise to God who reigns above, The God of all creation, The God of power, the God of love, The God of our salvation. With healing balm my soul He fills, And every pain and sorrow stills: To God all praise and glory! 2 The angel host, O King of kings, Thy praise forever telling, In earth and sky all living things Beneath Thy shadow dwelling, Adore the wisdom which could span, And power which formed, creation's plan: To God all praise and glory! 3 What God's almighty power hath made, His gracious mercy keepeth; By morning glow or evening shade His watchful eye ne'er sleepeth: Within the kingdom of His might, Lo, all is just, and all is right: To God all praise and glory! 4 I cried to God in my distress, His mercy heard me calling; My Saviour saw my helplessness And kept my feet from falling; For this, Lord, praise and thanks to Thee! Praise God most high, praise God with me! To God all praise and glory! 5 The Lord is never far away, Forsakes His people never, He is their refuge and their stay, Their peace and trust forever; And with a mother's watchful love He guides them wheresoe'er they rove: To God all praise and glory! 6 When every earthly hope has flown From sorrow's sons and daughters, Our Father from His heavenly throne Beholds the troubled waters, And at His word the storm is stayed Which made His children's hearts afraid: To God all praise and glory! 7 Thus all my pilgrim way along I'll sing aloud Thy praises, That men may hear the grateful song My voice unwearied raises: Be joyful in the Lord, my heart! Both soul and body, bear your part! To God all praise and glory! Used With Tune: O HOLY GHOST, THOU HEAVENLY GIFT

Dear Refuge of my weary soul

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 362 hymnals Topics: God the Father Refuge and Helper Lyrics: 1 Dear Refuge of my weary soul, On Thee, when sorrows rise, On Thee, when waves of trouble roll, My fainting hope relies. 2 To Thee I tell each rising grief, For Thou alone canst heal; Thy Word can bring a sweet relief For every pain I feel. 3 But oh, when gloomy doubts prevail, I fear to call Thee mine; The springs of comfort seem to fail, And all my hopes decline. 4 Yet, gracious God, where shall I flee? Thou art my only trust, And still my soul would cleave to Thee, Though prostrate in the dust. 5 Thy mercy-seat is open still; Here let my soul retreat, With humble hope attend Thy will, And wait beneath Thy feet. What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Author: Joseph Medlicott Scriven Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,692 hymnals Topics: Jesus Christ Refuge; Jesus Christ Strength and Refuge Lyrics: 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Christ the Saviour is our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do our friends despise, forsake us? Are we tempted to despair? Jesus' strength will shield our weakness, and we'll find new courage there. Used With Tune: FRIENDSHIP

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther; Frederick H. Hedge Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Appears in 674 hymnals Topics: God As Refuge Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right man on our side, the man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he, Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4 That Word above all earthly pow'rs, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever. Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: EIN' FESTE BURG
