Author: Anon. Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 91 hymnals Topics: The Church Year Fourth Sunday in Advent Lyrics: 1 Creator of the starry height, Thy people's everlasting light, Jesus, Redeemer of us all, Hear Thou Thy servants when they call. 2 Thou, sorrowing at the helpless cry Of all creation doomed to die, didst save our lost and guilty race, By healing gifts of heavenly grace. 3 Love drew Thee down, the world to win From common stain of common sin; Proceeding from a virgin shrine The spotless victim all divine. 4 At Thy great name, exalted now, All knees in lowly homage bow; All things in heaven and earth adore, And own thee King for evermore. 5 To Thee, O holy One, we pray, Our Judge in that tremendous day, Ward off, while yet we dwell below, The weapons of our crafty foe. 6 To God the Father, God the Son And God the Spirit, Three in One, Praise, honor, might, and glory be From age to age eternally.

O Sov'reign meek and lowly, Thou Root of Jesse, David's Son, My Lord and Bridegroom, thou hast won My heart to serve Thee solely! Holy art Thou, Fair and glorious, All victorious, Rich in blessing, Rule and might o'er all possessing. 2 Thou Heavenly Brightness! Light Divine! O deep within my heart now shine, And make Thee there an altar! Fill me with joy and strength to be Thy member, ever joined to Thee In love that cannot falter; Toward Thee longing Doth possess me, Turn and bless me, For Thy gladness Eye and heart here pine in sadness. 3 But if Thou look on me in love, There straightway falls from God above A ray of purest pleasure; Thy Word and Spirit, Flesh and Blood, Refresh my soul with heavenly food, Thou art my hidden treasure; Let Thy grace, Lord, Warm and cheer O draw near me; Thou hast taught us Thee to seek since Thou hast sought us! 4 Here will I rest, and hold it fast, The Lord I love is First and Last, The End as the Beginning! Here I can calmly die, for Thou Wilt raise me where Thou dwellest now, Amen! Amen! Come, Lord Jesus, Soon release us, With deep yearning, Lord, we look for Thy returning. Driftig nu, mit bange Hjerte

Author: H. A. Brorson Hymnal: M. B. Landstads Kirkesalmebog og "Nokre Salmar" ved Professor Dr. E. Blix, samt følgende tillæg #568 (1897) Topics: Fourth Sunday in Advent High Mass Lyrics: 1 Dristig nu, mit bange Hjerte, Fat dig et frimodigt Sind! 6 Jesu, tak, at du tilsteder Mig at komme dig saa nær! Languages: Norwegian

Languages: Norwegian

Author: Michael Schirmer; Søren Jonassøn Hymnal: Salmebog for Lutherske Kristne i Amerika #19 (1919) Topics: Fourth Sunday in Advent Lyrics: 1 O Helligaand, kom til os ned, Din Bolig du i os bered Ved Ordets Lys og Stjerne! Du Himmel-Lys, som mørknes ei, Giv, at vi Sandheds Himmelvei Ved dig maa følge gjerne! Dit Skin Hvert Trin Os ledsage, Og forjage Mørkets Tanker, Som i vore Hjerter vanker! Giv Tro, Giv Ro! Lær at haabe, Hjælp at raabe, Giv vi alle Kunde Jesus Herre kalde! 3 Du Visdoms rige Kildervæld, Som fylder hver gudfrygtig Sjæl, Lær os det her i Live, At vi ved Troens Enighed Med sand indbyrdes Kjærlighed Maa godt Eksempel give! Bøi du Vor Hu Til din Lære, Dig til Ære Hjælp at prise Gud, og hver Mand godt bevise! 4 Staa du os paa vor Vandring bi, Før os selv paa den rette Sti, Lad Foden ikke glide! Giv i vort Løb Bestandighed, Lær os dit Kors med Taalighed I Troens Kraft at lide! Trøst selv Vor Sjæl! I al Sorgen Vær du Borgen, Hvor vi trygge Kan i Nødens Tider bygge! 5 O byre Balsam, ædle Saft, Du os al overflødig Kraft Og Hjerte-Styrkning give, Naar vore Fienders Pileskud Bil os i Striden fordre ud, At vi mag stærke blive! Languages: Norwegian

Person Name: Anon. Topics: The Church Year Fourth Sunday in Advent Author of "Creator of the starry height" in The Lutheran Hymnary In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Louis Bourgeois

1510 - 1561 Person Name: L. Bourgeois Topics: The Church Year Fourth Sunday in Advent Composer of "[Creator of the starry height]" in The Lutheran Hymnary Louis Bourgeois (b. Paris, France, c. 1510; d. Paris, 1561). In both his early and later years Bourgeois wrote French songs to entertain the rich, but in the history of church music he is known especially for his contribution to the Genevan Psalter. Apparently moving to Geneva in 1541, the same year John Calvin returned to Geneva from Strasbourg, Bourgeois served as cantor and master of the choristers at both St. Pierre and St. Gervais, which is to say he was music director there under the pastoral leadership of Calvin. Bourgeois used the choristers to teach the new psalm tunes to the congregation. The extent of Bourgeois's involvement in the Genevan Psalter is a matter of scholarly debate. Calvin had published several partial psalters, including one in Strasbourg in 1539 and another in Geneva in 1542, with melodies by unknown composers. In 1551 another French psalter appeared in Geneva, Eighty-three Psalms of David, with texts by Marot and de Beze, and with most of the melodies by Bourgeois, who supplied thirty four original tunes and thirty-six revisions of older tunes. This edition was republished repeatedly, and later Bourgeois's tunes were incorporated into the complete Genevan Psalter (1562). However, his revision of some older tunes was not uniformly appreciated by those who were familiar with the original versions; he was actually imprisoned overnight for some of his musical arrangements but freed after Calvin's intervention. In addition to his contribution to the 1551 Psalter, Bourgeois produced a four-part harmonization of fifty psalms, published in Lyons (1547, enlarged 1554), and wrote a textbook on singing and sight-reading, La Droit Chemin de Musique (1550). He left Geneva in 1552 and lived in Lyons and Paris for the remainder of his life. Bert Polman

Ludvig Mathias Lindeman

1812 - 1887 Person Name: Ludv. M. Lindeman Topics: Fourth Sunday in Advent For Evening Composer of "[Herre Jesu Krist!]" in M. B. Landstads Kirkesalmebog og "Nokre Salmar" ved Professor Dr. E. Blix, samt følgende tillæg Ludvig M. Lindeman (b. 1812; d. 1887) was a Norwegian composer and organist. Born in Trondheim, he studied theology in Oslo where he remained the rest of his life. In 1839 he succeeded his brother as the organist and cantor of Oslo Cathedral, a position he held for 48 years up until his death. Lindeman was appointed Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, and was invited to both help christen the new organ in Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as compose for the coronation of King Oscar II and Queen Sophie of Sweden. In 1883, he and his son started the Organist School in Oslo. Lindeman is perhaps best known for his arrangements of Norwegiam folk tales; over the course of his life he collected over 3000 folk melodies and tunes. Laura de Jong
