Corrections for Sin, and release by Prayer

Appears in 40 hymnals Topics: Weather; Weather First Line: From age to age exalt his name Lyrics: 1 From age to age exalt his name, God and his grace are still the same; He fills the hungry soul with food, And feeds the poor with every good. 2 But if their hearts rebel and rise Against the God that rules the skies; If they reject his heavenly word, And slight the counsels of the Lord: 3 He'll bring their spirits to the ground, And no deliverance shall be found; Laden with grief they waste their breath In darkness and the shades of death. 4 Then to the Lord they raise their cries, He makes the dawning light arise, And scatters all that dismal shade That hung so heavy round their head. 5 He cuts the bars of brass in two, And lets the smiling prisoners through Takes off the load of guilt and grief, And gives the labouring soul relief. 6 Oh may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! How great his works! how kind his ways! Let every tongue pronounce his praise. Scripture: Psalm 107

The Seasons of the Year

Appears in 279 hymnals Topics: Weather; Weather First Line: With songs and honours sounding loud Lyrics: 1 With songs and honours sounding loud, Address the Lord on high; Over the heavens he spreads his cloud, And waters veil the sky. 2 He sends his showers of blessing down To cheer the plains below; He makes the grass the mountains crown, And corn in valleys grow. 3 He gives the grazing ox his meat, He hears the ravens cry; But man who tastes his finest wheat, Should raise his honours high. 4 His steady counsels change the face Of the declining year; He bids the sun cut short his race, And wintry days appear. 5 His hoary frost, his fleecy snow Descend and clothe the ground; The liquid streams forbear to flow, In icy fetters bound. 6 When from the dreadful stores on high He pours the sounding hail, The wretch that dares his God defy Shall find his courage fail. 7 He sends his word and melts the snow, The fields no longer mourn; He calls the warmer gales to blow, And bids the spring return. 8 The changing wind, the flying cloud, Obey his mighty word: With songs and honours sounding loud Praise ye the sovereign Lord. Scripture: Psalm 147:13-18

Public Prayer and Praise

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #110 (1786) Topics: Weather; Weather First Line: The praise of Sion waits for thee Lyrics: 1 The praise of Sion waits for thee, My God; and praise becomes thy house; There shall thy saints thy glory see And there perform their public vows. 2 O thou whose mercy bends the skies To save when humble sinners pray; All lands to thee shall lift their eyes, And every yielding heart obey. 3 Against my will my sins prevail, But grace shall purge away the stain: The blood of Christ will never fail To wash my garments white again. 4 Blest is the man whom thou shalt chuse, And give him kind access to thee; Give him a place within thy house, To taste thy love divinely free. Pause. 5 Let Babel fear when Sion prays, Babel, prepare for long distress, When Sion's God himself arrays In terror and in righteousness. 6 With dreadful glory God fulfils What his afflicted saints request; And with Almighty wrath reveals His love to give his churches rest. 7 Then shall the flocking nations run To Sion's hill and own their Lord; The rising and the setting sun Shall see the Saviour's name ador'd. Chas. H. Gabriel

1856 - 1932 Person Name: C. H. G. Topics: For Inclement Weather Author of "Sunshine and rain" in Magnificat Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Gabriel's gospel songs became widely circulated through the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver urban crusades. Bert Polman
