Psalm 22

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 112 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22:1 First Line: Now let our mournful songs record Lyrics: Now let our mournful songs record The dying sorrows of our Lord, When he complained in tears and blood, As one forsaken of his God. The Jews beheld him thus forlorn, And shake their heads, and laugh in scorn: "He rescued others from the grave; Now let him try himself to save. "This is the man did once pretend God was his Father and his Friend; If God, the blessed, loved him so, Why doth he fail to help him now?" Barbarous people! cruel priests! How they stood round like savage beasts! Like lions gaping to devour, When God had left him in their power. They wound his head, his hands, his feet, Till streams of blood each other meet; By lot his garments they divide, And mock the pangs in which he died. But God, his Father, heard his cry; Raised from the dead, he reigns on high, The nations learn his righteousness, And humble sinners taste his grace. Topics: Christ his sufferings and kingdom; Exaltation of Christ to the kingdom; Gentiles given to Christ; Sufferings and kingdom of Christ; Christ his death and resurrection; Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ

Psalm 22 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 28 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22:20-21 First Line: Now from the roaring lion's rage Lyrics: "Now from the roaring lion's rage, O Lord, protect thy Son, Nor leave thy darling to engage The powers of hell alone." Thus did our suff'ring Savior pray, With mighty cries and tears; God heard him in that dreadful day, And chased away his fears. Great was the vict'ry of his death, His throne exalted high; And all the kindreds of the earth Shall worship or shall die. A num'rous offspring must arise From his expiring groans; They shall be reckoned in his eyes For daughters and for sons. The meek and humble souls shall see His table richly spread; And all that seek the Lord shall be With joys immortal fed. The isles shall know the righteousness Of our incarnate God, And nations yet unborn profess Salvation in his blood. Psalm 22 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22:1-16 First Line: Why has my God my soul forsook Lyrics: Why has my God my soul forsook, Nor will a smile afford? (Thus David once in anguish spoke, And thus our dying Lord.) Though 'tis thy chief delight to dwell Among thy praising saints, Yet thou canst hear a groan as well, And pity our complaints. Our fathers trusted in thy name, And great deliv'rance found; But I'm a worm, despised of men, And trodden to the ground. Shaking the head, they pass me by, And laugh my soul to scorn; "In vain he trusts in God," they cry,. "Neglected and forlorn." But thou art he who formed my flesh By thine almighty word; And since I hung upon the breast, My hope is in the Lord. Why will my Father hide his face, When foes stand threat'ning round, In the dark hour of deep distress, And not a helper found? Behold thy darling left among The cruel and the proud, As bulls of Bashan, fierce and strong, As lions roaring loud. From earth and hell my sorrows meet To multiply the smart; They nail my hands, they pierce my feet, And try to vex my heart. Yet if thy sovereign hand let loose The rage of earth and hell, Why will my heav'nly Father bruise The Son he loves so well? My God, if possible it be, Withhold this bitter cup But I resign my will to thee, And drink the sorrows up. My heart dissolves with pangs unknown, In groans I waste my breath; Thy heavy hand has brought me down Low as the dust of death. Father, I give my spirit up, And trust it in thy hand; My dying flesh shall rest in hope, And rise at thy command. Topics: Christ his sufferings and kingdom; Exaltation of Christ to the kingdom; Gentiles given to Christ; Sufferings and kingdom of Christ; Christ his death and resurrection; Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ

My God, my God, why leav'st thou me

Appears in 13 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22 Lyrics: 1 My God, my God, why leav'st thou me, when I with Anguish faint? O, why so far from me remov'd, and from my loud Complaint? 2 All Day, but all the day unheard, to Thee do I complain; With Cries implore Relief all Night, but cry all Night in vain. 3 Yet Thou are still the righteous Judge of Innocence oppress'd; And therefore Israel's Praises are of Right to Thee address'd. 4, 5 On Thee our Ancestors rely'd, and thy Deliv'rance found; With pious Confidence they pray'd, and with Success were crown'd. 6 But I am treated like a Worm, like none of human Birth: Not only by the Great revil'd, but made the Rabble's Mirth. 7 With Laughter all the gazing Crowd my Agonies survey; They shoot the Lip, they shake the Head, and thus, deriding say: 8 "In God he trusted, boasting oft, "that he was Heav'n's Delight; "Let God come down to save him now, "and own his Favourite." Part II 9 Thou mad'st my teeming Mother's Womb a living Offspring bear; When but a Suckling at the Breast, I was thy early Care. 10 Thou, Guardian-like, didst shield from Wrongs my helpless Infant Days; And since hast been my God, and Guide, through Life's bewilder'd Ways. 11 Withdraw not then so far from me, when Trouble is so nigh; O, send me Help! thy Help, on which I only can rely. 12 High-pamper'd Bulls, a frowning Herd, from Basan's Forest met, With Strength proporion'd to their Rage, have me around beset. 13 They gape on me, and ev'ry Mouth a yawning Grave appears; The desert Lion's savage Roar less dreadful is than theirs. Part III 14 My Blood, like Water's spill'd, my Joints are rack'd, and out of Frame; My Heart dissolves within my Breast, like Wax before the Flame. 15 My Strength, like Potters Earth, is parch'd'; my Tongue cleaves to my Jaws; And to the silent Shades of Death my fainting soul withdraws. 16 Like Blood-hounds, to surround me, they in pack'd Assemblies meet; They pierc'd my inoffensive Hands, they pierc'd my harmless Feet. 17 My Body's rack'd, till all my bones distinctly may be told: Yet such a Spectacle of Woe, as Pastime they behold. 18 As Spoil, my Garments they divide, Lots for my Vesture cast: 19 Therefore approach, o Lord, my Strength; and to my Succour haste. 20 From their sharp Sword protect thou me, of all but Life bereft! Nor let my Darling in the Pow'r of cruel Dogs be left. 21 To save me from the Lion's Jaws, thy perfect Succour send; As once, from goring Unicorns, thou didst my Life defend. 22 Then to my Brethren I'll declare the Triumphs of thy name; In Presence of assembled Saints, thy Glory thus proclaim: 23 "Ye Worshippers of Jacob's God, "all you of Israel's Line, "O praise the Lord, and to your Praise sincere Obedience join. 24 "He ne'er disdain'd on low Distress "to cast a gracious Eye; "Nor turn'd from Poverty His Face, "but hears its humble Cry." Part IV 25 Thus in thy sacred Courts, will I my chearful Thanks express; In Presence of thy Saints perform the Vows of my Distress. 26 The meek Companions of my Grief shall find my Table spread; And all that seek the Lord, shall be with Joys immortal fed. 27 Then shall the glad converted World to God their Homage pay; And scatter'd Nations of the Earth one Sov'reign Lord obey. 28 'Tis His supreme Prerogative o'er subject Kings to reign: 'Tis just that he should rule the World, who does the World sustain. 29 The Rich, who are with plenty fed, His Bounty must confess: The Sons of Want, by Him relieve'd, their gen'rous Patron bless. With humble Worship to his Throne they all for Aid resort; That Pow'r which first their Beings gave, can only them support. 30, 31 Then shall a chosen spotless Race, devoted to His Name, To their admiring Heirs, His Truth and glorious Acts proclaim.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22 Lyrics: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me: why art thou so far from helping me and from the words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the day time but thou hearest not: and in the night season and am not silent. But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel, our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted and thou didst deliver them. They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man: a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. Be not far from me for trouble is near: for there is none to help. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws: and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me, they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them: and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ye that fear the Lord, praise him: all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him and fear him all ye the seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted: neither hath he hid his face from him, but when he cried unto him, he heard. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. A seed shall serve him: it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born: that he hath done this. Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 12 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22 First Line: My God, my God, why hast thou me Lyrics: 1My God, my God, why hast thou me forsaken? why so far Art thou from helping me, and from my words that roaring are? 2All day, my God, to thee I cry, yet am not heard by thee; And in the season of the night I cannot silent be. 3But thou art holy, thou that dost inhabit Isr’el’s praise. 4Our fathers hop’d in thee, they hop’d and thou didst them release. 5When unto thee they sent their cry, to them deliv’rance came: Because they put their trust in thee, they were not put to shame. 6But as for me, a worm I am, and as no man am priz’d: Reproach of men I am, and by the people am despis’d. 7All that me see laugh me to scorn; shoot out the lip do they; They nod and shake their heads at me, and, mocking, thus do say, 8This man did trust in God, that he would free him by his might: Let him deliver him, sith he had in him such delight. 9But thou art he out of the womb that didst me safely take; When I was on my mother’s breasts thou me to hope didst make. 10And I was cast upon thy care, ev’n from the womb till now; And from my mother’s belly, Lord, my God and guide art thou. 11Be not far off, for grief is near, and none to help is found. 12Bulls many compass me, strong bulls of Bashan me surround. 13Their mouths they open’d wide on me, upon me gape did they, Like to a lion ravening and roaring for his prey. 14Like water I’m pour’d out, my bones all out of joint do part: Amidst my bowels, as the wax, so melted is my heart. 15My strength is like a potsherd dry’d; my tongue it cleaveth fast Unto my jaws; and to the dust of death thou brought me hast. 16For dogs have compass’d me about: the wicked, that did meet In their assembly, me inclos’d; they pierc’d my hands and feet. 17I all my bones may tell; they do upon me look and stare. 18Upon my vesture lots they cast, and clothes among them share. 19But be not far, O Lord, my strength; haste to give help to me. 20From sword my soul, from pow’r of dogs my darling set thou free. 21Out of the roaring lion’s mouth do thou me shield and save: For from the horns of unicorns an ear to me thou gave. 22I will shew forth thy name unto those that my brethren are; Amidst the congregation thy praise I will declare. 23Praise ye the Lord, who do him fear; him glorify all ye The seed of Jacob: fear him all that Isr’el’s children be. 24For he despis’d not nor abhorr’d th’ afflicted’s misery; Nor from him hid his face, but heard when he to him did cry. 25Within the congregation great my praise shall be of thee; My vows before them that him fear shall be perform’d by me. 26The meek shall eat, and shall be fill’d; they also praise shall give Unto the Lord that do him seek: your heart shall ever live. 27All ends of th’ earth remember shall, and turn the Lord unto; All kindreds of the nations to him shall homage do: 28Because the kingdom to the Lord doth appertain as his; Likewise among the nations the Governor he is. 29Earth’s fat ones eat, and worship shall: all who to dust descend Shall bow to him; none of them can his soul from death defend. 30A seed shall service do to him; unto the Lord it shall Be for a generation reckon’d in ages all. 31They shall come, and they shall declare his truth and righteousness Unto a people yet unborn, and that he hath done this.

It is God who holds the nations in the hollow of his hand

Author: Frederick Pratt Green (1903-2000) Meter: 15.15.15.6 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22:28 Lyrics: 1 It is God who hold the nations in the hollow of his hand; it is God whose light is shining in the darkness of the land; it is God who builds the city on the Rock and not on sand: may the living God be praised! 2 It is God whose purpose summons us to use the present hour; who recalls us to our senses when a nation's life turns sour; in the discipline of freedom we shall know his saving power: may the living God be praised! 3 When a thankful nation, looking back, has cause to celebrate those who win our admiration by their service to the state; when self-giving is a measure of the greatness of the great: may the living God be praised! 4 God reminds us every sunrise that the world is ours on lease -- for the sake of life tomorrow may our love for it increase; may all peoples live together, share its riches, be at peace: may the living God be praised! Deus, Deus meus

Author: T. S. Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22 First Line: O God my God, wherefore dost thou Lyrics: 1 O God my God, wherefore dost thou forsake me utterly? And helpest not when I do make my great complaint and cry? 2 To thee, my God even all day long I do both cry and call: I cease not all the night, and yet thou hearest not at ail. 3 Even thou that in thy Sanctuary, and holy place dost dwell: Thou art the comfort and the joy, and glory of Israel. 4 And him in whom our fathers old had all their hope for ever: And when they put their trust in thee, Thou didst them aye deliver. 5 They were delivered ever when they called on thy Name; And for the faith they had in thee, they were not put to shame. 6 But I am now become a worm, more like than any man: An out-cast whom the people scorn with all the spite they can. 7 All men despise as they behold me walking on the way: They grin, they mow, and nod their heads, and on this wise they say, 8 This man did glory in the Lord, his favour and his love: Let him redeeme and help him now, his power if he will prove. 9 But Lord out of my mothers wombe, I came by thy behest: Thou didst preserve me still in hope, while I did suck the brest. 10 I was committed from my birth, with thee to have abode: Since I was in my mothers wombe, thou hast been ere my God. The second Part: 11 Then, Lord, depart not now from me, in this my present grief: Since I have none to be my help, my succour and reliefe. 12 So many buls do compasse me, that be full strong of head: Yea, buls so fat, as though they had in Basan field been fed. 13 They gape upon me greedily, as though they would me slay: Much like a Lion roaring out, and ramping for his prey. 14 But I drop downe like water shed, my joynts in sunder break: My heart doth in my body melt, like waxe against the heat. 15 And like a potsherd dri'th my strength, my tongue it cleaveth fast Unto my jaws, and I am brought to dust of death at last. 16 And many dogs do compasse me, and wicked counsell eke Conspire against me cursedly, they pierce my hands and feet. 17 I was tormented so that I might all my bones have told: Yet still upon me hey do look, and still they me behold. 18 My garments they divided eke in parts among them all: And for my coat they did cast lots to whom it should befall. 19 Therefore, I pray thee, be not farre from me at my great need,: But rather sith thou art my strength, to help me Lord make speed. 20 And from the sword Lord save my soul by thy might and thy power: And keep my soule, thy darling deare, from dogs that would devoure. 21 And from the Lion's mouth that would me all in sunder shiver: And from the hornes of Unicornes Lord safely me deliver. 22 Then shall I to my brethren all thy majesty record, And in thy Church shall praise the Name of thee the living Lord. The Third Part: 23 All ye that feare him praise the Lord, thou Jacob honour him: And all ye seed of Israel, with reverence worship him. 24 For he despiseth not the poore, he turneth not away His countenance when they do call, but granteth to their crie. 25 Among the folk that feare the Lord, I will therefore proclaime Thy praise, and keep my promise made for setting forth thy Name. 26 The poore shall eat and be suffic'd, and those that do indeaver To seek the Lord, shall praise his Name; their hearts shall life for ever. 27 All coasts of th'earth shall praise the Lord and turne to him for grace: grace; The heathen folk shall worship him before his blessed face. 28 The kingdome of the heathen folk the Lord shall have therefore: And he shall be their governour, and King for evermore. 29 The rich men of his goodly gifts shall feed and taste also: And in his presence worship him, and bow their knees full low. 30 And all that shall go down to dust, of life by him shall tast: My seed shall serve and praise the Lord, while any world shall last. 31 My seed shall plainely shew to them that shall be borne hereafter His justice and his righteousnesse, and all his works of wonder.

To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar. A Psalm of David

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22 First Line: My God, my God, wherefore hast thou Lyrics: 1 My God, my God, wherefore hast thou Forsaken me? and why Art thou so far from my help And from words of my cry? 2 My God, I in the day time cry, but me thou dost not hear; Also by night and unto me No quiet rest is there. 3 Nevertheless thou holy art, Who constantly dost dwell, Amongst the thankful praises of Thy people Israel. 4 Our fathers heretofore in thee Have put their confidence, They trusted have, and thou to them Didst give deliverance. 5 They unto thee did cry aloud, And were preserved found, In thee they put their confidence, And nought did them confound. 6 But I a worm and not a man, Of men a very scorn: And I among the people am Despised as forlorn. 7 All they that do upon me look, A scoff at me do make; They with contempt shoot out the lip, The head in scorn they shake. 8 Upon the lord he roll'd himself, Let him now rid him quite; Let him deliver him, because In him he doth delight. 9 But thou art he that me out of The belly didst forth take: When I was on my brother's breasts, To hope thou didst me make. 10 I from the tender womb have been Committed unto thee; Yea from my mother's belly thou Hast been a God to me. [2] 11 Be not thou far away from me; For tribulation Approacheth very near at hand, And helper there is none. 12 Great many bulls on ev'ry side Have me encompassed; The mighty bulls of Bashan have Me round environed. 13 With their wide open'd mouths on me They gaping so appear, As if that each a ravening And roaring lions were. 14 Like waters I am spilt, my bones Disjointed are likewise; Like unto melted wax my heart Amidst my bowels lies. 15 My strength is like a potsherd dry'd, And my tongue cleaveth fast Unto my jaws; and to the dust Of death brought me thou hast. 16 For dogs have compass'd me about, Th' assembly me beset Of wicked ones, they pierced through My hands and eke my feet. 17 My bones I may then number all; They look'd, they did me view. 18 My cloaths among them they did part; Lots for my coat they threw. 19 But thou Lord be not far; my strength Haste thou to succour me. 20 My soul from sword, my darling from The pow'r of dogs set free. 21 Out of the lion's mouth also; Oh, saved that I were! For thou from horns of unicorns Didst me vouchsafe to hear. 22 Thy name I will declare to them That brethren are to me; Amidst the congregation I Will praises give to thee. [3] 23 Ye that do fear the Lord, him praise, All Jacob's seed do ye Him glorify, and dread him all Ye Isra'ls seed that be. 24 For he th' affliction of the poor Loaths not, nor doth despise; Nor hides his face from him, but hears When unto him he cries. 25 Within the congregation great, My praise is of thee still: Before them that in reverence, Perform my vows I will. 26 The meek shall eat and be suffic'd; Jehovah praise shall they That do him seek; your heart shall live Unto perpetual aye. 27 All th' Ends of th' earth remember shall And turn unto the Lord; And thee all heathen families To worship shall accord 28 Because unto Jehovah doth The kingdom appertain; Likewise among the nations he Is ruler sovereign. 29 Earth's fat ones eat, and worship shall All who to dust descend, (Who cannot keep alive his soul) Before his face shall bend. 30 With service a posterity Him shall attend upon, Which to the Lord shall counted be A generation. 31 Come shall they, and his righteousness By them declar'd shall be Unto a people yet unborn, That done this thing hath he.

My God, my God, wherefore hast thou

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 22 Lyrics: 1. My God, my God, wherefore hast thou Forsaken me? O why So far from helping me, and deaf To all my mournful Cry? 2. O thou my God, I cry all Day, But thou hast no Regard; I am not silent in the Night, And yet I am not heard. 3. But thou art holy, O thou God, Who do'st great Pleasure take To dwell, where thankful Isr'el praise, And sacred Off'rings make. 4. On Thee, our Fathers firm rely'd; And did Deliv'rance gain. 5. To Thee, they cry'd, and still were sav'd; Their Trust was not in vain. 6. But I, a Worm, and not a Man, So vilely am I priz'd; Reproach'd by Men of greatest Name, By vulgar ones despis'd. 7. The gazing Crowd laugh me to scorn, Their Scoffs upon me play: They gape, and mock, and shake their Heads, And thus deriding say: 8. "He vainly trusted in the Lord, "That he would take his Part; "Now let him save him, if he be "The Darling of his Heart. 9. Thou took'st me from my Mother's Womb, Making my Birth thy Care; When on my Mother's Breast I hung. Thou did'st support me there. 10. Upon thine Arms my Cares were cast, When mine first spread abroad; Thou, from my Infant-Days, hast been My Guardian, and my God. Second Part 11. Forsake me not, when Trouble's near; For none to help is found. 12. Many strong Bulls, of Bashan's Breed, About beset me round. 13. With open Mouth they hideous roar, As Lyons for their Prey. 14. My Blood is spilt, my Joints are rackt, My Heart dissolves away. I5. My Strength, like Potter's Earth, is dry'd, My Tongue cleaves to my Jaws; Down to the Dust of Death, my Life, By thy sore Chast'ning, draws. 16. Fierce Dogs have compass'd me about, Base Crowds around me meet; With unrelenting furious Rage, They pierce my Hands, and Feet. 17. My starting Bones, may all be told; They staring me review. 18. My Robes they parted, as a Prey, Lots for my Vesture threw. 19. O Lord, my Strength, forsake me not; But hast to succour me. 20. My Soul from Sword, my Darling from The Pow'r of Dogs set free. 21. From the fierce Lyon's cruel Jaws Deliv'rance to me send; And from the Horns of th' Unicorn, O hear, and me defend. 22. Then, to my Brethren, I'll declare The Glories of thy Name; Amid'st the Congregation great, I will thy Praise proclaim. Third Part 23. Ye Worshipers of God, him praise, From Jacob who proceed; Him glorify, and reverence him, O all ye Isr'el's Seed. 24. For he hath not despis'd, nor turn'd From the afflicted's Grief, Nor hid his Face from him; but heard His Cries, and sent Relief. 25. I'll shout thy Praise, when e'er the great Assembly meets to pray; Before his Saints, that fear his Name, The Vows I've made, I'll pay. 26. The Poor shall eat, and be suffic'd, And Thanks to God shall give : They that uprightly seek him shall In Joys immortal, live. 27. Earth's distant Ends shall recollect, And turn unto the Lord; All Kindreds of the Nations shall, To worship Thee, accord. 28. For universal Monarchy, To God alone, pertains; He sov'rain Ruler, uncontrol'd. O'er all the Nations reigns. 29. The Rich shall eat, and him adore; And who in Dust ly low. Who cannot keep alive his Soul, Before his Face shall bow. 30. Then shall a chosen Seed him serve; Which God for his will own, 31. To Men unborn, his Truth, he'll shew, And Wonders he hath done.
