When Jesus Was Baptized by John

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Faith That Lets Us Sing #88 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Baptism Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 When Jesus was baptized by John, the sky was torn apart. The Spirit, like a dove, came down and fell upon his heart. As he rose from that desert spring, a voice from heaven cried: “You are my Son, beloved one, my chosen one, my pride.” 2 Thus Jesus heard his call from God and, gifted with God’s grace, began to spread the light of love in every darkened place. He healed the sick, the blind, and lame; the broken, contrite heart. He called for justice for the poor and all those set apart. 3 Like Jesus, we have been baptized, accepted as God’s own, and in that holy sacrament our mission was made known. The Risen Christ lives on in us, his body here on earth, and we are instruments of grace to give God’s love new birth. 4 Each time we gather at the font, remember who we are: a people charged to love and serve our neighbors near and far; a people called to be a friend to all who are in need, and show that love is just and fair in every word and deed. I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say

Author: Horatius Bonar Hymnal: Glory to God #182 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Christian Year Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest; lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light; look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I’ll walk till traveling days are done. Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart

Author: George Croly Hymnal: Voices United #378 (1996) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Baptism of Jesus Year A; Baptism of Jesus Year C Lyrics: 1 Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth, through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, strength to me impart, and make me love you as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies, but take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Hast you not bid me love you, God and King; all, all your own, soul, heart and strength and mind? I see your cross: there teach my heart to cling. O let me seek you and O let me find! 4 Teach me to love you as your angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame, the baptism of the heaven-descended dove, my heart an altar and your love the flame. When Jesus came to Jordan

Author: F. Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: Common Praise #93 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon, but as his Father's Son. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss; for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the Dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make, this very day invade us, and every bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most: to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost. Scripture: Mark 1:14-15 Languages: English Tune Title: OFFERTORIUM

At Jesus' Feet Our Infant Sweet

Author: M. Loy, 1828-1915 Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary #245 (1996) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 At Jesus' feet our infant sweet We lay with all sin's stain, That renders him/her for haev'n unmeet Until he's/she's born again. We here embrace God's mighty grace In this baptismal wave, Nor shall the world our trust efface-- For "Baptism now doth save." 2 We cannot see the Holy Three Concealed the font within, Mere water seems the mystery That cleases us from sin; But everlasting gifts now dwell Through God's Word in this flood; Faith speaks, though reason may rebel: "This flood is Jesus' blood!" O Sing a Song of Bethlehem

Author: Louis FitzGerald Benson Hymnal: Glory to God #159 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Christian Year Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 O sing a song of Bethlehem, of shepherds watching there, and of the news that came to them from angels in the air. The light that shone on Bethlehem fills all the world today. Of Jesus' birth and peace on earth the angels sing alway. 2 O sing a song of Nazareth, of sunny days of joy; O sing of fragrant flowers' breath, and of the sinless boy. For now the flowers of Nazareth in every heart may grow. Now spreads the fame of his dear name on all the winds that blow. 3 O sing a song of Galilee, of lake and woods and hill, of him who walked upon the sea and bade its waves be still. For though, like waves on Galilee, dark seas of trouble roll, when faith has heard the Master's word, falls peace upon the soul. 4 O sing a song of Calvary, its glory and dismay, of him who hung upon the tree, and took our sins away. For he who died on Calvary is risen from the grave, and Christ, our Lord, by heaven adored, is mighty now to save. Scripture: Matthew 8:26 Languages: English Tune Title: KINGSFOLD

Jesus! the name high over all

Author: C. Wesley (1707-1788 ) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #213 (1987) Topics: Epiphany 1, Revelation The Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 Jesus! the name high over all in hell or earth or sky; angels again before it fall and devils fear and fly, and devils fear and fly. 2 Jesus! the name to sinners dear, the name to sinners given; it scatters all their guilty fear, it turns their hell to heaven, it turns their hell to heaven. 3 Jesus the prisoner's fetters breaks and bruises Satan's head; power into strengthless souls he speaks and life into the dead, and life into the dead. 4 O that the world might taste and see the riches of his grace! The arms of love that welcome me would all mankind embrace, would all mankind embrace. 5 His righteousness alone I show, his saving grace proclaim; this is my work on earth below, to cry 'Behold the Lamb!' to cry 'Behold the Lamb!' 6 Happy if with my final breath I may but gasp his name, preach him to all, and cry in death, 'Christ Jesus is the Lamb!'
