The intercession of Christ

Author: Steele Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CLII (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Intercession of Christ; Intercession of Christ First Line: He lives, the great redeemer lives Lyrics: 1 He lives, the great redeemer lives, (What joy the blest assurance gives!) And now before his father God, Pleads the full merits of his blood. 2 Repeated crimes awake our fears, And justice arm'd with frowns appears; But in the savior's lovely face Sweet mercy smiles, and all is peace. 3 Hence then, ye black despairing thoughts, Above our fears, above our faults His powerful intercessions rise And guilt recedes, and terror dies. 4 In every dark distressful hour, When sin and satan join their power; Let this dear hope repel the dart, That Jesus bears us on his heart. 5 Great advocate, almighty friend— On him our humble hopes depend; Our cause can never, never fail, For Jesus pleads, and must prevail. Christ's admonition to Peter under approaching trials, and intercession for him

Author: Dr. Doddridge Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CLV (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Intercession of Christ; Intercession of Christ For Peter; Christ's intercession of the tempted First Line: How keen the tempter's malice is! Lyrics: 1 How keen the tempter's malice is! How artful, and how great! Tho' not one grain shall be destroyed, Yet will he sift the wheat. 2 But God can all his power control, And gather in his chain; And, where he seems to triumph most, The captive soul regain. 3 There is a shepherd kind and strong, Still watchful for his sheep; Nor shall the infernal lion rend, Whom he vouchsafes to keep. 4 Blest Jesus, intercede for us, That we may fall not more, O raise us when we prostrate lie, And comfort lost restore, 5 The secret energy impart, That faith may never fail; But, 'midst whole showers of fiery darts, That temper'd shield prevail. 6 Secur'd ourselves by grace divine, We'll guard our brethren too; And, taught their frailty by our own, Our care of them renew. Christ's Intercession typified by Aaron's Breastplate

Author: Dr. Doddridge Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CLIV (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Intercession of Christ; Intercession of Christ Typified by Aaron's breast plate First Line: Now let our cheerful eyes survey Lyrics: 1 Now let our cheerful eyes survey Our great high priest above, And celebrate his constant care, And sympathetic love. 2 Tho' rais'd to a superior throne, Where angels bow around, And high o'er all the shining train With matchless honors crown'd; 3 The names of all his saints he bears, Deep graven on his heart; Nor shall the meanest christian say That he has lost his part. 4 Those characters shall fair abide, Our everlasting trust, When gems, and monuments, and crowns Have moulder'd down to dust. 5 So, gracious savior, on my breast May thy dear name be worn, A sacred ornament and guard, To endless ages borne! Jesus, my great High Priest

Hymnal: Book of Worship (Rev. ed.) #144 (1870) Topics: Christ Intercession of; Intercession of Christ Lyrics: 1 Jesus, my great High Priest, Offered His blood and died; My guilty conscience seeks No sacrifice beside. His powerful blood did once atone, And now it pleads before the throne. 2 To this dear Surety's hand Will I commit my cause; He answers and fulfils His Father's broken laws. Behold my soul at freedom set; My Surety paid the dreadful debt. 3 My Advocate appears For my defence on high; The Father bows His ears, And lays His thunder by. Not all that hell or sin can say, Shall turn His heart, His love away. 4 Should all the hosts of death, And powers of hell unknown, Put their most dreadful forms Of rage and mischief on, I shall be safe, for Christ displays Superior power and guardian grace. For Your Gift of God the Spirit

Author: Margaret Clarkson Hymnal: Psalter Hymnal (Gray) #416 (1987) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Intercession of Christ; Intercession of Christ Lyrics: 1 For your gift of God the Spirit, power to make our lives anew, pledge of life and hope of glory, Savior, we would worship you. Crowning gift of resurrection sent from your ascended throne, fullness of the very Godhead, come to make your life our own. 2 He who in creation's dawning brooded on the lifeless deep, still across our nature's darkness moves to wake our souls from sleep, moves to stir, to draw, to quicken, thrusts us through with sense of sin; brings to birth and seals and fills us saving Advocate within. 3 He, himself the living Author, wakes to life the sacred Word, reads with us its holy pages and reveals our risen Lord. He it is who works within us, teaching rebel hearts to pray, he whose holy intercessions rise for us both night and day. 4 He, the mighty God, indwells us; his to strengthen, help, empower; his to overcome the tempter ours to call in danger's hour. In his strength we dare to battle all the raging hosts of sin, and by him alone we conquer foes without and foes within. 5 Father, grant your Holy Spirit in our hearts may rule today, grieved not, quenched not, but unhindered, work in us his sovereign way. Fill us with your holy fullness, God the Father, Spirit, Son; in us, through us, then, forever, shall your perfect will be done. Scripture: Romans 8:26 Languages: English Tune Title: BLAENWERN

Depth of mercy! Can there be

Author: C. Wesley, 1707-1788 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #331 (1917) Topics: Christ Intercession of; Intercession of Christ Lyrics: 1 Depth of mercy! Can there be Mercy still reserved for me? Can my God His wrath forbear? Me, the chief of sinners, spare? I have long withstood His grace, Long provoked Him to His face, Would not hearken to His calls, Grieved Him by a thousand falls. 2 Whence to me this waste of love? Ask my Advocate above; See the cause in Jesus' face. Now before the throne of grace. There for me the Saviour stands, Shows His wounds, and spread His hands; God is love! I know, I feel; Jesus weeps, and loves me still! 3 Jesus, answer from above; Is not all Thy nature love? Wilt thou not the wrong forget, Suffering me to kiss Thy feet? If I rightly read Thy heart, If Thou all compassion art, Bow Thine ear, in mercy bow, Pardon and accept me now. Languages: English Tune Title: CULFORD

On the Death of a Saint

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #XXVII (1791) Topics: Intercession of Christ First Line: Blessed are they (the Scriptures say) Lyrics: 1 Blessed are they (the Scriptures say) That dying win the Prize, For rest they shall, their good works all Do follow them likewise. 2 Death's but a Sleep, why should we weep For those in Christ who die? Since this we know to Peace they go, And Joys possess on High. 3 Altho' to dust their Bodies must Be turn'd beneath the Clod, Yet they shall rise above the Skies, And ever live with God. 4 Christ will aloud before the Crowd Cmpos'd of Adam's Race, Confess them dear, who own'd him here, And bore for him Disgrace. 5 Robes they shall have that will outbrave The Whiteness of the Snow; Most pure and bright, like shining Light; Such Jesus will bestow. 6 Then why need we dejected be? Our Loss is their great Gain; For they shall stand at Christ's right Hand, And with their Saviour reign. 7 Their happy Days are spent in praise, While here we sign and groan; could we but see how blest they be, 'Twould make us cease to moan. 8 If there was End, 'twould Trouble send, And would eclipse the Joy, But 'tis not so, they'll never go Out of that sweet Employ. 9 When they've been there ten Million Years, And Millions more are done, They've no less Days to sing God's Praise Than when they first begun.
