Psalm 19

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.45 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Success of the Gospel First Line: THE heav'ns declare thy glory, Lord Lyrics: THE heav'ns declare thy glory, Lord, In every star thy wisdom shines But when our eyes behold thy word, We read thy name in fairer lines. The rolling sun, the changing light, And nights and days, thy power confess But the blest volume thou hast writ Reveals thy justice and thy grace. Sun, moon, and stars convey thy praise Round the whole earth, and never stand: So when thy truth began its race, It touched and glanced on every land. Nor shall thy spreading gospel rest Till through the world thy truth has run, Till Christ has all the nations blest That see the light or feel the sun. Great Sun of Righteousness, arise, Bless the dark world with heav'nly light; Thy gospel makes the simple wise, Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right. Thy noblest wonders here we view In souls renewed and sins forgiv'n; Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew, And make thy word my guide to heaven. Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English

Psalm 19

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.46 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Topics: Success of the Gospel First Line: Great God, the heav'ns' well-ordered frame Lyrics: Great God, the heav'ns' well-ordered frame Declares the glories of thy name: There thy rich works of wonder shine; A thousand starry beauties there, A thousand radiant marks appear Of boundless power and skill divine. From night to day, from day to night, The dawning and the dying light Lectures of heav'nly wisdom read; With silent eloquence they raise Our thoughts to our Creator's praise, And neither sound nor language need. Yet their divine instructions run Far as the journeys of the sun, And every nation knows their voice: The sun, like some young bridegroom dressed, Breaks from the chambers of the east, Rolls round, and makes the earth rejoice. Where'er he spreads his beams abroad, He smiles and speaks his Maker God All nature joins to show thy praise: Thus God in ev'ry creature shines; Fair is the book of nature's lines, But fairer is thy book of grace. I love the volumes of thy word; What light and joy those leaves afford To souls benighted and distressed! Thy precepts guide my doubtful way, Thy fear forbids my feet to stray, Thy promise leads my heart to rest. From the discoveries of thy law The perfect rules of life I draw; These are my study and delight: Not honey so invites the taste, Nor gold that hath the furnace past Appears so pleasing to the sight. Thy threat'nings wake my slumb'ring eyes, And warn me where my danger lies; But 'tis thy blessed gospel, Lord, That makes my guilty conscience clean, Converts my soul, subdues my sin, And gives a free, but large reward. Who knows the errors of his thoughts? My God, forgive my secret faults, And from presumptuous sins restrain: Accept my poor attempts of praise, That I have read thy book of grace, And book of nature, not in vain. Psalm 19 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.44 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Success of the Gospel First Line: Behold, the morning sun Lyrics: Behold, the morning sun Begins his glorious way; His beams through all the nations run, And life and light convey. But where the gospel comes It spreads diviner light; It calls dead sinners from their tombs, And gives the blind their sight. How perfect is thy word! And all thy judgments just! For ever sure thy promise, Lord, And men securely trust. My gracious God, how plain Are thy directions giv'n! O may I never read in vain, But find the path to heav'n! I hear thy word with love, And I would fain obey: Send thy good Spirit from above To guide me, lest I stray. O who can ever find The errors of his ways? Yet with a bold, presumptuous mind I would not dare transgress. Warn me of every sin, Forgive my secret faults, And cleanse this guilty soul of mine, Whose crimes exceed my thoughts. While with my heart and tongue I spread thy praise abroad, Accept the worship and the song, My Savior and my God. Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English

Psalm 19 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.43 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Success of the Gospel First Line: Behold, the lofty sky Lyrics: Behold, the lofty sky Declares its Maker God, And all his starry works on high Proclaim his power abroad. The darkness and the light Still keep their course the same; While night to day, and day to night, Divinely teach his name. In every diff'rent land Their general voice is known; They show the wonders of his hand, And orders of his throne. Ye British lands, rejoice, Here he reveals his word; We are not left to nature's voice, To bid us know the Lord. His statutes and commands Are set before our eyes; He puts his gospel in our hands, Where our salvation lies. His laws are just and pure, His truth without deceit, His promises for ever sure, And his rewards are great. [Not honey to the taste Affords so much delight, Nor gold that has the furnace passed So much allures the sight. While of thy works I sing, Thy glory to proclaim, Accept the praise, my God, my King In my Redeemer's name.] Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English

Up to the Lord that reigns on high

Author: Isaac Watts; Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #27 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Success of the Gospel Lyrics: Up to the Lord, that reigns on high, And views the nations from afar, Let everlasting praises fly, And tell how large his bounties are. [He that can shake the worlds he made, Or with his word, or with his rod, His goodness, how amazing great! And what a condescending God!] [God, that must stoop to view the skies, And bow to see what angels do, Down to our earth he casts his eyes, And bends his footsteps downwards too.] He overrules all mortal things, And manages our mean affairs; On humble souls the King of kings Bestows his counsels and his cares. Our sorrows and our tears we pour Into the bosom of our God; He hears us in the mournful hour, And helps us bear the heavy load. In vain might lofty princes try Such condescension to perform; For worms were never raised so high Above their meanest fellow worm. O could our thankful hearts devise A tribute equal to thy grace, To the third heav'n our songs should rise, And teach the golden harps thy praise. Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English

Now for a tune of lofty praise

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #249 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Success of the Gospel Lyrics: Now for a tune of lofty praise To great Jehovah's equal Son! Awake, my voice, in heav'nly lays Tell the loud wonders he hath done. Sing how he left the worlds of light, And the bright robes he wore above; How swift and joyful was his flight, On wings of everlasting love! [Down to this base, this sinful earth, He came to raise our nature high; He came t' atone Almighty wrath; Jesus, the God, was born to die.] [Hell and its lions roared around, His precious blood the monsters spilt; While weighty sorrows pressed him down, Large as the loads of all our guilt.] Deep in the shades of gloomy death Th' almighty Captive pris'ner lay, Th' almighty Captive left the earth, And rose to everlasting day. Lift up your eyes, ye sons of light, Up to his throne of shining grace; See what immortal glories sit Round the sweet beauties of his face! Amongst a thousand harps and songs, Jesus, the God, exalted reigns; His sacred name fills all their tongues, And echoes through the heav'nly plains. Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English

There was an Hour when Christ rejoic'd

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.XI (1766) Topics: Success of the Gospel Lyrics: 1 There was an Hour when Christ rejoic'd, And spoke his Joy in Words of Praise; "Father, I thank Thee, mighty God, "Lord of the Earth, and Heav'ns and Seas. 2 "I thank thy Sov'reign Pow'r and Love, "That crowns my Doctrine with Success; "And makes the Babes in Knowledge learn "The heights, & breadths, & lengths of Grace. 3 "But all this Glory lies conceal'd "From Men of Prudence and of Wit; "The Prince of Darkness blinds their Eyes, "And their own Pride resists the Light. 4 "Father, 'tis thus, because thy Will "Chose and ordain'd it should be so; "'Tis thy Delight t' abase the Proud, "And lay the haughty Scorner low. 5 "There's none can know the Father right, "But those who learn it from the Son, "Nor can the Son be well receiv'd, "But where the Father makes him known." 6 Then let our Souls adore our God, Who deals his Graces as he please; Nor gives to Mortals an Account Or of his Actions, or Decrees. Jesus the Man of constant Grief

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.XII (1766) Topics: Success of the Gospel Lyrics: 1 Jesus, the Man of constant Grief, A Mourner all his Days; His Spirit once rejoic'd aloud, And turn'd his Joy to Praise. 2 Father, I thank thy wond'rous Love, That hath reveal'd thy Son To Men unlearned; and to Babes Has made thy Gospel known. 3 The Myst'ries of redeeming Grace Are hidden from the Wise, While Pride and Carnal Reas'nings join To swell and blind their Eyes. 4 Thus doth the Lord of Heav'n and Earth His great Decrees fulfil, And orders all his Works of Grace By his own Sov'reign Will. Christ and his Cross is all our Theme

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.CXIX (1766) Topics: Success of the Gospel Lyrics: 1 Christ and his Cross is all our Theme; The Myst'ries that we speak Are Scandal in the Jews Esteem, And Folly to the Greek. 2 But Souls enlightened from above, With Joy receive the Word; They see what Wisdom, Pow'r, and Love, Shine in their dying Lord. 3 The vital Savour of his Name Restores their fainting Breath; But Unbelief perverts the same To Guilt, Despair, and Death. 4 Till God diffuse his Graces down, Like Show'rs of heav'nly Rain, In vain Apollos sows the Ground, And Paul may plant in vain. "Aaron and all his sons must die; But everlasting life is thine, To save for ever those that fly For refuge from the wrath divine. "By me Melchizedek was made On earth a king and priest at once; And thou, my heav'nly Priest, shalt plead, And thou, my King, shalt rule my sons. Jesus the Priest ascends his throne, While counsels of eternal peace, Between the Father and the Son, Proceed with honor and success. Through the whole earth his reign shall spread, And crush the powers that dare rebel; Then shall he judge the rising dead, And send the guilty world to hell. Though while he treads his glorious way, He drinks the cup of tears and blood, The suff'rings of that dreadful day Shall but advance him near to God. Scripture: Psalm 110 Languages: English
