38. Home of Rest

1 Faintly flow, thou falling river,
Like a dream that dies away;
Down to ocean gliding ever,
Keep thy calm unruffled way;
Time, with such a silent motion,
Floats along on wings of air
To eternity’s dark ocean,
Bringing all its treasures there.

2 Roses bloom and then they wither,
Cheeks are bright then fades their glow;
Shapes of light are wafted hither
Then like visions, too, they go;
Quick as clouds at evening driven
O’er the many colored west,
Time is bearing us to heaven,
Home of happiness and rest.

3 Life is one pure, shining river
Flowing to the crystal sea;
We are sailing on it ever
To the vast eternity:
Swiftly on to home and heaven,
With the rushing, heaving tide,
Soon we’ll anchor and be given
Mansions where the saved abide.
