William Alfred Bartlett, D.D. was born February 17, 1858 in Chicago. He was the son of Dr. Samuel Colcord Bartlett who was founder and professor of The Chicago Theological Seminary and later president of Dartmouth College. William was a student in the preparatory department of North Western University, Evanston, and later at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. He received a MA from Dartmouth and a DD from Hartford Theological Seminary. He was pastor of three Congregational Churches in Chicago, the Farmington Avenue Congregational Church in Hartford, and the Pine Street Congregational Church in Lewiston, Maine. He was an accomplished preacher and organizer, involved in both the church and the community. He also was a musician and composer.
