Psalm 12

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.24 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Times evil; Evil times; Saints safety in evil times First Line: Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail Lyrics: Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail, Religion loses ground, The sons of violence prevail, And treacheries abound. Their oaths and promises they break, Yet act the flatterer's part; With fair, deceitful lips they speak, And with a double heart. If we reprove some hateful lie, How is their fury stirred "Are not our lips our own?" they cry; "And who shall be our Lord?" Scoffers appear on every side, Where a vile race of men Is raised to seats of power and pride, And bears the sword in vain. Lord, when iniquities abound, And blasphemy grows bold; When faith is hardly to be found, And love is waxing cold; Is not thy chariot hast'ning on? Hast thou not giv'n this sign? May we not trust and live upon A promise so divine? "Yes," saith the Lord, "now will I rise, And make oppressors flee; I shall appear to their surprise, And set my servants free." Thy word, like silver sev'n times tried, Through ages shall endure; The men that in thy truth confide Shall find the promise sure. Scripture: Psalm 12 Languages: English

Descend from heaven, immortal Dove

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #344 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Times evil; Evil times; Saints safety in evil times Lyrics: Descend from heav'n, immortal Dove, Stoop down and take us on thy wings, And mount and bear us far above The reach of these inferior things: Beyond, beyond this lower sky, Up where eternal ages roll; Where solid pleasures never die, And fruits immortal feast the soul. O for a sight, a pleasing sight Of our Almighty Father's throne! There sits our Savior crowned with light, Clothed in a body like our own. Adoring saints around him stand, And thrones and powers before him fall; The God shines gracious through the man, And sheds sweet glories on them all. O what amazing joys they feel While to their golden harps they sing, And sit on every heav'nly hill, And spread the triumphs of their King! When shall the day, dear Lord, appear, That I shall mount to dwell above, And stand and bow amongst them there, And view thy face, and sing, and love? Scripture: Psalm 12 Languages: English

God loves the righteous, and hates the wicked

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #21 (1786) Topics: Evil times; Evil times First Line: My refuge is the God of love Lyrics: 1 My refuge is the God of love; Why do my foes insult and cry, Fly like a timorous trembling dove, To distant woods or mountains fly? 2 If government be once destroy'd, (That firm foundation of our peace) And violence make justice void, Where shall the righteous seek redress? 3 The Lord in heaven has fix'd his throne, His eye surveys the world below; To him all mortal things are known; His eye-lids search our spirits through. 4 If he afflicts his saints so far, To prove their love, and try their grace, What may the bold transgressors fear? His very soul abhors their wicked ways. 5 On impious wretches he shall rain Sulphureous flames of wasting death, Such as he kindled on the plain Of Sodom, with his angry breath. 6 The righteous Lord loves righteous souls, Whose thoughts and actions are sincere, And with a gracious eye beholds The men that his own image bear. Lord, if thou dost not soon appear

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P12a (1766) Topics: Evil times; Saints safety in evil times Lyrics: 1 Lord, if thou dost not soon appear, Virtue and truth will fly away; A faithful Man amongst us here Will scarce be found, if thou delay. 2 The whole Discourse when Neighbors meet, Is fill'd with Trifles loose and vain; Their Lips are Flatt'ry and Deceit, And their proud Language is profane. 3 But Lips that with Deceit abound Shall not maintain their Triumph long; The God of Vengeance will confound The flatt'ring and blaspheming Tongue. 4 "Yet shall our Words be free, they cry; "Our Tongues shall be controul'd by none: "Where is the Lord will ask us why? "Or, say, our Lips are not our own?" 5 The Lord, who sees the Poor opprest, And hears th' Oppressor's haughty Strain, Will rise to give his Children Rest, Nor shall they trust his Word in vain. 6 Thy Word, O Lord, tho' often try'd, Void of Deceit shall still appear; Not Silver seven Times purify'd From Dross and Mixture shines so clear. 7 Thy Grace shall in the darkest Hour Defend the holy Soul from Harm; Tho' when the vilest Men have Power, On ev'ry Side will Sinners swarm.
