Praise ye the Lord, my heart shall join

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #35 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Princes vain Lyrics: Praise ye the Lord, my heart shall join In work so pleasant, so divine; Now, while the flesh is mine abode, And when my soul ascends to God. Praise shall employ my noblest powers, While immortality endures; My days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last. Why should I make a man my trust? Princes must die and turn to dust; Their breath departs, their pomp, and power, And thoughts, all vanish in an hour. Happy the man whose hopes rely On Isr'el's God; he made the sky, And earth, and seas, with all their train, And none shall find his promise vain. His truth for ever stands secure; He saves th' oppressed, he feeds the poor; He sends the lab'ring conscience peace, And grants the pris'ner sweet release. The Lord hath eyes to give the blind; The Lord supports the sinking mind; He helps the stranger in distress, The widow and the fatherless. He loves his saints, he knows them well, But turns the wicked down to hell: Thy God, O Zion! ever reigns; Praise him in everlasting strains. Scripture: Psalm 146 Languages: English

A Psalm for the Lord's Day

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #162a (1786) Topics: Princes vain; Princes vain First Line: Sweet is the work, my God, my King Lyrics: 1 Sweet is the work, my God, my King, To praise thy name, give thanks and sing, To shew thy love by morning light, And talk of all thy truth at night. 2 Sweet is the day of sacred rest, No mortal cares shall seize my breast, Oh may my heart in tune be found, Like David's harp of solemn sound. 3 My heart shall triumph in my Lord, And bless his works, and bless his word; Thy works of grace how bright they shine! How deep thy counsels! how divine! 4 Fools never raise their thoughts so high; Like brutes they live, like brutes they die; Like grass they flourish, 'till thy breath Blast them in everlasting death. 5 But I shall share a glorious part When grace hath well refin'd my heart, And fresh supplies of joy are shed Like holy oil to cheer my head. 6 Sin (my worst enemy before) Shall vex my eyes and ears no more: My inward foes shall all be slain, Nor satan break my peace again. 7 Then shall I see and hear and know All I desir'd, or wish'd below; And every power find sweet employ In that eternal world of joy. The Church is the Garden of God

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #162b (1786) Topics: Princes vain; Princes vain First Line: Lord, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand Lyrics: 1 Lord, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand In gardens planted by thine hand; Let me within thy courts be seen, Like a young cedar, fresh and green. 2 There grow thy saints in faith and love, Blest with thine influence from above; Not Lebanon with all it's trees Yields such a comely sight as these. 3 The plants of grace shall ever live; (Nature decays, but grace must thrive) Time, that doth all things else impair, Still makes them flourish strong and fair. 4 Laden with fruits of age, they shew, The Lord is holy just and true; None that attend his gates shall find A God unfaithful or unkind. Psalm 62

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.131 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Princes vain First Line: My spirit looks to God alone Lyrics: My spirit looks to God alone; My rock and refuge is his throne; In all my fears, in all my straits, My soul on his salvation waits. Trust him, ye saints, in all your ways, Pour out your hearts before his face: When helpers fail, and foes invade, God is our all-sufficient aid. False are the men of high degree, The baser sort are vanity; Laid in the balance, both appear Light as a puff of empty air. Make not increasing gold your trust, Nor set your hearts on glitt'ring dust Why will you grasp the fleeting smoke, And not believe what God has spoke? Once has his awful voice declared, Once and again my ears have heard, "All power is his eternal due; He must be feared and trusted too." For sovereign power reigns not alone, Grace is a partner of the throne: Thy grace and justice, mighty Lord, Shall well divide our last reward. Scripture: Psalm 62:5-12 Languages: English
