He Means Me, Too

Author: C. W. Naylor Hymnal: Songs of Grace and Glory #14 (1918) Topics: Promise First Line: Is there any firm foundation where my soul may rest secure Refrain First Line: Yes, he means me, too Lyrics: 1 Is there any firm foundation where my soul may rest secure, That thro’ time and endless ages shall unshaken be and sure? When I read the gospel story, tho’ so old, so wondrous new, In the precept and the promise, does he mean me, too? Refrain: Yes, he means me, too, He means me, too, So day by day I’ll trust him to bring me through; I know he will not fail me, for his promises are true, In each one that he has given, he means me, too. 2 When to tempt me Satan whispers, “These are not for you at all, But for Abraham and Moses, and for Peter, James and Paul;” Then I press my Bible closer, Jesus’ dying love I view, And I know in ev’ry promise that he means me, too. [Refrain] 3 I am born of heaven’s Monarch and with Christ am heir of God, I am in the same old pathway that the saints before me trod; In me dwells the self-same Sprit, and his witness, sweet and true, In my heart just now assures me that he means me, too. [Refrain] 4 There shall be a sure fulfillment, faith shall not be turned away, For our God is just as faithful as he was some other day; Let us just believe him, brother, and his glory we shall see, We shall know that ev’ry promise is for you and me. [Refrain] Tune Title: [Is there any firm foundation where my soul may rest secure]

Deep in the shadows of the past

Author: Brian A. Wren, 1936- Hymnal: The Book of Praise #510 (1997) Topics: Promise Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads traveled with their God across the desert sands. The dawning hope of humankind by them was sensed and shown: a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods, they met a mystery, invisible, without a name: "I AM WHAT I WILL BE"; and by their tents, around their fires in story, song and law, they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Exodus to Pentecost the promise changed and grew, while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, or with their letters and laments, their prophecy and praise, recovered, kindled, and expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders long ago, who sifted, copied and preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its story yet our promise, strength and call, the model of emerging faith, alive with hope for all. Scripture: Genesis 12:1-5 Languages: English Tune Title: KINGSFOLD

Never Alone!

Author: Anon. Hymnal: Tabernacle Hymns #68 (1960) Topics: Promise First Line: I've seen the lightning flashing Refrain First Line: No, never alone Lyrics: 1 I’ve seen the lightning flashing, And heard the thunder roll, I’ve felt sin’s breakers dashing, Which almost conquered my soul; I’ve heard the voice of my Savior Biding me still to fight on; He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone! Chorus: No, never alone, No, never alone, He promised never to leave me, He'll claim me for His own. No, never alone, No, never alone, He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone. 2 The world’s fierce winds are blowing; Temptation’s sharp and keen; I have a peace in knowing My Savior stands between— He stands to shield me from danger When my friends are all gone; He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone! [Chorus] 3 When in affliction’s valley I tread the road of care, My Savior helps me to carry My cross so heavy to bear; Tho' all around me is darkness, Earthly joys all flown; My Savior whispers His promise, Never to leave me alone! [Chorus] 4 He died on Calv'ry's mountain, For me they pierced His side, For me He opened that fountain, The crimson, cleansing tide; For me He waiteth in glory, Seated upon His throne; He promised never to leave me, Never to leave me alone! [Chorus] Languages: English Tune Title: [I've seen the lightning flashing]

God and His Church

Hymnal: The Psalter #367 (1912) Topics: Children Promises for; Covenant Promises; Prayer Promise to First Line: Gracious Lord, remember David Lyrics: 1 Gracious Lord, remember David, How he made Thy house his care, How he vowed to seek no pleasure Till Thy house he should prepare. Lord, remember his devotion; Restless in his courts he trod Till he found a habitation Fit for Israel's mighty God, Till he found a habitation Fit for Israel's mighty God. 2 Far away God's ark was resting; It is with His people now; We will go into His temple, At His footstool we will bow. With the ark Thy might revealing, Enter, Lord, into Thy rest; Let Thy priests be clothed with justice, Let Thy joyful saints be blest, Let thy priest be clothed with justice, Let Thy joyful saints be blest. 3 Let the king behold Thy favor For Thy servant David's sake, Unto whom a sacred promise, Sure and faithful, Thou didst make. If his children keep Thy covenant And Thy testimony own, Then, as Thou, O Lord, hast promised, They shall sit upon his throne, Then, as Thou, O Lord, hast promised, They shall sit upon his throne. 4 Thou, the Lord, hast chosen Zion, Thou hast ever loved her well; This my resting-place forever, Here, Thou sayst, I choose to dwell. Surely I will bless and help her, Feed her poor, her saints make glad, And her priests shall stand before Me In salvation's garments clad, And her priests shall stand before Me In salvation's garments clad. 5 I will cause the might of David Ever more and more to grow, On the path of My Anointed I will make a lamp to glow; All His enemies shall perish, I will cover them with shame, But His crown shall ever flourish Blessed be His holy Name, But His crown shall ever flourish, Blessed be His holy Name. Scripture: Psalm 132 Languages: English Tune Title: ULSTER
