The Lord Jehovah reigns

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #41 (1835) Meter: 6.6.6.6.4.4.4.4 Topics: Backsliding soul pardoned Lyrics: The Lord Jehovah reigns, His throne is built on high; The garments he assumes Are light and majesty: His glories shine With beams so bright, No mortal eye Can bear the sight. The thunders of his hand Keep the wide world in awe; His wrath and justice stand To guard his holy law: And where his love Resolves to bless, His truth confirms And seals the grace. Through all his ancient works Surprising wisdom shines, Confounds the powers of hell, And breaks their cursed designs: Strong is his arm, And shall fulfil His great decrees, His sovereign will. And can this mighty King Of glory condescend? And will he write his name, "My Father and my Friend?" I love his name, I love his word; Join all my powers And praise the Lord. I lift my Soul to GOD

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P25a (1766) Topics: Backsliding soul in distress and desertion Lyrics: 1 I lift my Soul to GOD, My Trust is in his Name; Let not my Foes that seek my Blood, Still triumph in my Shame. 2 Sin, and the Pow'rs of Hell, Persuade me to despair: Lord, make me know thy Cov'nant well, That I may 'scape the Snare. 3 From the first dawning Light Till the dark Ev'ning rise, For thy Salvation, Lord, I wait, With ever-longing Eyes. 4 Remember all thy Grace, And lead me in thy Truth; Forgive the Sins of riper Days, And Follies of my Youth. 5 The Lord is just and kind, The Meek shall learn his Ways, And every humble Sinner find The Methods of his Grace. 6 For his own Goodness Sake, He saves my Soul from Shame, He pardons (tho' my Guilt be great) Thro' my Redeemer's Name. Psalm 51 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.120 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backsliding soul restored First Line: O Thou that hear'st when sinners cry Lyrics: O Thou that hear'st when sinners cry, Though all my crimes before thee lie, Behold them not with angry look, But blot their mem'ry from thy book. Create my nature pure within, And form my soul averse to sin: Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart, Nor hide thy presence from my heart. I cannot live without thy light Cast out and banished from thy sight: Thine holy joys, my God, restore, And guard me that I fall no more. Though I have grieved thy Spirit, Lord, His help and comfort still afford; And let a wretch come near thy throne, To plead the merits of thy Son. A broken heart, my God, my King, Is all the sacrifice I bring; The God of grace will ne'er despise A broken heart for sacrifice. My soul lies humbled in the dust, And owns thy dreadful sentence just: Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye, And save the soul condemned to die. Then will I teach the world thy ways; Sinners shall learn thy sovereign grace; I'll lead them to my Savior's blood, And they shall praise a pard'ning God. O may thy love inspire my tongue! Salvation shall be all my song; And all my powers shall join to bless The Lord, my strength and righteousness. Scripture: Psalm 51 Languages: English

Mine Eyes and my Desire

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P25c (1766) Topics: Backsliding soul in distress and desertion Lyrics: 1 Mine Eyes and my Desire Are ever to the Lord; I love to plead his Promises, And rest upon his Word. 2 Turn, turn thee to my Soul, Bring thy Salvation near; When will thy Hand release my Feet Out of the deadly Snare? 3 When shall the Sov'reign Grace Of my forgiving God, Restore me from those dang'rous Ways My wand'ring Feet have trod! 4 The Tumult of my Thoughts Doth but enlarge my Woe; My Spirit languishes, my Heart Is desolate and low. 5 With every Morning Light My Sorrow new begins; Look on my Anguish and my Pain, And pardon all my Sins. Pause. 6 Behold the Hosts of Hell, How cruel is their Hate? Against my Life they rise, and join Their Fury with Deceit. 7 O keep my Soul from Death, Nor put my Hope to Shame; For I have plac'd my only Trust In my Redeemer's Name. 8 With humble Faith I wait To see thy Face again; Of Isr'el it shall ne'er be said, He sought the Lord in vain. Psalm 51 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.118 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backsliding soul restored First Line: Show pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive Lyrics: Show pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive, Let a repenting rebel live: Are not thy mercies large and free? May not a sinner trust in thee? My crimes are great, but not surpass The power and glory of thy grace: Great God, thy nature hath no bound, So let thy pard'ning love be found. O wash my soul from every sin, And make my guilty conscience clean; Here on my heart the burden lies, And past offences pain my eyes. My lips with shame my sins confess Against thy law, against thy grace: Lord, should thy judgment grow severe, I am condemned, but thou art clear. Should sudden vengeance seize my breath, I must pronounce thee just in death; And if my soul were sent to hell, Thy righteous law approves it well. Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord, Whose hope, still hov'ring round thy word, Would light on some sweet promise there, Some sure support against despair. Scripture: Psalm 51 Languages: English

Psalm 130

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.298 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Backsliding soul pardoned First Line: Out of the deeps of long distress Lyrics: Out of the deeps of long distress, The borders of despair, I sent my cries to seek thy grace, My groans to move thine ear. Great God, should thy severer eye, And thine impartial hand, Mark and revenge iniquity, No mortal flesh could stand. But there are pardons with my God For crimes of high degree; Thy Son has bought them with his blood, To draw us near to thee. [I wait for thy salvation, Lord, With strong desires I wait; My soul, invited by thy word, Stands watching at thy gate.] [Just as the guards that keep the night Long for the morning skies, Watch the first beams of breaking light, And meet them with their eyes; So waits my soul to see thy grace, And, more intent than they, Meets the first openings of thy face, And finds a brighter day.] [Then in the Lord let Isr'el trust, Let Isr'el seek his face; The Lord is good as well as just, And plenteous is his grace. There's full redemption at his throne For sinners long enslaved; The great Redeemer is his Son, And Isr'el shall be saved.] Scripture: Psalm 130 Languages: English

Psalm 130

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.299 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backsliding soul pardoned First Line: From deep distress and troubled thoughts Lyrics: From deep distress and troubled thoughts To thee, my God, I raised my cries; If thou severely mark our faults, No flesh can stand before thine eyes. But thou hast built thy throne of grace Free to dispense thy pardons there, That sinners may approach thy face, And hope and love, as well as fear. As the benighted pilgrims wait, And long, and wish for breaking day, So waits my soul before thy gate; When will my God his face display? My trust is fixed upon thy word, Nor shall I trust thy word in vain; Let mourning souls address the Lord, And find relief from all their pain. Great is his love, and large his grace, Through the redemption of his Son; He turns our feet from sinful ways, And pardons what our hands have done. Scripture: Psalm 130 Languages: English

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P25b (1766) Topics: Backsliding soul in distress and desertion Lyrics: 1 Where shall the Man be found That fears t' offend his GOD, That loves the Gospel's joyful Sound, And trembles at the Rod? 2 The Lord shall make him know The Secrets of his Heart, The Wonders of his Cov'nant show, And all his Love impart. 3 The Dealings of his Hand Are Truth and Mercy still, With such as to his Cov'nant stand, And love to do his Will. 4 Their Souls shall dwell at Ease Before their Maker's Face, Their Seed shall taste the Promises In their extensive Grace.
