Psalm 6

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.12 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Complaint of sickness; Devotion on a sick bed; Health sickness, and recovery; Recovery from Sickness; Sick-Bed Devotion; Sickness healed; Temptations in sickness First Line: In anger, Lord, rebuke me not Lyrics: In anger, Lord, rebuke me not; Withdraw the dreadful storm; Nor let thy fury grow so hot Against a feeble worm. My soul's bowed down with heavy cares, My flesh with pain oppressed; My couch is witness to my tears, My tears forbid my rest. Sorrow and pain wear out my days, I waste the night with cries, Counting the minutes as they pass, Till the slow morning rise. Shall I be still tormented more? Mine eye consumed with grief? How long, my God, how long before Thine hand afford relief? He hears when dust and ashes speak, He pities all our groans; He saves us for his mercy's sake, And heals our broken bones. The virtue of his sovereign word Restores our fainting breath; For silent graves praise not the Lord, Nor is he known in death. Scripture: Psalm 6 Languages: English

Psalm 6

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.13 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Complaint of sickness; Devotion on a sick bed; Health sickness, and recovery; Recovery from Sickness; Sick-Bed Devotion; Sickness healed; Temptations in sickness First Line: Lord, I can suffer thy rebukes Lyrics: Lord, I can suffer thy rebukes, When thou with kindness dost chastise; But thy fierce wrath I cannot bear: O let it not against me rise. Pity my languishing estate, And ease the sorrows that I feel; The wounds thine heavy hand hath made, O let thy gentler touches heal! See how I pass my weary days In sighs and groans; and when 'tis night My bed is watered with my tears; My grief consumes, and dims my sight. Look, how the powers of nature mourn! How long, Almighty God, how long? When shall thine hour of grace return? When shall I make thy grace my song? I feel my flesh so near the grave, My thoughts are tempted to despair; But graves can never praise the Lord, For all is dust and silence there. Depart, ye tempters, from my soul, And all despairing thoughts, depart; My God, who hears my humble moan, Will ease my flesh, and cheer my heart. Scripture: Psalm 6 Languages: English

"The mysteries of redeeming grace Are hidden from the wise, While pride and carnal reasonings join To swell and blind their eyes." Thus doth the Lord of heav'n and earth His great decrees fulfil, And orders all his works of grace By his own sovereign will. Scripture: Luke 10:21 Languages: English

[This infant is the mighty God, Come to be suckled and adored; Th' eternal Father, Prince of Peace, The Son of David, and his Lord.] The government of earth and seas Upon his shoulders shall be laid; His wide dominions still increase, And honors to his name be paid. Jesus, the holy child, shall sit High on his father David's throne; Shall crush his foes beneath his feet, And reign to ages yet unknown. Scripture: Isaiah 9:7 Languages: English

Sickness Recovery

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #DXLI (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Sickness and Recovery First Line: A while remained the doubtful strife Lyrics: 1 A while remain'd the doubtful strife, 'Till Jesus gave me back my life. My life? — my soul, recall the word, 'Tis life to see thy gracious Lord. 2 Why inconvenient now to die? Vile unbelief, O tell me why? When can it inconvenient be, My loving Lord, to come to thee? 3 He saw me made the sport of hell, He knew the tempter's malice well; And when my soul had all to fear, Then did the glorious Sun appear. 4 O bless him! — bless, ye dying saints, The God of grace, when nature faints! He shew'd my flesh the gaping grave, To shew me, he had power to save. Languages: English

For a time of general sickness

Hymnal: The Hartford Selection of Hymns from the Most Approved Authors #CCCXLIX (1799) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Sickness General First Line: Death with his dread commission seal'd Lyrics: 1 Death with his dread commission seal'd, Now hastens to his arms: In awful state he takes the field, And sounds his dire alarms. 2 Attendant plagues around him stand, And wait his dread command; And pains, and dying groans obey The signal of his hand. 3 With cruel force, he scatters round His shafts of deadly pow'r; While the grave waits its destin'd prey, Impatient to devour. 4 Look up, ye heirs of endless joy, Nor let your fears prevail; Eternal life is our reward, When life on earth shall fail. 5 What though his darts promiscous hurl'd, Deal fatal plagues around; And heaps of putrid carcases O'erload the cumber'd ground; 6 The arrows, that shall wound your flesh, Were giv'n him from above, Dipt in the great Redeemer's blood, And feather'd all with love. 7 These, with a gentle hand he throws, And saints lie gasping too; But heav'nly strength supports their souls, And bears them conqu'rors through.
