A brighter dawn is breaking

Author: Percy Dearmer, 1867-1936 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #102 (1986) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Topics: St. Luke October 18th Lyrics: 1 A brighter dawn is breaking, And earth with praise is waking; For thou, O King most highest, The power of death defiest; 2 And thou hast come victorious, With risen Body glorious, Who now for ever livest, And life abundant givest. 3 O free the world from blindness, And fill the world with kindness, Give sinners resurrection, Bring striving to perfection; 4 In sickness give us healing, In doubt thy clear revealing, That praise to thee be given In earth as in thy heaven. What thanks and praise to Thee we owe

Author: W. D. Maclagan Hymnal: The Church Hymnal #167 (1920) Topics: Holy Days St. Luke Lyrics: 1 What thanks and praise to Thee we owe, O Priest and Sacrifice divine, For Thy dear Saint thro' whom we know So many a gracious word of Thine. 2 Whom Thou didst choose to tell the tale Of all Thy manhood's toils and tears, And for a moment lift the veil That hides Thy boyhood's spotless years. 3 And still the Church through all her days Uplifts the strains that never cease, The blessed Virgin's hymn of praise, The aged Simeon's words of peace. 4 O happy saint! whose sacred page, So rich in words of truth and love, Pours on the Church from age to age This healing unction from above; 5 The witness of the Saviour's life, The great Apostle's chosen friend Through weary years of toil and strife, And still found faithful to the end. 6 So grant us, Lord, like him to live, Beloved by man, approved by Thee, Till Thou at last the summons give, And we, with him, Thy face shall see. At even when the sun was set

Author: Henry Twells, 1823-1900 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #243 (1986) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: St. Luke October 18th Lyrics: 1 At even when the sun was set The sick, O Lord, around thee lay; O, in what divers pains they met! O with what joy they went away! 2 Once more 'tis eventide, and we Oppressed with various ills draw near; What if thy form we cannot see? We know and feel that thou art here. 3 O Saviour Christ, our woes dispel; For some are sick, and some are sad, And some have never loved thee well, And some have lost the love they had; 4 And some have found the world is vain, Yet from the world they break not free; And some have friends who give them pain, Yet have not sought a friend in thee; 5 And none, O Lord, have perfect rest, For none are wholly free from sin; And they who fain would serve thee best Are conscious most of wrong within. 6 O Saviour Christ, thou too art Man; Thou hast been troubled, tempted, tried; Thy kind but searching glance can scan The very wounds that shame would hide; 7 Thy touch has still its ancient power, No word from thee can fruitless fall; Hear in this solemn evening hour, And in thy mercy heal us all.
