Author: Andrew Reed, 1787-1862 Hymnal: The Book of Praise #390 (1997) Topics: Fire / Flame Lyrics: 1 Spirit divine, inspire our prayers, and make this house your home; descend with all your gracious powers; oh come, great Spirit, come. 2 Come as the light, reveal our need, our hidden weakness show, and lead us in those paths of life where all the righteous go. 3 Come as the fire and purge each heart like sacrificial flame; our soul a holy offering be to our Redeemer's name. 4 Come as the dew and sweetly bless this consecrated hour; may barren souls rejoice to know your life-creating power. 5 Come as the dove and spread your wings, the wings of peaceful love, and let your church on earth become one with the church above. 6 Come as the wind, with rushing sound and pentecostal grace, that all of woman born may see the glory of your face. 7 Spirit divine, attend our prayers; make our lost world your home; descend with all your gracious powers; oh come, great Spirit, come. Glorious things of thee are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Hymnal: The Book of Praise #483 (1997) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Fire / Flame Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; One whose word cannot be broken formed thee for a wrong abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou mayst smile at all thy foes. 2 See the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever will their thirst assuage? Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear, for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading – light by night and shade by day – daily on the manna feeding which God gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, since of Zion's city we, through grace, a part may claim, let the world deride or pity, we will glory in thy name. Fading is all worldly pleasure, all its boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion's children know. Scripture: Exodus 13:21-22 Languages: English Tune Title: AUSTRIA

Jesus, Thy boundless love to me

Author: C. Wesley, 1707-1788 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #498 (1917) Topics: Fire Celestial Lyrics: 1 Jesus, Thy boundless love to me No, thought can reach, no tongue declare; O knit my thankful heart to Thee, And reign without a rival there! Thine wholly, Thine alone, I am, Be Thou alone my constant flame. 2 O grant that nothing in my soul May dwell, but Thy pure love alone: O may Thy love possess me whole, My joy, my treasure, and my crown: Strange flames far from my heart remove; My every act, word, thought, be love! 3 O Love, how cheering is Thy ray; All pain before Thy presence flies, Care, anguish, sorrow, melt away, Where'er Thy healing beams arise; O Jesus, nothing may I see, Nothing desire, or seek but Thee! 4 Unwearied may I this pursue, Dauntless to the high prize aspire; Hourly within my soul renew This holy flame, this heavenly fire; And day and night be all my care To guard the sacred treasure there.
