There's a wideness in God's mercy

Author: Frederick William Faber (1814-1863) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #806 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Proper 5 Year C Lyrics: 1 There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea; there's a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgement given. 2 For the love of God is broader than the measure of our mind, and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he would not own. 3 There is plentiful redemption through the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this; there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss. 4 If our love were but more simple, we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord. Scripture: Psalm 103:12-13 Languages: English Tune Title: CORVEDALE

At the name of Jesus

Author: Carolin M. Noel, 1817-1877 Hymnal: Common Praise #380a (2000) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Topics: Proper 5 Year A Lyrics: 1 At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now: 'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. *2 At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array. 3 Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed: *4 Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father's breast; filled it with the glory, of that perfect rest. 5 Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. *6 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: crown him as your Captain in temptation's hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power. 7 Surely, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. Who would true valour see

Author: John Bunyan, 1628-1688 Hymnal: Common Praise #621 (2000) Meter: 6.5.6.5.6.6.6.5 Topics: Proper 5 Year B Lyrics: 1 Who would true valour see, let him come hither; one here will constant be, come wind, come weather; there's no discouragement shall make him once relent his first avowed intent to be a pilgrim. 2 Whoso beset him round with dismal stories, do but themselves confound, his strength the more is. No lion can him fright: he'll with a giant fight, but he will have the right to be a pilgrim. 3 Hobgoblin nor foul fiend can daunt his spirit; he knows he at the end shall life inherit. Then, fancies, fly away; he'll not fear what men say; he'll labour night and day to be a pilgrim. Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:34-50 Languages: English Tune Title: MONK'S GATE

Captains of the saintly band

Author: Jean de Santeul, 1630-1697; H. W. Baker, 1821-1877 Hymnal: Common Praise #212 (2000) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Topics: Proper 5 Year C Lyrics: 1 Captains of the saintly band, lights who lighten every land, princes who with Jesus dwell, judges of his Israel; 2 On the nations sunk in night ye have shed the Gospel light; sin and error flee away, truth reveals the promised day. 3 Not by warrior’s spear and sword, not by art of human word, preaching but the cross of shame, rebel hearts for Christ ye tame. 4 Earth, that long in sin and pain groaned in Satan’s deadly chain, now to serve its God is free in the law of liberty. 5 Distant lands with one acclaim tell the honour of your name, who, wherever man has trod, teach the mysteries of God. 6 Glory to the Three in One while eternal ages run, who from deepest shades of night called us to his glorious light. Disposer supreme, and Judge of the earth

Author: Jean de Santeul, 1630-1697; Isaac Williams, 1802-1865 Hymnal: Common Praise #214 (2000) Meter: 10.10.11.11 Topics: Proper 5 Year C Lyrics: 1 Disposer supreme, and Judge of the earth, who choosest for thine the meek and the poor; to frail earthen vessels, and things of no worth, entrusting thy riches which ay shall endure; 2 Those vessels soon fail, though full of thy light, and at thy decree are broken and gone; thence brightly appeareth thy truth in its might, as through the clouds riven the lightnings have shone. 3 Like clouds are they borne to do thy great will, and swift as the winds about the world go: the Word with his wisdom their spirits doth fill; they thunder, they lighten, the waters o'erflow. 4 Their sound goeth forth, 'Christ Jesus the Lord!' then Satan doth fear, his citadels fall; as when the dread trumpets went forth at thy word, and one long blast shattered the Canaanite's wall. 5 O loud be their trump, and stirring their sound, to rouse us, O Lord, from slumber of sin: the lights thou hast kindled in darkness around, O may they awaken our spirits within. 6 All honour and praise, dominion and might, to God, Three in One, eternally be, who round us hath shed his own marvellous light, and called us from darkness his glory to see. Immortal Love for ever full

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892 Hymnal: Common Praise #475 (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Proper 5 Year A Lyrics: 1 Immortal Love for ever full, for ever flowing free, for ever shared, for ever whole, a never-ebbing sea. 2 Our outward lips confess the name all other names above; love only knoweth whence it came and comprehendeth love. 3 We may not climb the heavenly steeps to bring the Lord Christ down; in vain we search the lowest deeps, for him no depths can drown: 4 But warm, sweet, tender, even yet a present help is he; and faith has still its Olivet, and love its Galilee. *5 The healing of his seamless dress is by our beds of pain; we touch him in life's throng and press, and we are whole again. *6 Through him the first fond prayers are said our lips of childhood frame; the last low whispers of our dead are burdened with his name. 7 Alone, O Love ineffable, thy saving name is given; to turn aside from thee is hell, to walk with thee is heaven. Praise to the Holiest in the height

Author: John Henry Newman, 1801-1890 Hymnal: Common Praise #557a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Proper 5 Year B Lyrics: 1 Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways. 2 O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came. 3 O wisest love! that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against the foe, should strive and should prevail; 4 And that a higher gift than grace should flesh and blood refine, God's presence and his very self, and essence all-divine. 5 O generous love! that he, who smote in Man for man the foe, the double agony in Man for man should undergo; 6 And in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die. 7 Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways. Come, Let Us to the God of Love

Author: John Morison Hymnal: Voices United #653 (1996) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Proper 5 Year A Lyrics: 1 Come, let us to the God of love with contrite hearts return: our God is gracious, nor will leave the desolate to mourn. 2 God's voice commands the tempest forth, and stills the stormy wave; and though God's arm be strong to smite, 'tis also strong to save. 3 Long has the night of sorrow reigned; the dawn shall bring us light; God shall appear, and we shall rise with gladness at that sight. 4 As dew upon the tender herb diffusing fragrance round, as showers that usher in the spring and cheer the thirsty ground, 5 so shall God's presence bless our souls and shed a joyful light; that hallowed morn shall chase away the sorrows of the night.
