To GOD be endless Praise addressed

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXVIII (1767) Topics: Description of Confidence of Believers in Dangers Lyrics: 1 To GOD be endless Praise addressed, Because his Mercies ne'er decay; That he hath us with Favour blessed, Let thankful Isr'el ever say: And for the Love he's still extedning, Let Aaron's House their Joy express; His Truth and Goodness never ending. Let all who fear the LORD confess. 2 My Soul to GOD her Pray'r addressed, Who graciously vouchsaf'd to hear; Since he relieves me, when oppressed, Why should I any Mortal fear? My Foes, no doubt, shall be disgraced, Since GOD declares himself my Friend; Our Hopes should all in him be placed, And not on human Pow'r depend. 3 Though many Nations, close combined, Did oftentimes beset me round; Yet I my Cause to him resigned, Who did their boasted Strength confound. They swarm'd like Bees, and me defied, Their Rage was like a short-liv'd Blaze; For, whilst on GOD I still relied, I overcame them all with Ease. 4 When they their utmost Force exerted, In hopes to see my sudden Fall; The LORD, who never me deserted, In Mercy sav'd me from them all. That I've escap'd from Tribulation, To him alone the Praise belongs; He is my Strength, and my Salvation; He is the Theme of all my Songs. 5 The Just, with Joy, are ever praising The LORD, who saves their souls from Harm; For wond'rous Things and Works amazing, Are done by his Almighty Arm. His strong Right Hand he hath extended, And never-fading Honours won; His strong Right Hand hath us defended, And most surprizing Wonders done. 6 Though Death draws nigh, my Soul dismaying, Yet GOD shall still prolong my Days; That I his mighty Works displaying, May thus advance his glorious Praise. When GOD, with heavy Hand correcting, My Soul of all her Joy bereaves; Ev'n then, his Mercy me protecting, From Death my fainting Life retrieves. 7 Then let the Gates be wide extended, The Gates, to which the Just repair, That I, whom GOD hath thus defended, May praise my great Deliv'rer there. With Footsteps to those Gates directed, To which in Crouds the Righteous press, Since thou hast heard, and me protected, Thy holy Name, O LORD, I'll bless. 8 That which the Builders once despised, Is now become the Corner-Stone; This Wonder, LORD, thou hast devised, This wond'rous Work is thine alone! This Day is GOD's, let Songs ascending To Heav'n, be sent from ev'ry Voice: LORD, be thy Arm our Cause defending, And make us still in thee rejoice. 9 Who trusts in GOD, to be supported, Ev'n him let all th' Assembly bless; We, who have to his House resorted, Do freely wish you good Success. GOD is the LORD, in whose Salvation, We all both Light and Comfort find; Fast to the Horns, with Adoration, The Altar's Horns, the Victim bind. 10 Thou art my GOD, and I with Pleasure, Will ever praise thy holy Name; Thou art my GOD, my soul's great Treasure, Therefore I'll celebrate thy Fame! Oh, to the LORD be Praise addressed, Who doth so kind and gracious prove; For us, his People, he hath blessed, And crown'd with never ending Love. To God my loud Complaints I made

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXVII (1767) Topics: Description of Storms and Stress of Weather Lyrics: 1 To God my loud Complaints I made, And he vouchsaf'd his powerful Aid; He to my humble Pray'r. Did lend a gracious Ear. All Night my fest'ring Wound did ragem, No Med'cine could the Pain assuage: My Soul indulg'd her Grief, Nor would accept Relief. 2 I thought on God, but then distress'd, I found my Spirits quite oppress'd; The more i did complain, The more encreas'd my Pain; My Grief is swell'd to such a Height, That thro' each tedious Watch of Night, Mine Eyes are kept awake; I sigh, but cannot speak. 3 I call'd to Mind those ancient Days, When I, exalted, sung thy Praise; Those Years so much renown'd; With signal Favours crown'd; By Night I recollect the Song That to my Trimphs did belong, And once such Joy impart, Then thus consult my Heart. 4 "Hath GOD withdrawn His Favour quite, "Is Mercy lost in endless Night? "Will he his promis'd Love "For evermore remove?" I said My Weakness doth supply These Fears, but in the LORD most high I shall securely stand, Protected by his Hand. 5 His Works of old I will relate, On them my Heart shall meditate; My Tongue shall them recite, The Wonders of his Might. Thy Promise, LORD, is ever sure, Thy Ways are holy, just, and pure, And deep thy Counsels are, Who can with thee compare? 6 Thou art the LORD, that dost display Amazing Wonders every Day, And all the World shall own, That thou art GOD alone; And Jacob's Seed and Joseph's Line, Have known thy Strength and Pow'r divine, Who didst thy Arm extend, And them with Might defend. 7 When thee, O GOD, the Waters saw, The troubled Deep was struck with Awe, The frigten'd Billows shrunk, And in their Channels sunk: The Clouds pour'd down, while rending Skies, Fill'd Earth and Heav'n with dread Surprize, And forth thine Arrows came, Wing'd with avenging Flame 8 Broad Sheets of livid Blaze appear; Thy Thunders roll, Earth shakes with Fear, Thy Paths in Waters lie; Nor can thy Steps descry: Thy People from hard Bondage freed, Thou didst by skillful Moses lead, And Aaron's sacred Hand, Safe thro' a desart Land. To GOD, our never failing Strength

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXXI (1767) Topics: Description of Unthankfulness and Rebellion of the Israelites Lyrics: 1 To GOD, our never failing Strength, With glad Applause, loudly sing; And jointly make a chearful Noise, To Jacob's great and awful King. 2 Compose a lofty Hymn of Praise, And touch your Instruments of Joy, Let Psalteries and pleasant Harps, With warbling Lutes, your Skill employ. 3 Let Trumpets at the great new Moon, Their animating Voices raise, To celebrate the joyful Time, Th'appointed solemn Day of Praise. 4 For this a Statute was of old, Which Jacob's GOD himself decreed, To be with pious Care observ'd For Times to come, by Israel's Seed. 5 This he, for a Memorial fix'd, In Joseph, freed from Egypt's Land; Strange Nations barb'rous Speech we heard, A Speech we could not understand. 6 "Your bureen'd Shoulders I reliev'd, (Thus seem'd our gracious GOD to say;) "And by my Pow'r your servile Hands, "Were freed from lab'ring in the Clay. 7 Your Ancestors, with Wrongs oppress'd, For timely Help did call on me; With Pity I their Suff'rings saw, and from their Troubles set them free. 8 They fought for me, and from the Clouds In awful Thunder I reply'd; At Meribah's contentious Stream, Their Faith and Duty both were try'd. Part II 9 Whilst I my solemn Will declare, Do thou my chosen People hear; If thou, O Israel! to my Words Wilt lend thy list'ning Ear. 10 Then shall no GOD besides myself, Within thy Limits e'er be found, Nor shalt thou worship any GOD Adored by the Nations round. 11 The LORD thy GOD, am I alone, Who brought thee out of Egypt's Land; 'Tis I that all thy just Desires Do still supply with lib'ral Hand. 12 But they, my chosen Race, refus'd To hearken to my gracious Voice; Nor would rebellious Israel's Sons Make me, with Confidence, their Choice. 13 So I provok'd, resign'd them up, To ev'ry wicked Lust a Prey; And in their own perverse Designs Permitted them to go astray. 14 O that my People wisely would, My just and mild Commandments heed; That Israel in my righteous Ways Would still, with pious Care, proceed. 15 Then should my heavy Judgments fall, On all who would their Pow'r oppose; And my avenging Hand be rais'd To cut off all their daring Foes. 16 Their Enemies, and mine, should all, Before my Footstool lowly bend; But as for them, their happy State Should stand secure, nor know an End. 17 All Parts with Plenty should abound, With fairest Wheat the fruitful Field, The barren clifts of craggy Rocks, For them should richest Honey yield. Scripture: Psalm 81 Languages: English Tune Title: [To God, our never failing Strength]

To thee, O GOD, we render Praise

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXV (1767) Topics: Description of Happiness of Man Lyrics: 1 To thee, O GOD, we render Praise From Sion, thy blest Seat; Our promis'd Altars there we'll raise, And all our Vows compleat. O thou, who to my humble Pray'r, Didst bend thy list'ning Ear; To thee shall all Mankind repair, And at thy Throne appear. 2 Our Sins, tho' numberless, in vain To stop thy Mercy try, Whilst thou forgiv'st the guilty Stain, And washest out the Dye. Blest is the Man, who, near thee plac'd, Within thy Dwelling lives! Whilst we at humble Distance taste, The Joy thy Temple gives. 3 By wond'rous Acts, O GOD most just, Have we thy Answer found: In the remotest Nations trust, And those whom Seas surround. GOD by His Strength sets fast the Hills, And does his Pow'r engage, With which the stormy Waves he stills, And quells the Peope's Rage. Part II 4 Thou, LORD, dost barb'rous Lands dismay, When they thy Tokens view; With Joy they see the Night and Day, Each others Track pursue. From out thy unexhausted Store, Thy Rain refresh the Ground; Makes Lands, that barren were before, With Corn and Fruits abound. 5 On rising Ridges down it pours, And ev'ry Valley fills; And in the soft prolific Show'rs, A bless'd Increase distills. Thy Goodness does the circling Year, With smiling Plenty crown; And where thy glorious Paths appear, Thy Clouds drop Fatness down. 6 They drop on barren Forests, chang'd By them to Pastures green; The Hills in beauteous Order rang'd, In Robes of Joy are seen, Large Flocks the chearful Downs adorn, The teeming Vallies bring A plenteous Crop of full-ear'd Corn, And seem to laugh and sing. Scripture: Psalm 65 Languages: English Tune Title: [To thee, O God, we render Praise]

To Sion's Hill I lift my eyes

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXXI (1767) Topics: Description of Confidence of Believers in Dangers Lyrics: 1 To Sion's Hill I lift my Eyes, From thence expecting Aid; From Sion's Hill and Sion's GOD, Who Heav'n and Earth hath made. My Soul, in Safety rest, For know, thy Guardian will not sleep; His Care who Israel guards, Will surely thee in Safety keep. 2 Shelter'd beneath th'Almighty's Wings, Thou shalt securely rest; Where neither Sun nor Moon shall thee By Day or Night molest. From common Accidents His watchful Care shall guard thee still; His Hand shall thee preserve, From Foes that lie in wait to kill. 8 At home, abroad, in Peace, in War, Thy GOD shall thee defend, Conduct thee through Life's Pilgrimage, Safe to thy Journey's End. Scripture: Psalm 121 Languages: English Tune Title: [To Sion's Hill I lift my eyes]

Vengeance belongs to thee, O GOD

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XCIV (1767) Topics: Description of Unjust Judges Lyrics: 1 Vengeance belongs to thee, O GOD, Thy Justice now disclose; Arise, thou Judge of all the Earth, And crush thy haughty Foes: How long, O LORD, shall sinful Men, Their solemn Triumphs make? How long their wicked Actions boast, And insolently speak? 2 Not only they thy Saints oppress, But unprovok'd, they spill The Widow's and the Stranger's Blood, And helpless Orphans kill: "And yet the LORD shall ne'er perceive, (Profanely thus they speak) "Nor any Notice of our Deeds, "The God of Jacob take." 8 At length, ye stupid Fools, your Wants Endeavour to discern; In Folly will you still proceed, And Wisdom never learn? Can he be deaf who form'd the Ear, Or blind who fram'd the Eye? Shall Earth's great Judge not punish those, Who his known Will defy? 4 He fathoms all the Thoughts of Men, To him their Hearts lie bare; His Eyes survey them all, and see How vain their Counsels are. Part II 5 Blest is the Man whom thou, O LORD, In Kindness dost chastise; And by thy sacred Rules to walk, Most lovingly advise: This Man shall Rest and Safety find. In Seasons of Distress; Whilst GOD prepares a Pit for those, That stubbornly transgress. 6 For GOD will never from his Saints His Favour wholly take; His own Possession and his Lot, He will not quite forsake: The World shall then confess thee just, On all that thou hast done; And those that choose thy upright Ways, Shall in those Paths go on. 7 Who will appear in my Behalf, When wicked Men invade? Or who, when Sinners would oppress, My righteous Cause shall plead? Long since had I in Silence slept, But that the LORD was near, To stay me when I slipt, when sad, My troubled Heart to chear. 8 Wilt thou, who art a GOD most just, Their sinful Throne sustain, Who make the Law a fair Pretence Their wicked Ends to gain? Against the Lives of righteous Men, They form their close Design; And Blood of Innocence to spill, In solemn League combine. 9 But my Defence is firmly plac'd In GOD the LORD most high: He is my Rock, to which I may For Refuge always fly: The LORD shall cause their ill Designs, On their own Heads to fall: He in their Sins shall cut them off, Our GOD shall slay them all. Scripture: Psalm 94 Languages: English Tune Title: [Vengeance belongs to thee, O God]

We build with fruitless Toil and Cost

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXXVII (1767) Topics: Description of Necessity of God's Aid and Blessing in our Undertakings Lyrics: 1 We build with fruitless Toil and Cost, Unless the LORD the Pile sustain; Unless the LORD the City keeps, The Watchman waketh but in vain. 2 In vain we rise before the Dawn; In vain we late to Rest repair; Allow no Respite to our Toil, And daily eat the Bread of Care. 3 Supplies of Life, with Ease to them, The LORD to all his Saints bestows; He crowns their Labours with Success, Their Nights with Peace and soft Repose. 4 Children, those Comforts of our Life, Are Presents from the bounteous LORD; He gives a num'rous Race of Heirs, Of Piety the sweet Reward. 5 As Arrows in a Giant's Hand, When marching forth, equipp'd for War, Ev'n so the Sons of sprightly Youth Their Parents hopeful Safeguard are. 5 Happy the Man whose Quivers are Replete with those prevailing Arms! He need not fear to meet his Foe, In Strifes of Law, or War's Alarms. Scripture: Psalm 127 Languages: English Tune Title: [We build with fruitless Toil and Cost]

Whom should I fear, since GOD to me

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXVII (1767) Topics: Description of Confidence of Believers in Dangers Lyrics: 1 Whom should I fear, since GOD to me Is saving Health and glorious Light; He is my Strength against my Foes, What Dangers can my Soul affright? 2 With fierce Intent my Flesh to tear, When cruel Foes beset me round, They stumbled, and their haughty Crests With sudden Ruin struck the Ground. 3 My humble Heart on GOD depends, And dares with mighty Hosts to cope; Since he's my Help, in doubtful War, For certain Conquest I will hope. 4 Henceforth to dwell within his House My Heart's Desire shall ever be; To know his Will I'll there resort, The Beauty of the LORD to see. 5 For there alone my Soul shall find Sweet Rest, in Times of deep Distress, And safe as on a Rock, with Joy, Abide in that secure Recess. 6 Whilst God by his Almighty Pow'r, My Head o'er all my Foes shall raise; My Soul Thank-Offerings shall make, And sing before him Songs of Praise. Part II 7 Continue, LORD, to hear my Voice, Whene'er to thee I humbly cry; In Mercy all my Pray'rs receive, Nor my sincere Request deny. 8 When thou, O LORD, to seek thy Face, Dost us most graciously advise, "Thy glorious Face I'll always seek," My grateful Heart with Joy replies. 9 Then hide not thou thy Face from me, Nor my requests in Wrath reject; Forsake me not, but Aid afford to him thou didst so oft protect. 10 Though Friends, and nearest Relatives, In Troubles, helpless me forsake; Yet thou, whose Love excels them all, In Mercy, Care of me will take. 11 Instruct me in thy Ways, O LORD, In a plain Path do thou me guide; Lest wicked Men, who watch my Steps, Rejoice to see me tread aside. 12 LORD, disappoint my cruel Foes, Lest they obtain their base Desire, Whose lying Lips and bloody Hands, Against me unprovok'd conspire. 13 I did believe my future Life, Should with thy tender Love be crown'd, Or else my fainting Soul had sunk, With Sorrows deep encompass'd round. 14 Wait on the LORD, with Patience hope, And he will timely Aid afford; Still trust in him, yield not to Fear, Wait thou, I say, upon the LORD. With my whole Heart, my GOD and King

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXXXVIII (1767) Topics: Description of Confidence of Believers in Dangers Lyrics: 1 With my whole Heart, my GOD and King, Thy worthy Praise I will proclaim; Before the GODS with Joy I'll sing, And ever bless thy holy Name. 2 I'll worship at thy sacred Seat; And, with thy Love divine inspir'd, The Praises of thy Truth repeat, Thy Truth through all thy Works admir'd. 3 Thou graciously inclin'd thine Ear, When I to thee address'd my cry; And when my Soul was press'd with Fear, Didst inward Strength to me supply. 4 Therefore shall ev'ry earthly Prince Thy Name with Prsise pursue; Whom these admir'd Events convince, That all thy Works are just and true. 5 They all thy wond'rous Ways, O LORD, With chearful Songs of Joy shall bless; And all thy glorious Acts record, And still thy awful Pow'r confess. 6 For GOD, although enthron'd on high, Does thence the Poor respect; The Proud far off, his scornful Eye, Beholds with ever just Neglect. 7 Though I with Trouble am oppress'd, He shall my spiteful Foes disarm; Relieve my Soul, when most distress'd, And keep me safe from ev'ry Harm. 8 The LORD, whose Mercies ever last, Shall fix my happy State; And mindful of his Favours past, Shall his own glorious Work compleat. With one Consent let all the Earth

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #C (1767) Topics: Description of Fear and Service of the Lord Lyrics: 1 With one Consent let all the Earth To GOD their chearful Voices raise; Glad Homage pay with awful Mirth, And sing before him Songs of Praise. 3 Convinc'd that he is GOD alone, From whom both we and all proceed; We, whom he chooses for his own, The Flock that he vouchsafes to feed. 3 O enter then his Temple Gate, Thence to his Courts devoutly press; And still your grateful Hymns repeat, And still his Name with Praises bless. 4 For he's the LORD supremely good, His Mercy is for ever sure; His Truth, which always firmly stood, To endless Ages shall endure. Scripture: Psalm 100 Languages: English Tune Title: [With one Consent, let all the Earth]
