I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #303 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Topics: Redemption and Salvation First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Languages: English Tune Title: LONDONDERRY AIR

I stand amazed in the presence

Author: Charles H. Gabriel Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #329 (2000) Topics: Redemption and Salvation Refrain First Line: O how marvelous! O, how wonderful Lyrics: 1 I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus, the Nazarene, and wonder how he could love me, a sinner, condemned, unclean. Refrain: O, how marvelous!! O, how wonderful, and my song shall ever be. O, how marvelous! O, how wonderful! is my Saviour’s love for me! 2 For me it was in the garden he prayed - 'Not my will, but thine'; he had no tears for his own griefs, but sweat drops of blood for mine. [Refrain] 3 In pity angels beheld him, and came from the world of light, to comfort him in the sorrows he bore for my soul that night. 4 He took my sins and my sorrows, he made them his very own; he bore the burden to Calvary, and suffered, and died alone. [Refrain] 5 When with the ransomed in glory his face I at last shall see, 'twill be my joy through the ages to sing of his love for me. [Refrain] Scripture: 1 Peter 2:24 Languages: English Tune Title: [I stand amazed in the presence]

Light's abode, celestial Salem

Author: Thomas à Kempis, c. 1379-1471; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #398 (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Topics: Redemption and Salvation Lyrics: 1 Light's abode, celestial Salem, vision whence true peace doth spring, brighter than the heart can fancy, mansion of the highest King; O how glorious are the praises which of thee the prophets sing! 2 There for ever and for ever alleluia is outpoured; for unending, for unbroken is the feast-day of the Lord; all is pure and all is holy that within thy walls is stored. 3 There no cloud or passing vapour dims the brightness of the air; endless noon-day, glorious noon-day, from the Sun of suns is there; there no night brings rest from labour, for unknown are toil and care. 4 O how glorious and resplendent, fragile body, shalt thou be, when endued with so much beauty, full of health and strong and free, full of vigour, full of pleasure that shall last eternally. 5 Now with gladness, now with courage, bear the burden on thee laid, that hereafter these thy labours may with endless gifts be paid; and in everlasting glory thou with brightness be arrayed. 6 Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. Scripture: Psalm 87:1-3 Languages: English Tune Title: REGENT SQUARE
