The Goodness of God

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's Imitation of the Psalms of David #273a (1787) Topics: Compassion of God; Compassion of God First Line: Sweet is the memory of thy grace Lyrics: 1 Sweet is the memory of thy grace, My God, my heavenly King; Let age to age thy righteousness In sounds of glory sing. 2 God reigns on high, but ne'er confines His goodness to the skies; Through the whole earth his bounty shines, And every want supplies. 3 With longing eyes thy creatures wait On Thee for daily food, Thy liberal hand provides their meat, And fills their mouths with good. 4 How kind are thy compassions, Lord! How slow thine anger moves! But soon he sends his pardoning word To cheer the souls he loves. 5 Creatures with all their endless race Thy power and praise proclaim; But saints that taste thy richer grace Delight to bless thy name. Psalm 68 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.144 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: God his vengeance and compassion; Vengeance and compassion First Line: Let God arise in all his might Lyrics: Let God arise in all his might, And put the troops of hell to flight, As smoke that sought to cloud the skies Before the rising tempest flies. [He comes arrayed in burning flames Justice and Vengeance are his names: Behold his fainting foes expire, Like melting wax before the fire.] He rides and thunders through the sky; His name, Jehovah, sounds on high Sing to his name, ye sons of grace; Ye saints, rejoice before his face. The widow and the fatherless Fly to his aid in sharp distress; In him the poor and helpless find A Judge that's just, a Father kind. He breaks the captive's heavy chain, And prisoners see the light again; But rebels that dispute his will Shall dwell in chains and darkness still. Kingdoms and thrones to God belong; Crown him, ye nations, in your song: His wondrous names and powers rehearse; His honors shall enrich your verse. He shakes the heav'ns with loud alarms; How terrible is God in arms! In Isr'el are his mercies known, Isr'el is his peculiar throne. Proclaim him King, pronounce him blest; He's your defence, your joy, your rest: When terrors rise and nations faint, God is the strength of every saint. Scripture: Psalm 68:1-6 Languages: English

Psalm 68 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.145 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: God his vengeance and compassion; Vengeance and compassion First Line: Lord, when thou didst ascend on high Lyrics: Lord, when thou didst ascend on high, Ten thousand angels filled the sky; Those heav'nly guards around thee wait, Like chariots that attend thy state. Not Sinai's mountain could appear More glorious when the Lord was there; While he pronounced his dreadful law, And struck the chosen tribes with awe. How bright the triumph none can tell, When the rebellious powers of hell, That thousand souls had captive made, Were all in chains like captives led. Raised by his Father to the throne, He sent the promised Spirit down With gifts and grace for rebel men, That God might dwell on earth again. Scripture: Psalm 68:17-18 Languages: English

Psalm 68 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.146 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: God his vengeance and compassion; Vengeance and compassion First Line: We bless the Lord, the just, the good Lyrics: We bless the Lord, the just, the good, Who fills our hearts with joy and food: Who pours his blessings from the skies, And loads our days with rich supplies. He sends the sun his circuit round, To cheer the fruits, to warm the ground; He bids the clouds with plenteous rain Refresh the thirsty earth again. 'Tis to his care we owe our breath, And all our near escapes from death; Safety and health to God belong; He heals the weak, and guards the strong. He makes the saint and sinner prove The common blessings of his love; But the wide diff'rence that remains, Is endless joy, or endless pains. The Lord, that bruised the serpent's head, On all the serpent's seed shall tread; The stubborn sinner's hope confound, And smite him with a lasting wound. But his right hand his saints shall raise From the deep earth, or deeper seas, And bring them to his courts above; There shall they taste his special love. Scripture: Psalm 68:19 Languages: English

Psalm 103 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.225 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Compassion of God First Line: The Lord, how wondrous are his ways! Lyrics: The Lord, how wondrous are his ways! How firm his truth! how large his grace! He takes his mercy for his throne, And thence he makes his glories known. Not half so high his power hath spread The starry heav'ns above our head, As his rich love exceeds our praise, Exceeds the highest hopes we raise. Not half so far hath nature placed The rising morning from the west, As his forgiving grace removes The daily guilt of those he loves. How slowly doth his wrath arise! On swifter wings salvation flies; And if he lets his anger burn, How soon his frowns to pity turn Amidst his wrath compassion shines; His strokes are lighter than our sins And while his rod corrects his saints, His ear indulges their complaints. So fathers their young sons chastise With gentle hand and melting eyes; The children weep beneath the smart, And move the pity of their heart. The mighty God, the wise and just, Knows that our frame is feeble dust; And will no heavy loads impose Beyond the strength that he bestows. He knows how soon our nature dies, Blasted by every wind that flies; Like grass we spring, and die as soon, Or morning flowers that fade at noon. But his eternal love is sure To all the saints, and shall endure; From age to age his truth shall reign, Nor children's children hope in vain. Scripture: Psalm 103:8-18 Languages: English

With Joy we meditate the Grace

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.CXXV (1766) Topics: Christ''s Compassion to the Afflicted; Christ's Compassion to the Weak and Tempted Lyrics: 1 With Joy we meditate the Grace Of our High-Priest above, His Heart is made of Tenderness, His Bowels melt with Love. 2 Touch'd with a Sympathy within, He knows our feeble Frame; He knows what sore Temptations mean, For he hath felt the same. 3 But spotless, innocent and pure, The great Redeemer stood, While Satan's fiery Darts he bore, And did resist to Blood. 4 He in the Days of feeble Flesh Pour'd out his Cries and Tears, And in his Measure feels afresh What ev'ry Member bears. 5 He'll never quench the smoaking Flax, But raise it to a Flame; The bruised Reed he never breaks, Nor scorns the meanest Name. 6 Then let our humble Faith address His Mercy and his Pow'r; We shall obtain deliv'ring Grace In the distressing Hour. Our Spirits join t' adore the Lamb

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #III.XXII (1766) Topics: Compassion of a dying Christ Lyrics: 1 Our Spirits join t' adore the Lamb; O that our feeble Lips could move In Strains immortal as his Name, And melting as his dying Love. 2 Was ever equal Pity found? The Prince of Heav'n resigns his Breath, And pours his Life out on the Ground, To ransom guilty Worms from Death. [3 Rebels, we broke our Maker's Laws; He from the Threat'ning set us free, Bore the full Vengeance on his Cross, And nail'd the Curses to the Tree.] [4 The Law proclaims no Terror now, And Sinai's Thunder roars no more; From all his Wounds new Blessings flow, A Sea of Joy without a shore. 5 Here we have wash'd our deepest Stains, And heal'd our Wounds with heav'nly Blood; Blest Fountain! springing from the Veins Of Jesus our incarnate God.] 6 In vain our mortal Voices strive To speak Compassion so divine; Had we a Thousand Lives to give, A Thousand Lives should all be thine. A Man Lay Beaten, Left for Dead

Author: Andrew Pratt Hymnal: New Hymns of Hope #5 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Compassion Lyrics: 1 A man lay beaten, left for dead, his shattered, broken frame spoke of the kicks that brought him down, the glows that bruise and maim. The ones who might have offered help could give a reason why they left him lying in the road, they left him there to die. 2 They spoke of fear, they passed him by, they left him in his pain; too busy or too self-absorbed to turn and look again. The ones who could have helped walked on, they passed and soon forgot, but one who knew the cost of love knelt down and shared his lot. 3 When people challenge or deny our rights and break us down, when others leave us desolate and friends just laugh or frown; the foreigners that we reject, the ones we would despise, can bring the grace of God to bear, bring love into our lives. 4 And when we see another's need and feel another's loss, God gives us courage and the strength, the memory of your cross; God give compassion, selfless care, and strip away our pride, then give us each the grace to love the ones we might deride. O Come, My Soul, Bless Thou the Lord

Hymnal: Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) #6 (1990) Meter: 11.10.11.10 with refrain Topics: God Compassion of First Line: O come, my soul, bless thou the Lord thy Maker Lyrics: 1 O come, my soul, bless thou the Lord thy Maker, and all within me bless his holy name; bless thou the Lord, forget not all his mercies, his pard'ning grace and saving love proclaim. Refrain: Bless him forever, wondrous in might, bless him, his servants that in his will delight. 2 Good is the Lord and full of kind compassion, most slow to anger, plenteous in love; rich is his grace to all that humbly seek him, boundless and endless as the heav'ns above. [Refrain] 3 His love is like a father's to his children, tender and kind to all who fear his name; for well he knows our weakness and our frailty, he knows that we are dust, he knows our frame. [Refrain] 4 We fade and die like flow'rs that grow in beauty, like tender grass that soon will disappear; but evermore the love of God is changeless, still shown to those who look to him in fear. [Refrain] 5 High in the heav'ns his throne is fixed forever, his kingdom rules o'er all from pole to pole; bless ye the Lord through all his wide dominion, bless his most holy name, O thou my soul.
