Psalm 51 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.119 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved First Line: Lord, I am vile, conceived in sin Lyrics: Lord, I am vile, conceived in sin; And born unholy and unclean; Sprung from the man whose guilty fall Corrupts the race, and taints us all. Soon as we draw our infant breath, The seeds of sin grow up for death; Thy law demands a perfect heart, But we're defiled in every part. [Great God, create my heart anew, And form my spirit pure and true; O make me wise betimes to spy My danger and my remedy.] Behold, I fall before thy face; My only refuge is thy grace: No outward forms can make me clean The leprosy lies deep within. No bleeding bird, nor bleeding beast, Nor hyssop branch, nor sprinkling priest, Nor running brook, nor flood, nor sea, Can wash the dismal stain away. Jesus, my God, thy blood alone Hath power sufficient to atone; Thy blood can make me white as snow; No Jewish types could cleanse me so. While guilt disturbs and breaks my peace, Nor flesh nor soul hath rest or ease; Lord, let me hear thy pard'ning voice, And make my broken bones rejoice. Scripture: Psalm 51 Languages: English

Psalm 51 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.120 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved First Line: O Thou that hear'st when sinners cry Lyrics: O Thou that hear'st when sinners cry, Though all my crimes before thee lie, Behold them not with angry look, But blot their mem'ry from thy book. Create my nature pure within, And form my soul averse to sin: Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart, Nor hide thy presence from my heart. I cannot live without thy light Cast out and banished from thy sight: Thine holy joys, my God, restore, And guard me that I fall no more. Though I have grieved thy Spirit, Lord, His help and comfort still afford; And let a wretch come near thy throne, To plead the merits of thy Son. A broken heart, my God, my King, Is all the sacrifice I bring; The God of grace will ne'er despise A broken heart for sacrifice. My soul lies humbled in the dust, And owns thy dreadful sentence just: Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye, And save the soul condemned to die. Then will I teach the world thy ways; Sinners shall learn thy sovereign grace; I'll lead them to my Savior's blood, And they shall praise a pard'ning God. O may thy love inspire my tongue! Salvation shall be all my song; And all my powers shall join to bless The Lord, my strength and righteousness. Scripture: Psalm 51 Languages: English

Psalm 51 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.121 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved First Line: Lord, I would spread my sore distress Lyrics: Lord, I would spread my sore distress And guilt before thine eyes; Against thy laws, against thy grace, How high my crimes arise! Shouldst thou condemn my soul to hell, And crush my flesh to dust, Heav'n would approve thy vengeance well, And earth must own it just. I from the stock of Adam came, Unholy and unclean; All my original is shame, And all my nature sin. Born in a world of guilt, I drew Contagion with my breath; And as my days advanced, I grew A juster prey for death. Cleanse me, O Lord, and cheer my soul With thy forgiving love; O make my broken spirit whole, And bid my pains remove. Let not thy Spirit quite depart, Nor drive me from thy face; Create anew my vicious heart, And fill it with thy grace. Then will I make thy mercy known Before the sons of men; Backsliders shall address thy throne, And turn to God again. Scripture: Psalm 51:3-13 Languages: English

Psalm 51 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.122 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved First Line: O God of mercy, hear my call Lyrics: O God of mercy, hear my call, My loads of guilt remove; Break down this separating wall, That bars me from my love. Give me the presence of thy grace, Then my rejoicing tongue Shall speak aloud thy righteousness, And make thy praise my song. No blood of goats nor heifers slain, For sin could e'er atone; The death of Christ shall still remain Sufficient and alone. A soul oppressed with sin's desert, My God will ne'er despise; A humble groan, a broken heart, Is our best sacrifice. Scripture: Psalm 51:14-17 Languages: English

Psalm 130

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.298 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved First Line: Out of the deeps of long distress Lyrics: Out of the deeps of long distress, The borders of despair, I sent my cries to seek thy grace, My groans to move thine ear. Great God, should thy severer eye, And thine impartial hand, Mark and revenge iniquity, No mortal flesh could stand. But there are pardons with my God For crimes of high degree; Thy Son has bought them with his blood, To draw us near to thee. [I wait for thy salvation, Lord, With strong desires I wait; My soul, invited by thy word, Stands watching at thy gate.] [Just as the guards that keep the night Long for the morning skies, Watch the first beams of breaking light, And meet them with their eyes; So waits my soul to see thy grace, And, more intent than they, Meets the first openings of thy face, And finds a brighter day.] [Then in the Lord let Isr'el trust, Let Isr'el seek his face; The Lord is good as well as just, And plenteous is his grace. There's full redemption at his throne For sinners long enslaved; The great Redeemer is his Son, And Isr'el shall be saved.] Scripture: Psalm 130 Languages: English

Psalm 130

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.299 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Conscience its guilt relieved; Guilt of conscience relieved First Line: From deep distress and troubled thoughts Lyrics: From deep distress and troubled thoughts To thee, my God, I raised my cries; If thou severely mark our faults, No flesh can stand before thine eyes. But thou hast built thy throne of grace Free to dispense thy pardons there, That sinners may approach thy face, And hope and love, as well as fear. As the benighted pilgrims wait, And long, and wish for breaking day, So waits my soul before thy gate; When will my God his face display? My trust is fixed upon thy word, Nor shall I trust thy word in vain; Let mourning souls address the Lord, And find relief from all their pain. Great is his love, and large his grace, Through the redemption of his Son; He turns our feet from sinful ways, And pardons what our hands have done. Scripture: Psalm 130 Languages: English

Happy the man to whom his GOD

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P32b (1766) Topics: Guilt of Conscience relieved Lyrics: 1 Happy the Man to whom his GOD No more imputes his Sin, But wash'd in the Redeemer's Blood, Hath made his Garments clean! 2 Happy, beyond Expression, he, Whose Debts are thus discharg'd; And from the guilty Bondage free, He feels his Soul enlarg'd. 3 His Spirit hates Deceit and Lyes, His Words are all sincere; He guards his Heart, he guards his Eyes, To keep his Conscience clear. 4 While I my inward Guilt supprest, No Quiet could I find; Thy Wrath lay burning in my Breast, And rack'd my tortur'd Mind. 5 Then I confess'd my troubled Thoughts, My secret Sins revealed; Thy pard'ning Grace forgave my Faults, Thy Grace my Pardon seal'd. 6 This shall invite thy Saints to pray; When like a raging Flood Temptations rise, our Strength and Stay Is a forgiving GOD. While I keep Silence, and conceal

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P32d (1766) Topics: Guilt of Conscience relieved Lyrics: 1 While I keep Silence, and conceal My heavy Guilt within my Heart, What Torments doth my Conscience feel! What Agonies of inward Smart! 2 I spread my Sins before the Lord, And all my secret Faults confess; Thy Gospel speaks a pard'ning Word, Thine holy Spirit seals the Grace. 3 For this shall every humble Soul Make swift Addresses to thy Seat; When Floods of huge Temptations roll, There shall they find a blest Retreat. 4 How safe beneath thy Wings I lie, When Days grow dark, and Storms appear, And when I walk, thy watchful Eye Shall guide me safe from every Snare. Shew Pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P51a (1766) Topics: Guilt of Conscience relieved Lyrics: 1 Shew pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive, Let a repenting Rebel live; Are not thy Mercies large and free; May not a Sinner trust in Thee? 2 My Crimes are great, but not surpass The Power and Glory of thy Grace: Great GOD, thy Nature hath no Bound, So let thy pard'ning Love be found. 3 O wash my Soul from ev'ry Sin, And make my guilty Conscience clean; Here on my Heart the Burden lies, And past Offences pain mine Eyes. 4 My Lips with Shame my Sins confess Against thy Law, against thy Grace; Lord, should thy Judgment grow severe, I am condemn'd, but thou art clear. 5 Should sudden Vengeance seize my Breath, I must pronounce Thee just in Death: And if my Soul were sent to Hell, Thy righteous Law approves it well. 6 Yet save a trembling Sinner, Lord, Whose Hope still hov'ring round thy Word, Would light on some sweet Promise there, Some sure Support against Despair.
