Doubts and Fears supprest: or GOD our Defence from Sin and Satan

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #7 (1740) Topics: Spiritual Enemies overcome First Line: My God, how many are my Fears! Lyrics: 2 My GOD, how many are my Fears! How fast my Foes increase! Conspiring my eternal Death, They break my present Peace. 2 The lying Tempter would persuade There's no Relief in Heav'n; And all my swelling Sins appear Too big to be forgiv'n. 3 But thou, my Glory and my Strength, Shalt on the Tempter tread, Shalt silence all my threat'ning Guilt, And raise my drooping Head. 4 [I cry'd, and from his holy Hill He bowed a list'ning Ear; I call'd my Father, and my GOD, And he subdu'd my Fear. 5 He shed soft Slumbers on mine Eyes; In spight of all my Foes; I woke, and wonder'd at the Grace That guarded my repose.] 6 What though the Hosts of Death and Hell All arm'd against me stood: Terrors no more shall shake my Soul; My Refuge is my GOD. 7 Arise, O Lord, fulfil thy Grace, While I thy Glory sing; My GOD has broke the Serpent's Teeth, And Death has lost his Sting. 8 Salvation to the Lord belongs, His Arm alone can save. Blessings attend thy People here, And reach beyond the Grave. Scripture: Psalm 3 Languages: English

My Trust is in my heav'nly Friend

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P7 (1766) Topics: Spiritual Enemies overcome Lyrics: 1 My Trust is in my heav'nly Friend, My Hope in Thee, my GOD; Rise, and my helpless Life defend From those that seek my Blood. 2 With Insolence and Fury they My Soul in Pieces tear, As hungry Lions rend the Prey, When no Deliverer's near. 3 If I had e'er provok'd them first, Or once abus'd my Foe, Then let him tread my Life to Dust, And lay mine Honour low. 4 If there be Malice found in me, I know thy piercing Eyes; I should not dare appeal to Thee, Nor ask my GOD to rise. 5 Arise, my GOD, lift up thy Hand, Their Pride and Pow'r controul; Awake to Judgment, and command Deliv'rance for my Soul. Pause. 6 [Let Sinners, and their wicked Rage Be humbled to the Dust; Shall not the GOD of Truth engage To vindicate the Just? 7 He knows the Heart, he tries the Reigns, He will defend th' Upright: His sharpest Arrows he ordains Against the Sons of Spite. 8 For me their Malice digg'd a Pit, But there themselves are cast; My GOD makes all their Mischiefs light On their own Heads at last.] 9 That cruel persecuting Race Must feel his dreadful Sword: Awake my Soul, and praise the Grace And Justice of the Lord. O Lord, our heavenly King

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P8a (1766) Topics: Spiritual Enemies overcome Lyrics: 1 O Lord, our heavenly King, Thy Name is all Divine; Thy Glories round the Earth are spread, And o'er the Heav'ns they shine. 2 When to thy Works on high I raise my wond'ring Eyes, And see the Moon complete in Light Adorn the darksome Skies 3 When I survey the Stars, And all their shining Forms, Lord, what is Man, that worthless Thing, A kin to Dust and Worms? 4 Lord, what is worthless Man, That thou shouldst love him so? Next to thine Angels is he plac'd, And Lord of all below. 5 Thine Honours crown his Head, While Beasts, like Slaves obey, And Birds that cut the Air with Wings, And Fish that cleave the Sea. 6 How rich thy Bounties are! And wond'rous are thy Ways: Of Dust and Worms thy Pow'r can frame A Monument of Praise. 7 [Out of the Mouths of Babes And Sucklings, thou canst draw Surprizing Honours to thy Name, And strike the World with Awe. 8 O Lord, our heav'nly King, Thy Name is all Divine: Thy Glories round the Earth are spread, And o'er the Heav'ns they shine.] Scripture: Psalm 8 Languages: English

Before Jehovah's awful throne, Ye nations bow with sacred joy; Know that the Lord is God alone, He can create, and He destroy. 2. His sovereign power, without our aid, Made us of clay, and formed us men; And when like wandering sheep we strayed, He brought us to His fold again. 3. We'll crowd Thy gates with songs, High as the heavens our voices raise; And earth, with her ten thousand tongues, Shall fill Thy courts with sounding praise. 4. Wide as the world is Thy command; Vast as eternity Thy love; Firm as a rock Thy truth shall stand, When rolling years shall cease to move. Languages: English

Confident Access to God

Hymnal: The Psalter #10 (1912) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Topics: Praise For Spiritual Blessings First Line: In the fullness of thy grace Lyrics: 1 In the fulness of Thy grace To Thy house I will repair; Bowing tow'rd thy holy place, In Thy fear to worship there. Lead me in thy righteousness, Let my foes assail in vain; Lest my feet be turned aside, Make Thy way before me plain. 2 False and faithless are my foes, In their mouth no truth is found; Deadly are the words they speak, All their tho'ts with sin abound. Bring, O God, their plans to nought, Hold them guilty in thy sight, For against Thee and thy law They have set themselves to fight. 3 O let all that trust Thy care Ever glad and joyful be; Let them joy who love Thy Name, Safely guarded, Lord, by Thee. For a blessing from Thy store To the righteous Thou wilt yield; Thou wilt compass him about With Thy favor as a shield. Scripture: Psalm 5 Languages: English Tune Title: MARTYN

This Is My Father's World

Author: Maltbie D. Babcock Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #14 (1985) Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Topics: Warfare, Spiritual Lyrics: 1 This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. 2 This is my Father's world: the birds their carols raise, the morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker's praise. This is my Father's world: he shines in all that's fair; in the ruthling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere. 3. This is my Father's world: oh let me ne'er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. Bless, O my soul, the living God

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #25 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Mercies spiritual and temporal Lyrics: Bless, O my soul, the living God, Call home thy thoughts that rove abroad; Let all the powers within me join In work and worship so divine. Bless, O my soul, the God of grace; His favors claim thy highest praise: Why should the wonders he hath wrought Be lost in silence and forgot? 'Tis he, my soul, that sent his Son To die for crimes which thou hast done; He owns the ransom, and forgives The hourly follies of our lives. The vices of the mind he heals, And cures the pains that nature feels Redeems the soul from hell, and saves Our wasting life from threat'ning graves. Our youth decayed, his power repairs; His mercy crowns our growing years; He satisfies our mouth with good, And fills our hopes with heav'nly food. He sees th' oppressor and th' oppressed, And often gives the suff'rers rest; But will his justice more display In the last great rewarding day. [His power he showed by Moses' hands, And gave to Isr'el his commands; But sent his truth and mercy down To all the nations by his Son. Let the whole earth his power confess, Let the whole earth adore his grace; The Gentile with the Jew shall join In work and worship so divine.] Scripture: Psalm 103:1-7 Languages: English

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther; Frederick H. Hedge Hymnal: The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration #26 (1986) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.7 Topics: Spiritual Warfare Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe - His craft and pow’r are great, And, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, The man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He - Lord Sabaoth His Name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph thru us. The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him - His rage we can endure, For lo, his doom is sure: One little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly pow’rs, No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Thru Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also - The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still: His kingdom is forever. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: EIN' FESTE BURG
