When People Learned of Jesus Christ

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Christian Community Role as teachers following Jesus' model Lyrics: When people learned of Jesus Christ, they came to hear him preach. They longed to find out for themselves what Jesus had to teach. They pondered over parables, and gave his words much thought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He turned the water into wine and multiplied the bread, becalmed the heavy, stormy seas, and even raised the dead. The people wondered at the signs and miracles he wrought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He answered scribes and Pharisees who would with him contend. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and was the sinners' friend. They marveled at his prophecies, the healing that he brought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. We may not work a miracle, fulfill a prophet's role, encourage sinners to repent, or make the wounded whole, but, as disciples, we can tell we've found what all have sought: the never-ending love of God, the love that Jesus taught. Dear God, at home, at work, at school, in all of life, we pray, help us be teachers who reveal your love for us today, that all the world may recognize the spirit that is caught when his disciples try to live the love that Jesus taught. Scripture: Matthew 23:8-10 Used With Tune: DEDICATION

Christian Hearts, in Love United

Author: Nicolaus L. von Zinzendorf; Frederick W. Foster Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: The Church as Community Unity; Christian unity; Church; Fellowship of Believers; Love for Others First Line: Christian hearts, in love united Lyrics: 1 Christian hearts, in love united, seek alone in Jesus rest; has He not your love excited? Then let love inspire each breast. Members on our Head depending, lights reflecting Him, our Sun, Christians, His commands attending, we in Him, our Lord, are one. 2 Come, then, come, O flock of Jesus, covenant with Him anew; unto Him who conquered for us, pledge we love and service true; and should our love's union holy firmly linked no more remain wait ye at His footstool lowly, till He draw it close again. 3 Grant, Lord, that with Thy direction, "Love each other," we comply, aiming with unfeigned affection Thy love to exemplify; let our mutual love be glowing, so that all will plainly see that we, as on one stem growing, living branches are in Thee. 4 O that such may be our union as Thine with the Father is, and not one of our communion e'er forsake the path of bliss; may our light shine forth with brightness, from Thy light reflected, shine; thus the world will bear us witness, that we, Lord, are truly Thine. Scripture: John 15:12-17 Used With Tune: CASSELL
