Praise to God for hearing Prayer

Appears in 74 hymnals Topics: Hearing of Prayer and Salvation; Hearing of Prayer and Salvation First Line: Now shall my solmen vows be paid Lyrics: 1 Now shall my solemn vows be paid To that Almighty power That heard the long requests I made In my distressful hour. 2 My lips and cheerful heart prepare To make his mercies known: Come ye that fear my God, and hear The wonders he has done. 3 When on my head huge sorrows fell, I sought his heavenly aid; He sav'd my sinking soul from hell, And death's eternal shade. 4 If sin lay cover'd in my heart, While prayer employ'd my tongue; The Lord had shewn me no regard, Nor I his praises sung. 5 But God (his name be ever blest) Has set my spirit free; Nor turn'd from him my poor request, Nor turn'd his heart from me. Scripture: Psalm 66:13-20

Appears in 40 hymnals Topics: Hearing of Prayer and Salvation; Hearing of Prayer and Salvation First Line: O God of grace and righteousness Lyrics: 1 O God of grace and righteousness, Hear and attend when I complain: Thou hast enlarg'd me in distress, Bow down a gracious ear again. 2 Ye sons of men in vain ye try To turn my glory into shame; How long will scoffers love to lie, And dare reproach my Saviours name? 3 Know that the Lord divides his saints From all the tribes of men beside; He hears and pities their complaints, For the dear sake of Christ that died. 4 When our obedient hands have done A thousand works of righteousness, We put our trust in God alone, And glory in his pard'ning grace. 5 Let the unthinking many say, "Who will bestow some earthly good? But, Lord, thy light and love we pray; Our souls desire this heavenly food. 6 Then shall my cheerful powers rejoice At grace divine, and love so great; Nor will I change my happy choice For all their wealth and boasted state. What vain desires and passions vain

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 8 hymnals Topics: Hearing of prayer and salvation Lyrics: What vain desires and passions vain Attend this mortal clay! Oft have they pierced my soul with pain, And drawn my heart astray. How have I wandered from my God! And, following sin and shame, In this vile world of flesh and blood Defiled my nobler frame! For ever blessed be thy grace That formed my soul anew, And made it of a heav'n-born race, Thy glory to pursue. My spirit holds perpetual war, And wrestles and complains; But views the happy moment near That shall dissolve its chains. Cheerful in death I close my eyes To part with every lust; And charge my flesh, whene'er it rise, To leave them in the dust. My purer spirit shall not fear To put this body on; Its tempting powers no more are there, Its lusts and passions gone! Scripture: Romans 8:1

A prayer of the afflicted

Appears in 62 hymnals Topics: Hearing of Prayer and Salvation; Hearing of Prayer and Salvation First Line: Hear me, O God, nor hide thy face Lyrics: 1 Hear me, O God, nor hide thy face, But answer, lest I die; Hast thou not built a throne of grace, To hear when sinners cry? 2 My days are wasted like the smoke Dissolving in the air; My strength is dry'd, my heart is broke, And sinking in despair. 3 My spirits flag like withering grass Burnt with excessive heat: In secret groans my minutes pass, And I forget to eat. 4 As on some lonely building’s top, The sparrow tells her moan, Far from the tents of joy and hope I sit and grieve alone. 5 My soul is like a wilderness Where beasts of midnight howl; Where the sad raven finds her place, And where the screaming owl. 6 Dark dismal thoughts and boding fears Dwell in my troubled breast; While sharp reproaches wound my ears, Nor give my spirit rest. 7 My cup is mingled with my woes, And tears are my repast; My daily bread, like ashes grows Unpleasant to my taste. 8 Sense can afford no real joy To souls that feel thy frown; Lord ’twas thy hand advanc'd me high Thy hand hath cast me down. 9 My looks like wither'd leaves appear; And life’s declining light Grows faint as evening-shadows are, That vanish into night. 10 But thou forever art the same, O my eternal God; Ages to come shall know thy name, And spread thy works abroad. 11 Thou wilt arise, and show thy face, Nor will my Lord delay, Beyond th’ appointed hour of grace, That long expected day. 12 He hears his saints, he knows their cry, And by mysterious ways, Redeems the prisoners, doom'd to die, And fills their tongues with praise. Scripture: Psalm 102:1-13

Governing Power and Goodness; or, Our Grace tried by Afflictions

Appears in 50 hymnals Topics: Hearing of Prayer and Salvation; Hearing of Prayer and Salvation First Line: Sing, all the nations to the Lord Lyrics: 1 Sing, all ye nations to the Lord, Sing with a joyful noise; With melody of sound record His honours and your joys. 2 Say to the Power that form'd the sky, "How terrible art thou! "Sinners before thy presence fly, "Or at thy feet they bow." 3 [Come see the wonders of our God, How glorious are his ways? In Moses hand he puts his rod, And clave the frighted seas. 4 He made the ebbing channel dry, While Israel pass'd the flood; There did the church begin their joy, And triumph in their God.] 5 He rules by his resistless might: Will rebel mortals dare Provoke th’ Eternal to the fight, And tempt that dreadful war. 6 Oh bless our God, and never cease; Ye saints, fulfil his praise; He keeps our life, maintains our peace, And guides our doubtful ways. 7 Lord, thou hast prov'd our suffering souls, To make our graces shine; So silver bears the burning coals, The metal to refine. 8 Through watery deeps and fiery ways We march at thy command, Led to possess the promis'd place By thine unerring hand. Man's mortality, and Christ's eternity; or, Saints die, but Christ and the Church lives

Appears in 50 hymnals Topics: Hearing of Prayer and Salvation; Hearing of Prayer and Salvation First Line: It is the Lord our Saviour's hand Lyrics: 1 It is the Lord our Saviour's hand Weakens our strength amidst the race; Disease and death at his command Arrest us, and cut short our days. 2 Spare us, O Lord, aloud we pray, Nor let our sun go down at noon; Thy years are one eternal day, And must thy children die so soon? 3 Yet in the midst of death and grief This thought our sorrow should assuage; "Our Father and our Saviour live; "Christ is the same through every age." 4 'Twas he this earth's foundation laid; Heaven is the building of his hand; This earth grows old, these heavens shall fade; And all be chang'd at his command. 5 The starry curtains of the sky, Like garments, shall be laid aside: But still thy throne stands firm on high, Thy church forever must abide. 6 Before thy face thy church shall live; And on thy throne thy children reign; This dying world shall they survive, And the dead saints be rais'd again. Scripture: Psalm 102:23-28

Who has believ'd thy Word

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Topics: Hearing of prayer and salvation Lyrics: Who has believed thy word, Or thy salvation known? Reveal thine arm, Almighty Lord, And glorify thy Son. The Jews esteemed him here Too mean for their belief; Sorrows his chief acquaintance were, And his companion, grief. They turned their eyes away, And treated him with scorn; But 'twas their grief upon him lay, Their sorrows he has borne. 'Twas for the stubborn Jews, And Gentiles then unknown, The God of justice pleased to bruise His best-beloved Son. "But I'll prolong his days, And make his kingdom stand; My pleasure," saith the God of grace, "Shall prosper in his hand." ["His joyful soul shall see The purchase of his pain And by his knowledge justify The guilty sons of men.] ["Ten thousand captive slaves, Released from death and sin, Shall quit their prisons and their graves And own his power divine.] ["Heav'n shall advance my Son To joys that earth denied; Who saw the follies men had done, And bore their sins, and died."] Scripture: Isaiah 53:1-5

How beauteous are their feet

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 711 hymnals Topics: Hearing of prayer and salvation Lyrics: How beauteous are their feet Who stand on Zion's hill! Who bring salvation on their tongues, And words of peace reveal! How charming is their voice! How sweet the tidings are! "Zion, behold thy Savior King; He reigns and triumphs here." How happy are our ears That hear this joyful sound, Which kings and prophets waited for, And sought, but never found! How blessed are our eyes That see this heav'nly light Prophets and kings desired it long, But died without the sight. The watchmen join their voice, And tuneful notes employ; Jerusalem breaks forth in songs, And deserts learn the joy. The Lord makes bare his arm Through all the earth abroad; Let every nation now behold Their Savior and their God! Scripture: Matthew 13:16-17

Prayer heard, and saints saved; or pride, atheism and oppression punished

Appears in 49 hymnals Topics: Hearing of Prayer and Salvation; Hearing of Prayer and Salvation First Line: Why doth the Lord depart so far? Lyrics: 1 Why doth the Lord depart so far? And why conceal his face, When great calamities appear, And times of deep distress? 2 Lord, shall the wicked still deride Thy justice and thy laws? Shall they advance their heads in pride, And slight the righteous cause. 3 They cast thy judgments from their sight, And then insult the poor, They boast in their exalted height, That they shall fall no more. 4 Arise, O God, lift up thine hand, Attend our humble cry; No enemy shall dare to stand, When God ascends on high. Pause. 5 Why do the men of malice rage, And say with foolish pride, The God of heaven will ne'er engage To fight on Zion's side. 6 But thou forever art our Lord; And powerful is thine hand, As when the Heathens felt thy sword, And perish'd from thy land. 7 Thou wilt prepare our hearts to pray, And cause thine ear to hear; Accept the vows thy children pay, And free thy saints from fear. 8 Proud tyrants shall no more oppress, No more despise the just; And mighty sinners shall confess, They are but earth and dust. Scripture: Psalm 10
