Pride and Death; or, The Vanity of Life and Riches

Appears in 44 hymnals Topics: Life and Riches their Vanity; Riches Their Vanity; Life and Riches their Vanity; Riches Their Vanity First Line: Why doth the man of riches grow Lyrics: 1 Why doth the man of riches grow To insolence and pride, To see his wealth and honours flow With every rising tide. 2 [Why doth he treat the poor with scorn, Made of the self-same clay, And boast as though his flesh was born Of better dust than they?] 3 Not all his treasures can procure His soul a short reprieve, Redeem from death one guilty hour, Or make his brother live. 4 Eternal life can ne'er be sold, The ransom is too high; Justice will ne'er be brib'd with gold, That man may never die. 5 He sees the brutish and the wise, The timorous and the brave, Quit their possessions, close their eyes, And hasten to the grave. 6 Yet 'tis his inward thought and pride, "My house shall ever stand; "And that my name may long abide, "I'll give it to my land." 7 Vain are his thoughts, his hopes are lost, How soon his memory dies! His name is written in the dust, Where his own body lies. Pause. 8 This is the folly of their way And yet their sons as vain Approve the words their fathers say, And act their works again. 9 Men void of wisdom and of grace, Tho' honour raise them high, Live like the beast, a thoughtless race, And like the beast they die. 10 [Laid in the grave like silly sheep, Death triumphs o'er them there, Till the last trumpet breaks their sleep, And wakes them in despair.] Scripture: Psalm 49:6-14

Vanity of the world

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: World Vanity of First Line: Wealth is a blessing only lent Lyrics: 1 Wealth is a blessing only lent, To be repaid by deeds of love; God gives his bounties to be spent, To hoard them will his anger move. 2 The world's esteem is but a bribe; To buy its peace we sell our own, Enslav'd by an applauding tribe, Who hate us while they make us known. 3 The joy that vain amusements give, To him who thoughtless sports and sings, Is like the honey of a hive, When guarded by a thousand stings. 4 'Tis thus the world rewards the fools Thank live upon her treach'rous smiles; She leads them, blindfold by here rules, And ruins all whom she beguiles. 5 'Tis thus that thousands hasten down From pleasure, into endless woe; And with a long despairing groan, Blaspheme their Maker as they go. 6 Warn'd by their woes, may we be wise, Delighting in a Saviour's charms; Then God will take us to the skies, Embrac'd in everlasting arms.

The Vanity of Man as mortal

Appears in 257 hymnals Topics: Vanity of Man as mortal First Line: Teach me the Measure of my Days Lyrics: 1 Teach me the Measure of my Days, Thou Maker of my Frame; I would survey Life's narrow Space, And learn how frail I am. 2 A Span is all that we can boast, An Inch or two of Time; Man is but Vanity and Dust In all his Flow'r and Prime. 3 See the vain Race of Mortals move Like Shadows o'er the Plain; They rage and strive, desire and love, But all the Noise is vain. 4 Some walk in Honour's gaudy Show, Some dig for golden Ore, They toil for Heirs they know not who, And strait are seen no more. 5 What should I wish or wait for then From Creatures, Earth and Dust? They make our Expectations vain, And disappoint our Trust. 6 Now I forbid my carnal Hope, My fond Desires recal; I give my mortal Int'rest up, And make my GOD my All. Scripture: Psalm 39:4-7

What are possessions, fame, and power

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 12 hymnals Topics: The Vanity of earthly Things Lyrics: 1 What are possessions, fame, and power The boasted splendour of the great? What gold, which dazzled eyes adore, And seek with endless toils and sweat? 2 Express their charms, declare their use, That we their merits may descry, Tell us what good they can produce, Or what important wants supply. 3 If, wounded with the sense of sin, To them for pardon we should pray, Will they restore our peace within, And wash our guilty stains away? 4 Can they celestial life inspire, Nature with power divine renew, With pure and sacred transports fire Our bosom, and our lust subdue? 5 When with the pangs of death we strive, And yield all comforts here for lost, Will they support us, will they give Kind succour, when we need it most? 6 When at th' Almighty's awful bar To hear our final doom we stand, Can they incline the Judge to spare, Or wrest the vengeance from his hand? 7 Can they protect us from despair, From the dark reign of death and hell, Crown us with bliss, and throne us where The just, in joys immortal, dwell? 8 Sinners, your idols we despise, If these reliefs they cannot grant; Why should we such delusions prize, And pine in everlasting want?

Vanity of the world

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 27 hymnals Topics: World Vanity of First Line: In vain the giddy world inquires Lyrics: 1 In vain the giddy world inquires, Forgetful of their God, "Who will supply our vast desire, "Or shew us any good?" 2 Thro' the wide circuit of the earth Their eager wishes rove, In chace of honor, wealth, and mirth, The phantoms of their love. 3 But oft these shadowy joys elude Their most intense pursuit; Or if they seize the fancied good, There's poison in the fruit. 4 Lord, from this world call off my love, Set my affections right: Bid me aspire to joys above, And walk no more by sight. 5 O let the glories of thy face Upon my bosom shine: Assur'd of thy forgiving grace, My joys will be divine. Scripture: Psalm 4:6
