Oh, Worship the King

Author: Robert Grant, 1779-1838 Meter: 10.10.11.11 Appears in 1,142 hymnals Topics: Beginning of Service; Praise, Adoration; Worship First Line: Oh, worship the King, all-glorious above Lyrics: 1 Oh, worship the King, all-glorious above. Oh, gratefully sing his pow'r and his love; Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. 2 Oh, tell of his might; oh, sing of his grace, Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, And dark is his path on the wings of the storm. 3 The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, your pow'r has founded of old; Established it fast by a changeless decree, And round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea. 4 Your bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light, It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. 5 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, In you do we trust, nor find you to fail; Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end, Our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend. 6 O measureless Might, ineffable love, While angels delight to hymn you above, The humbler creation, though feeble their lays, With true adoration shall sing to your praise. Used With Tune: HANOVER

We Gather Together to Ask the Lord's Blessing

Author: Theodore Baker Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #63 (1985) Meter: 12.11.12.11 Topics: Beginning of Worship Lyrics: 1 We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; he chastens and hastens his will to make known; the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing, sing praises to his name: he forgets not his own. 2 Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine; so from the beginning the fight we were winning; thou, Lord, wast at our side, all glory be thine! 3 We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant, and pray that thou still our defender wilt be; let thy congregation escape tribulation; thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free! Languages: English Tune Title: KREMSER

Holy God, We Praise Your Name

Author: I. Franz; R. Birch Hoyle Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #619 (1985) Meter: 7.8.7.8.7.7 Topics: Beginning of Worship Lyrics: 1 Holy God, we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you. All on earth your scepter claim; all in heav'n above adore you. Infinite your vast domain; everlasting is your reign. 2 Hark, the glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heav'ns with sweeet accord-- "Holy, holy, holy, Lord!" 3 Lo! the apostolic train join your sacred name to hallow; prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow; and from morn to set of sun through the church the song goes on. 4 Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, Three we name you, though in essence only One, undivided God, we claim you, and, adoring, bend the knee, while we own the mystery. 5 Glory through eternity: Spirit, Son, and blessed Father, God of gracious tenderness, at thy feet we sinners gather. All thy great and wondrous love we shall through the ages prove. Languages: English Tune Title: GROSSER GOTT

Felice Giardini

1716 - 1796 Person Name: Felice de Giardini Topics: Beginning of Worship Composer of "ITALIAN HYMN" in Rejoice in the Lord Felice Giardini, born in Italy. When young, he studied singing, harpsichord, and violin. He became a composer and violin virtuoso. By age 12 he was playing in theatre orchestras. His most instructive lesson: While playing a solo passage during an opera, he decided to show off his skills by improvising several bravura variations that the composer, Jommelli, had not written . Although the audience applauded loudly, Jomelli, who happened to be there, went up and slapped Giardini in the face. He learned a lesson from that. He toured Europe as a violinist, considered one of the greatest musical artists of his time. He served as orchestra leader and director of the Italian Opera in London, giving concerts. He tried to run a theatre in Naples, but encountered adversity. He went to Russia, but had little fortune there, where he died. John Perry

William Gardiner

1770 - 1853 Topics: Beginning of Worship Composer of "LYONS" in Rejoice in the Lord William Gardiner (b. Leicester, England, 1770; d. Leicester, 1853) The son of an English hosiery manufacturer, Gardiner took up his father's trade in addition to writing about music, composing, and editing. Having met Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven on his business travels, Gardiner then proceeded to help popularize their compositions, especially Beethoven's, in England. He recorded his memories of various musicians in Music and Friends (3 volumes, 1838-1853). In the first two volumes of Sacred Melodies (1812, 1815), Gardiner turned melodies from composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven into hymn tunes in an attempt to rejuvenate the singing of psalms. His work became an important model for American editors like Lowell Mason (see Mason's Boston Handel and Haydn Collection, 1822), and later hymnbook editors often turned to Gardiner as a source of tunes derived from classical music. Ludwig van Beethoven

1770 - 1827 Person Name: Beethoven Topics: The Lord's Day Beginning of Worship Composer of "GERMANY" in The Riverdale Hymn Book A giant in the history of music, Ludwig van Beethoven (b. Bonn, Germany, 1770; d. Vienna, Austria, 1827) progressed from early musical promise to worldwide, lasting fame. By the age of fourteen he was an accomplished viola and organ player, but he became famous primarily because of his compositions, including nine symphonies, eleven overtures, thirty piano sonatas, sixteen string quartets, the Mass in C, and the Missa Solemnis. He wrote no music for congregational use, but various arrangers adapted some of his musical themes as hymn tunes; the most famous of these is ODE TO JOY from the Ninth Symphony. Although it would appear that the great calamity of Beethoven's life was his loss of hearing, which turned to total deafness during the last decade of his life, he composed his greatest works during this period.
