How Vast the Benefits Divine

Author: Rev. Augustus M. Toplady; Dewey Westra Hymnal: Psalter Hymnal (Red) #379 (1934) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Divine Election Lyrics: 1 How vast the benefits divine, Which we in Christ possess! We are redeemed from sin and shame, And called to holiness. 'Tis not for works which we have done, These all to Him we owe; But He, of His electing love, Salvation doth bestow. 2 To Thee, O Lord, alone is due All glory and renown; Aught to ourselves we dare not take, Or rob Thee of Thy crown. Thou wast Thyself our Surety In God's redemption plan; In Thee His grace was give us, Long ere the world began. 3 Safe in the arms of sovereign love We ever shall remain; Nor shall the rage of earth or hell Make Thy sure counsel vain. Not one of all the chosen race But shall to heaven attain; Here they will share abounding grace, And there with Jesus reign. Languages: English Tune Title: SERAPH

Divine Grace Magnified

Hymnal: The Psalter #166 (1912) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Divine Election First Line: Praise waits in Zion, Lord, for Thee Lyrics: 1 Praise waits in Zion, Lord, for Thee, And unto Thee shall vows be paid; O Thou that hearest those who cry, To Thee by all shall prayer be made. 2 Against us sin has battled hard; For help we look to Thee and pray; Thou our transgressions wilt forgive, Yea, Thou wilt take them all away. 3 How blest are they whom Thou dost choose To come and in Thy courts abide; Communing in Thy holy house, With good we shall be satisfied. 4 By mighty deeds in righteousness Prayer's answer surely comes from Thee, O God our Saviour,God the trust Of all Thy saints on land or sea. 5 Thy power has set the mountains firm, O God Almighty, girt with strength; At Thy command the waves are still, The nations cease from war at length. 6 The tokens of Thy mighty power Lead men in every clime to fear; From east to west through all the earth Thou sendest gladness fare and near. 1810 - 1876 Person Name: Samuel S. Wesley Topics: Divine Election Composer of "AURELIA" in Psalter Hymnal (Red) Samuel Sebastian Wesley (b. London, England, 1810; d. Gloucester, England, 1876) was an English organist and composer. The grandson of Charles Wesley, he was born in London, and sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal as a boy. He learned composition and organ from his father, Samuel, completed a doctorate in music at Oxford, and composed for piano, organ, and choir. He was organist at Hereford Cathedral (1832-1835), Exeter Cathedral (1835-1842), Leeds Parish Church (1842-1849), Winchester Cathedral (1849-1865), and Gloucester Cathedral (1865-1876). Wesley strove to improve the standards of church music and the status of church musicians; his observations and plans for reform were published as A Few Words on Cathedral Music and the Music System of the Church (1849). He was the musical editor of Charles Kemble's A Selection of Psalms and Hymns (1864) and of the Wellburn Appendix of Original Hymns and Tunes (1875) but is best known as the compiler of The European Psalmist (1872), in which some 130 of the 733 hymn tunes were written by him.
