God Is My Strong Salvation

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 7.6.7.6 Appears in 288 hymnals Topics: Freedom from Fear Lyrics: 1 God is my strong salvation; what foe have I to fear? In peril and temptation my light, my help, is near. 2 Though hosts encamp around me, firm to the fight I stand; what terror can confound me, with God at my right hand? 3 Place on the Lord reliance, my soul, with courage wait; God's truth be thine affiance, when faint and desolate. 4 God's might thy heart shall strengthen, God's love thy joy increase; mercy thy days shall lengthen; the Lord will give thee peace. O LORD, You Are My Light

Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 with repeat Appears in 18 hymnals Topics: Freedom from Fear Lyrics: 1 O LORD, you are my light and my salvation near: then who will cause me fright or fill my heart with fear? While God my strength, my life sustains, secure from fear my soul remains, secure from fear my soul remains. 2 My one request has been and still this prayer I raise; that I may live within God's house for all my days. God's glorious beauty to admire, and in his temple to inquire, and in his temple to inquire. 3 When troubles round me swell, when fears and dangers throng, securely I will dwell in his pavilion strong. Within the shelter of God's tent he hides me till the storm is spent, he hides me till the storm is spent. 4 Uplifted on a rock above my foes around, amid the battle shock my song shall still resound. Then joyful offerings I will bring; the LORD God's praise my heart shall sing, the LORD God's praise my heart shall sing. Scripture: Psalm 27 Used With Tune: RHOSYMEDRE Text Sources: St. 1 Psalter, 1887; sts. 2-4 Psalter, 1912, alt.

Such Perfect Love My Shepherd Shows

Author: Henry Williams Baker Hymnal: Psalms for All Seasons #23E (2012) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Freedom from Fear Lyrics: 1 Such perfect love my Shepherd shows, whose goodness fails me never, whose hand all things I need bestows and watches me forever. 2 Where streams of living water flow, my loving Shepherd leads me, and where the verdant pastures grow with food from heaven feeds me. 3 When vain and foolish I have strayed, you, faithful Shepherd, sought me, and on your shoulder gently laid, then home, rejoicing, brought me. 4 I do not fear death's shadowed vale when you are here beside me; your rod and staff and strength prevail to comfort and to guide me. 5 You spread a table in my sight, your gifts of grace bestowing; and from your chalice I delight to taste your mercy flowing. 6 And so through all the length of days your goodness fails me never; Good Shepherd, may I sing your praise within your house forever. Scripture: Psalm 23 Tune Title: DOMINUS REGIT ME

John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: John B. Dykes, 1823-1876 Topics: Freedom from Fear Composer of "DOMINUS REGIT ME" in Psalms for All Seasons As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

Melchior Vulpius

1570 - 1615 Person Name: Melchoir Vulpius Topics: Freedom from Fear Composer of "CHRISTUS, DER IST MEIN LEBEN" in Psalms for All Seasons Born into a poor family named Fuchs, Melchior Vulpius (b. Wasungen, Henneberg, Germany, c. 1570; d. Weimar, Germany, 1615) had only limited educational opportunities and did not attend the university. He taught Latin in the school in Schleusingen, where he Latinized his surname, and from 1596 until his death served as a Lutheran cantor and teacher in Weimar. A distinguished composer, Vulpius wrote a St. Matthew Passion (1613), nearly two hundred motets in German and Latin, and over four hundred hymn tunes, many of which became popular in Lutheran churches, and some of which introduced the lively Italian balletto rhythms into the German hymn tunes. His music was published in Cantiones Sacrae (1602, 1604), Kirchengesangund Geistliche Lieder (1604, enlarged as Ein schon geistlich Gesanglmch, 1609), and posthumously in Cantionale Sacrum (1646).
