Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear

Author: John Keble, 1792-1866 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1,436 hymnals Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Evening Lyrics: 1 Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear, it is not night if thou be near; O may no earth-born cloud arise to hide thee from thy servant's eyes. 2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep my weary eyelids gently steep, be my last thought, how sweet to rest for ever on my Saviour's breast. 3 Abide with me from morn till eve, for without thee I cannot live; abide with me when night is nigh, for without thee I dare not die. 4 If some poor wandering child of thine have spurned today the voice divine, now, Lord, the gracious work begin; let him no more lie down in sin. 5 Watch by the sick; enrich the poor with blessings from thy boundless store; be every mourner's sleep tonight like infant's slumbers, pure and light. 6 Come near and bless us when we wake, ere through the world our way we take; till in the ocean of thy love we lose ourselves in heaven above. Lo, he comes with clouds descending

Author: John Cennick, 1718-1755; Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 8.7.8.7.4.4.4.7 Appears in 768 hymnals Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Advent Lyrics: 1 Lo, he comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train; Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. 2 Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him pierced and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, Shall the true Messiah see. 3 The dear tokens of His passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers; with what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture, Gaze we on those glorious scars! 4 Yea, amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:16 Used With Tune: HELMSLEY

The year is gone, beyond recall

Author: Anonymous; Francis Pott, 1832-1909 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #95 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Hymns for the Church Year New Year Lyrics: 1 The year is gone, beyond recall, with all its hopes and fears, with all its bright and gladdening smiles, with all its mourners’ tears; 2 thy thankful people praise thee, Lord, for countless gifts received; and pray for grace to keep the faith which Saints of old believed. 3 To thee we come, O gracious Lord, the new-born year to bless; defend our land from pestilence; hive peace and plenteousness; 4 forgive this nation’s many sins; the growth of vice restrain; and help us all with sin to strive, and crowns of life to gain. 5 From evil deeds that stain the past we now desire to flee; and pray that future years may all be spent, good Lord, for thee. 6 O Father, let thy watchful eye still look on us in love, that we may praise thee, year by year, with angel-hosts above. 7 All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run. For thy mercy and thy grace

Author: Henry Downton, 1818-1885 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #93 (2010) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Topics: Hymns for the Church Year New Year Lyrics: 1 For thy mercy and thy grace, faithful through another year, hear our song of thankfulness; Jesus, our Redeemer, hear. 2 In our weakness and distress, rock of strength, be thou our stay; in the pathless wilderness be our true and living Way. 3 Who of us death's awful road in the coming year shall tread? With thy rod and staff, O God, comfort thou his dying bed. 4 Make us faithful, keep us pure, keep us evermore thine own, help, O help us to endure, fit us for thy promised crown. 5 So within thy palace gate we shall praise, on golden strings, thee the only Potentate, Lord of lords, and King of kings. Thy life was given for me

Author: Frances Ridley Havergal, 1836-1879 Hymnal: CPWI Hymnal #146 (2010) Meter: 6.6.6.6.6.6 Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Passion and Holy Week Lyrics: 1 Thy life was given for me, thy blood, O Lord, was shed, that I might ransomed be, and quickened from the dead; thy life was given for me; what have I given for thee? 2 Long years were spent for me in weariness and woe, that through eternity thy glory I might know; long years were spent for me; have I spent one for thee? 3 Thy Father's home of light, thy rainbow-circled throne, were left for earthly night, for wanderings sad and lone; yea, all was left me; have I left aught for thee? 4 Thou, Lord, hast borne for me more than my tongue can tell of bitterest agony, to rescue me from hell; thou sufferedst all for me; what have I borne for thee? 5 And thou hast brought to me down from thy home above salvation full and free, thy pardon and thy love; great gifts thou broughtest me; what have I brought to thee? 6 O let my life be given my years for thee be spent; world-fetters all be riven, and joy with suff'ring blent: thou gavest thyself for me, I give myself to thee. Thomas Tallis

1505 - 1585 Person Name: Thomas Tallis, c.1505-1585 Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Evening Composer of "CANON (THE EIGHTH TUNE)" in CPWI Hymnal Thomas Tallis (b. Leicestershire [?], England, c. 1505; d. Greenwich, Kent, England 1585) was one of the few Tudor musicians who served during the reigns of Henry VIII: Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth I and managed to remain in the good favor of both Catholic and Protestant monarchs. He was court organist and composer from 1543 until his death, composing music for Roman Catholic masses and Anglican liturgies (depending on the monarch). With William Byrd, Tallis also enjoyed a long-term monopoly on music printing. Prior to his court connections Tallis had served at Waltham Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. He composed mostly church music, including Latin motets, English anthems, settings of the liturgy, magnificats, and two sets of lamentations. His most extensive contrapuntal work was the choral composition, "Spem in alium," a work in forty parts for eight five-voice choirs. He also provided nine modal psalm tunes for Matthew Parker's Psalter (c. 1561). Bert Polman

Michael Praetorius

1571 - 1621 Person Name: Michael Praetorius, 1571-1621 Topics: Hymns for the Church Year Christmas Harmonizer of "ES IST EIN' ROS'" in CPWI Hymnal Born into a staunchly Lutheran family, Michael Praetorius (b. Creuzburg, Germany, February 15, 1571; d. Wolfenbüttel, Germany, February 15, 1621) was educated at the University of Frankfort-an-der-Oder. In 1595 he began a long association with Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick, when he was appointed court organist and later music director and secretary. The duke resided in Wolfenbüttel, and Praetorius spent much of his time at the court there, eventually establishing his own residence in Wolfenbüttel as well. When the duke died, Praetorius officially retained his position, but he spent long periods of time engaged in various musical appointments in Dresden, Magdeburg, and Halle. Praetorius produced a prodigious amount of music and music theory. His church music consists of over one thousand titles, including the sixteen-volume Musae Sionae (1605-1612), which contains Lutheran hymns in settings ranging from two voices to multiple choirs. His Syntagma Musicum (1614-1619) is a veritable encyclopedia of music and includes valuable information about the musical instruments of his time. Bert Polman
