Harry Emerson Fosdick
1878 - 1969 Person Name: Harry Emerson Fosdick, 1878-1969 Topics: Peace and War Author of "God of Grace and God of Glory" in Singing the Living Tradition Born: May 24, 1878, Buffalo, New York.
Died: October 5, 1969, Bronxville, New York.
Fosdick attended Colgate University, Union Theological Seminary, and Columbia University. Ordained in 1903, he pastored at the First Baptist Church in Montclair, New Jersey, from 1904 to 1915. At Union Theological Seminary, he lectured on Baptist principles and homiletics (1908-1915) and was professor of practical theology (1915-1946). He also found time to serve as associate minister at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, New York (1919-1925), and pastor of Park Avenue Baptist Church (1929-1946). His picture was on the cover of Time magazine, September 21, 1925. His works include:

1873 - 1932 Person Name: John Hughes, 1873-1932 Topics: Peace and War Composer of "CWM RHONDDA" in Singing the Living Tradition John Hughes (b. Dowlais, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1873; d. Llantwit Fardre, Wales, 1932) received little formal education; at age twelve he was already working as a doorboy at a local mining company in Llantwit Fardre. He eventually became an official in the traffic department of the Great Western Railway. Much of his energy was devoted to the Salem Baptist Church in Pontypridd, where he served as both deacon and precentor. Hughes composed two anthems, a number of Sunday school marches, and a few hymn tunes, of which CWM RHONDDA is universally known, the tune was composed in 1905 Baptist Cymanfa Ganu (song festival) in Capel Rhondda, Pontypridd, Wales.

1770 - 1827 Person Name: Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827 Topics: Peace and War Composer of "HYMN TO JOY" in Singing the Living Tradition A giant in the history of music, Ludwig van Beethoven (b. Bonn, Germany, 1770; d. Vienna, Austria, 1827) progressed from early musical promise to worldwide, lasting fame. By the age of fourteen he was an accomplished viola and organ player, but he became famous primarily because of his compositions, including nine symphonies, eleven overtures, thirty piano sonatas, sixteen string quartets, the Mass in C, and the Missa Solemnis. He wrote no music for congregational use, but various arrangers adapted some of his musical themes as hymn tunes; the most famous of these is ODE TO JOY from the Ninth Symphony. Although it would appear that the great calamity of Beethoven's life was his loss of hearing, which turned to total deafness during the last decade of his life, he composed his greatest works during this period.
