How happy are all they who hear

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 301 hymnals Topics: Stages of Life Lyrics: 1 How happy are all they who hear true Wisdom's guiding voice; and who her understanding make their early, only choice. 2 For she has treasures greater far than east or west unfold; and her rewards more precious are than all their stores of gold. 3 In her right hand she holds to view a length of happy days; and riches with great honours joined are what her left displays. 4 She guides the young with innocence, in pleasure's paths to tread; a crown of glory she bestows upon the hoary head. 5 According as her labours rise, so her rewards increase; her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Scripture: Proverbs 3:13-17 Used With Tune: ST. STEPHEN (NEWINGTON) Text Sources: Scottish Paraphrases, 1781, Paraphrase 11, alt.

Lord, thy word abideth

Author: Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) Meter: 6.6.6.6 Appears in 203 hymnals Topics: Stages of Life Lyrics: 1 Lord, thy word abideth, and our footsteps guideth; who its truth believeth light and joy receiveth. 2 When our foes are near us, then thy word doth cheer us, word of consolation, message of salvation. 3 When the storms are o'er us, and dark clouds before us, then its light directeth, and our way protecteth. 4 Who can tell the pleasure, who recount the treasure by thy word imparted to the simple-hearted? 5 Word of mercy, giving succour to the living; word of life, supplying comfort to the dying. 6 O that we discerning its most holy learning, Lord, may love and fear thee, evermore be near thee! O God, Your Constant Care and Love

Author: H. Glen Lanier Hymnal: Moravian Book of Worship #804 (1995) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Stages of Life; Stages of Life Lyrics: 1 O God, your constant care and love are shed upon us from above, throughout our lives in ev'ry stage, from infancy to later age. 2 We thank you, Lord, for dreams of youth, for wisdom leading on to truth, for mem'ries gathered through the years, and faith that grows from joys and tears. 3 All time is yours, O Lord, to give; may we, in all the years we live, find that each day of life is new, a celebration, Lord, with you. 4 Let not the passing of the years rob us of joy or cause us fears; and make our faith, O Lord, hold true, that we may always rest in you. Scripture: Psalm 71:14-24 Languages: English Tune Title: MORNING HYMN

William Henry Monk

1823 - 1889 Person Name: William Henry Monk (1823-1889) Topics: Stages of Life Adapter and Harmonizer of "RAVENSHAW" in Ancient and Modern William H. Monk (b. Brompton, London, England, 1823; d. London, 1889) is best known for his music editing of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1868; 1875, and 1889 editions). He also adapted music from plainsong and added accompaniments for Introits for Use Throughout the Year, a book issued with that famous hymnal. Beginning in his teenage years, Monk held a number of musical positions. He became choirmaster at King's College in London in 1847 and was organist and choirmaster at St. Matthias, Stoke Newington, from 1852 to 1889, where he was influenced by the Oxford Movement. At St. Matthias, Monk also began daily choral services with the choir leading the congregation in music chosen according to the church year, including psalms chanted to plainsong. He composed over fifty hymn tunes and edited The Scottish Hymnal (1872 edition) and Wordsworth's Hymns for the Holy Year (1862) as well as the periodical Parish Choir (1840-1851). Bert Polman

Charles Coffin

1676 - 1749 Person Name: Charles Coffin (1676-1749) Topics: Stages of Life Author of "As now the sun's declining rays" in Ancient and Modern Coffin, Charles, born at Buzaney (Ardennes) in 1676, died 1749, was principal of the college at Beauvais, 1712 (succeeding the historian Rollin), and rector of the University of Paris, 1718. He published in 1727 some, of his Latin poems, for which he was already noted, and in 1736 the bulk of his hymns appeared in the Paris Breviary of that year. In the same year he published them as Hymni Sacri Auctore Carolo Coffin, and in 1755 a complete ed. of his Works was issued in 2 vols. To his Hymni Sacri is prefixed an interesting preface. The whole plan of his hymns, and of the Paris Breviary which he so largely influenced, comes out in his words. "In his porro scribendis Hymnis non tam poetico indulgendunv spiritui, quam nitoro et pietate consulendum esse existimavi. Pleraque igitur, argumentis convenientia e purissiinis Scripturae Sacrae fontibus deprompsi quac idoneis Ecclesiae cantui numeris alligarem." His hymns are described by a French critic as having less brilliancy than those of Santüil (q.v.), but more simplicity and unction. They number 100 in the edition of 1736. Translated into English by J. Chandler, I. Williams and others, are noted under their respective Latin first lines. [William T. Brooke] -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
