Depth of mercy! Can there be

Author: C. Wesley, 1707-1788 Appears in 811 hymnals Topics: Wrath Of God Lyrics: 1 Depth of mercy! Can there be Mercy still reserved for me? Can my God His wrath forbear? Me, the chief of sinners, spare? I have long withstood His grace, Long provoked Him to His face, Would not hearken to His calls, Grieved Him by a thousand falls. 2 Whence to me this waste of love? Ask my Advocate above; See the cause in Jesus' face. Now before the throne of grace. There for me the Saviour stands, Shows His wounds, and spread His hands; God is love! I know, I feel; Jesus weeps, and loves me still! 3 Jesus, answer from above; Is not all Thy nature love? Wilt thou not the wrong forget, Suffering me to kiss Thy feet? If I rightly read Thy heart, If Thou all compassion art, Bow Thine ear, in mercy bow, Pardon and accept me now. Used With Tune: CULFORD

Day of judgment--day of wonders

Author: John Newton Appears in 341 hymnals Topics: Wrath Of God Lyrics: 1 Day of judgment--day of wonders Hark! the trumpet's awful sound, Louder than a thousand thunders, Shakes the vast creation round! How the summons Will the sinner's heart confound. 2 See the Judge our nature wearing, Clothed in majesty divine! Ye who long for His appearing Then shall say, "This God is mine!" Gracious Saviour! Own me in that day for Thine! 3 At His call the dead awaken, Rise to life from earth and sea; All the powers of nature, shaken By His look, prepare to flee: Careless sinner! What will then become of thee? 4 But to those who have confessèd, Loved and served the Lord below, He will say, "Come near, ye blessed! See the kingdom I bestow! You forever Shall my love and glory know." Amen. Used With Tune: ST. AUSTIN

In Thy Wrath and Hot Displeasure

Hymnal: Psalter Hymnal (Red) #73 (1934) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Wrath Of God Lyrics: 1 In Thy wrath and hot displeasure, Chasten not Thy servant, Lord; Let Thy mercy, without measure, Help and peace to me afford. 2 Heavy is my tribulation, Sore my punishment has been; Broken by Thy indignation, I am troubled by my sin. 3 With my burden of transgression Heavy laden, overborne, Humbled low I make confession, For my folly now I mourn. 4 Weak and wounded, I implore Thee; Lord, to me Thy mercy show; All my prayer is now before Thee, All my trouble Thou dost know. 5 Darkness gathers, foes assail me, But I answer not a word; All my friends desert and fail me, Only Thou my cry hast heard. 6 Lord, in Thee I am confiding; Thou wilt answer when I call, Lest my foes, the good deriding, Triumph in Thy servant’s fall. 7 I am prone to halt and stumble, Grief and sorrow dwell within, Shame and guilt my spirit humble, I am sorry for my sin. 8 Foes about my soul are closing, Full of hatred, false, and strong; Choosing good, I find opposing All who love and do the wrong. 9 Lord, my God, do not forsake me, Let me know that Thou art near, Under Thy protection take me, As my Savior now appear. Scripture: Psalm 38 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. SYLVESTER

John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: Rev. John B. Dykes Topics: Wrath Of God Composer of "ST. AGNES" in Psalter Hymnal (Red) As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

Henri F. Hemy

1818 - 1888 Topics: Wrath Of God Composer of "ST. CATHERINE" in Psalter Hymnal (Red) Henri F. Hemy, born in the United Kingdom. Hemy spent time at sea as a young man, emigrating to Australia in 1850 with his family. Unable to make a decent living in Melbourne, he returned to Newcastle England. He was organist at St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Newcastle, later teaching professor of music at Tynemouth and at St. Cuthbert's College in Durham. He was pianist to Lord Ravensworth, Music Director of Ushaw College, and his orchestra played at fashionable venues in the region. He sang baritone as well. He composed waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and galops. 3 music works: Easy Hymn Tunes for Catholic Schools; Royal Modern Tutor for Pianoforte; Crown of Jesus. He was active in local politics and published a manifesto in the daily newspaper. He lost a ward election. He also painted artwork. He set most of Longfellow's works to music. John Perry

Joseph Parry

1841 - 1903 Topics: Wrath Of God Composer of "ABERYSTWYTH" in Trinity Psalter Hymnal Joseph Parry (b. Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1841; d. Penarth, Glamorganshire, 1903) was born into a poor but musical family. Although he showed musical gifts at an early age, he was sent to work in the puddling furnaces of a steel mill at the age of nine. His family immigrated to a Welsh settlement in Danville, Pennsylvania in 1854, where Parry later started a music school. He traveled in the United States and in Wales, performing, studying, and composing music, and he won several Eisteddfodau (singing competition) prizes. Parry studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at Cambridge, where part of his tuition was paid by interested community people who were eager to encourage his talent. From 1873 to 1879 he was professor of music at the Welsh University College in Aberystwyth. After establishing private schools of music in Aberystwyth and in Swan sea, he was lecturer and professor of music at the University College of South Wales in Cardiff (1888-1903). Parry composed oratorios, cantatas, an opera, orchestral and chamber music, as well as some four hundred hymn tunes. Bert Polman
