If Christ had not been raised from death

Author: Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #204 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need — in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope — in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Languages: English Tune Title: KINGSFOLD

Death of death, and hell's destruction, land me safe on Canaan's side! Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee. Abide with me: fast falls the eventide

Author: Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #580 (2005) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide: when other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see: O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness: where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee: in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. There is a land of pure delight

Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #804 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 There is a land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign; infinite day excludes the night, and pleasures banish pain. 2 There everlasting spring abides, and never-withering flowers; death, like a narrow sea, divides that heavenly land from ours. 3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood stand dressed in living green; so to the Jews old Canaan stood, while Jordan rolled between. 4 But timorous mortals start and shrink to cross the narrow sea, and linger shivering on the brink, and fear to launch away. 5 O could we make our doubts remove, those gloomy doubts that rise, and see the Canaan that we love with unbeclouded eyes; 6 Could we but climb where Moses stood, and view the landscape o'er, not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, should fright us from the shore! Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:1-2 Languages: English Tune Title: BEULAH

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven

Author: Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #160 (2005) Meter: 8.7.8.7.4.4.7 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King. 2 Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him, still the same for ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless: Praise him! Praise him! glorious in his faithfulness. 3 Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: Praise him! Praise him! widely as his mercy flows. 4 Frail as summer's flower we flourish; blows the wind and it is gone; but, while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise him! Praise him! Praise the high eternal One. 5 Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him; dwellers all in time and space. Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace. Scripture: Psalm 103 Languages: English Tune Title: PRAISE, MY SOUL

Summer suns are glowing

Author: William Walsham How (1823-1897) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #225 (2005) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Summer suns are glowing over land and sea; happy light is flowing, bountiful and free. Everything rejoices in the mellow rays; all earth's thousand voices swell the psalm of praise. 2 See God's mercy streaming over all the world, and his banner gleaming, everywhere unfurled. Broad and deep and glorious, as the heaven above, shines in might victorious his eternal love. 3 Lord, upon our blindness your pure radiance pour; for your loving-kindness make us love you more. And, when clouds are drifting dark across the sky, then, the veil uplifting, Father, still be nigh. 4 We will never doubt you, though you veil your light; life is dark without you; death with you is bright. Light of light, shine o'er us on our pilgrim way; still go on before us, to the endless day. Scripture: 1 Chronicles 16:23 Languages: English Tune Title: RUTH
