If Christ had not been raised from death

Author: Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #204 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need — in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope — in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Abide with me: fast falls the eventide

Author: Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #580 (2005) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide: when other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see: O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness: where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee: in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. There is a land of pure delight

Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #804 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 There is a land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign; infinite day excludes the night, and pleasures banish pain. 2 There everlasting spring abides, and never-withering flowers; death, like a narrow sea, divides that heavenly land from ours. 3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood stand dressed in living green; so to the Jews old Canaan stood, while Jordan rolled between. 4 But timorous mortals start and shrink to cross the narrow sea, and linger shivering on the brink, and fear to launch away. 5 O could we make our doubts remove, those gloomy doubts that rise, and see the Canaan that we love with unbeclouded eyes; 6 Could we but climb where Moses stood, and view the landscape o'er, not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, should fright us from the shore! Praise him! glorious in his faithfulness. 3 Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: Praise him! Praise him! widely as his mercy flows. 4 Frail as summer's flower we flourish; blows the wind and it is gone; but, while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise him! Praise him! Praise the high eternal One. 5 Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him; dwellers all in time and space. Praise him! Praise him! Summer suns are glowing

Author: William Walsham How (1823-1897) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #225 (2005) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Summer suns are glowing over land and sea; happy light is flowing, bountiful and free. Everything rejoices in the mellow rays; all earth's thousand voices swell the psalm of praise. 2 See God's mercy streaming over all the world, and his banner gleaming, everywhere unfurled. Broad and deep and glorious, as the heaven above, shines in might victorious his eternal love. 3 Lord, upon our blindness your pure radiance pour; for your loving-kindness make us love you more. And, when clouds are drifting dark across the sky, then, the veil uplifting, Father, still be nigh. 4 We will never doubt you, though you veil your light; life is dark without you; death with you is bright. Light of light, shine o'er us on our pilgrim way; still go on before us, to the endless day. Scripture: 1 Chronicles 16:23 Languages: English Tune Title: RUTH

Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know his voice who ruled them while he lived below. 3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart and all is darkened in the vale of tears, then you shall better know his love, his heart, who comes to soothe your sorrow, calm your fears. Be still, my soul: for Jesus can repay from his own fullness all he takes away. 4 Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be for ever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgotten, love’s pure joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessèd we shall meet at last. Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:17 Languages: English Tune Title: FINLANDIA

Rock of ages, cleft for me

Author: Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #772 (2013) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed, be of sin the double cure: cleanse me from its guilt and power. 2 Not the labours of my hands can fulfil thy law's demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, all for sin could not atone: thou must save, and thou alone. 3 Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Saviour, or I die. 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyelids close in death, when I soar through tracts unknown, see thee on thy judgement throne; Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. The God of love my shepherd is

Author: George Herbert (1593-1633) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #792 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 The God of love my shepherd is, and he that doth me feed; while he is mine and I am his, what can I want or need? 2 He leads me to the tender grass, where I both feed and rest; then to the streams that gently pass: in both I have the best. 3 Or if I stray, he doth convert, and bring my mind in frame, and all this not for my desert, but for his holy name. 4 Yea, in death's shady black abode well may I walk, not fear; for thou art with me, and thy rod to guide, thy staff to bear. 5 Surely thy sweet and wondrous love shall measure all my days; and, as it never shall remove, so neither shall my praise. The King of love my shepherd is

Author: Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #794a (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever. 2 Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me. 4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spread'st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever. The Lord my pasture shall prepare

Author: Joseph Addison (1672-1719) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #798 (2013) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 The Lord my pasture shall prepare, and feed me with a shepherd's care; his presence shall my wants supply, and guard me with a watchful eye; my noonday walks he shall attend, and all my midnight hours defend. 2 When in the sultry glebe I faint, or on the thirsty mountain pant, to fertile vales and dewy meads my weary wandering steps he leads, where peaceful rivers, soft and slow, amid the verdant landscape flow. 3 Though in a bare and rugged way through devious lonely wilds I stray, thy bounty shall my pains beguile; the barren wilderness shall smile with sudden greens and herbage crowned, and streams shall murmur all around. 4 Though in the paths of death I tread, with gloomy horrors overspread, my steadfast heart shall fear no ill, for thou, 0 Lord, art with me still: thy friendly staff shall give me aid, and guide me through the dreadful shade. Year by year, from past to future

Author: Alan Luff (b. 1928) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #829 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Year by year, from past to future worship marks our upward climb, sets the rhythm of our journey to eternity through time: though the outward things diminish we are held more firm by grace, following God's heavenward calling and the everlasting prize. 2 As we seek to weave life's fabric on the lengthening loom of days, may Christ guide the threads that form it, be the pattern it displays; may the Father, master craftsman, sorrowing over each mistake, plan for us a new perfection from the ugliness we make. 3 Though we long for the adventure of the mystery of bliss, to the pilgrim's eyes the pathway breaks, and ends in death's abyss; but within the dark are waiting hands that bear the print of nails, which will hold us safe and bear us where the worship never fails. Glory to thee, my God, this night

Author: Thomas Ken (1637-1711) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #15 (2013) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Death and Bereavement Lyrics: 1 Glory to thee, my God, this night for all the blessings of the light; keep me, O keep me, King of kings, beneath thy own almighty wings. 2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, the ill that I this day have done, that with the world, myself, and thee, I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. 3 Teach me to live, that I may dread the grave as little as my bed; teach me to die, that so I may rise glorious at the aweful day. 4 O may my soul on thee repose, and with sweet sleep my eyelids close, sleep that may me more vigorous make to serve my God when I awake. 5 When in the night I sleepless lie, my soul with heavenly thoughts supply; let no ill dreams disturb my rest, no powers of darkness me molest. 6 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him, all creatures here below, praise him above, angelic host, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
