Give rest, O Christ

Author: William John Birkbeck (1869-1916) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #351 (2013) Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy saints, where sorrow and pain are no more; neither sighing, but life everlasting. Thou only art immortal, the Creator and Maker of man; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and unto earth shall we return; for so thou didst ordain when thou createdst me, saying: 'Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.' All we go down to the dust, and, weeping o'er the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy saints, where sorrow and pain are no more; neither sighing, but life everlasting. They whose course on earth is o'er

Author: J. M. Neale, 1818-66 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #462 (1986) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 THEY whose course on earth is o’er, Think they of their brethren more? They before the throne who bow, Feel they for their brethren now? 2 We by enemies distrest, They in paradise at rest; We the captives, they the freed; We and they are one indeed: 3 One in all we seek or shun, One, because our Lord is one; One in home and one in love; We below, and they above. 4 They whom space on earth divides, Mountains, rivers, ocean-tides; Have they with each other part? Have they fellowship in heart? 5 Each to each may be unknown, Wide apart their lots be thrown; Yet in sacrament and prayer Each with other hath a share. 6 Saints departed, even thus Hold communion still with us; Still with us, beyond the veil, Praising, pleading without fail. 7 So with them our hearts we raise, Share their work and join their praise, Rendering worship, thanks and love To the Trinity above. Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side

Author: Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel (1697-after 1768); Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813-1897) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #594 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side; bear patiently the cross of grief and pain; leave to your God to order and provide; in every change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. 2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future as he has the past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake, all now mysterious shall be clear at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know his voice, who ruled them while he dwelt below. 3 Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart and all is darkened in the vale of tears, then you shall better know his love, his heart, who comes to soothe your sorrow, calm your fears. Be still, my soul: for Jesus can repay from his own fullness all he takes away. 4 Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be for ever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief and fear are gone, sorrow forgotten, love's pure joy restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessèd we shall meet at last. Scripture: Psalm 124 Languages: English Tune Title: FINLANDIA

Rock of ages, cleft for me

Author: Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #772 (2013) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy riven side which flowed, be of sin the double cure: cleanse me from its guilt and power. 2 Not the labours of my hands can fulfil thy law's demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, all for sin could not atone: thou must save, and thou alone. 3 Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Saviour, or I die. 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyelids close in death, when I soar through tracts unknown, see thee on thy judgement throne; Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Lord, it belongs not to my care

Author: Richard Baxter, 1615-91 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #402 (1986) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Lord, it belongs not to my care Whether I die or live; To love and serve thee is my share, And this thy grace must give. 2 If life be long, I will be glad That I may long obey; If short, yet why should I be sad To end my little day! 3 Christ leads me through no darker rooms Than he went through before; He that into God's kingdom comes Must enter by this door. 4 Come, Lord, when grace hath made me meet Thy blessèd face to see: For if thy work on earth be sweet, What will thy glory be! 5 My knowledge of that life is small, The eye of faith is dim; But 'tis enough that Christ knows all, And I shall be with him. In heavenly love abiding

Author: Anna Laetitia Waring (1823-1910) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #681 (2013) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here: the storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid; but God is round about me, and can I be dismayed? 2 Wherever he may guide me, no want shall turn me back; my Shepherd is beside me, and nothing can I lack: his wisdom ever waketh, his sight is never dim, he knows the way he taketh, and I will walk with him. 3 Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen; bright skies will soon be o'er me, where darkest clouds have been; my hope I cannot measure, my path to life is free; my Saviour has my treasure, and he will walk with me. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide

Author: Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #10 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide! when other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? who like thyself my guide and stay can be? through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me. 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies: Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me! The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended

Author: John Ellerton (1826-1893) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #24 (2013) Meter: 9.8.9.8 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended, the darkness falls at thy behest; to thee our morning hymns ascended, thy praise shall sanctify our rest. 2 We thank thee that thy Church unsleeping, while earth rolls onward into light, through all the world her watch is keeping, and rests not now by day or night. 3 As o'er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, nor dies the strain of praise away. 4 The sun that bids us rest is waking our brethren 'neath the western sky, and hour by hour fresh lips are making thy wondrous doings heard on high. 5 So be it, Lord: thy throne shall never, like earth's proud empires, pass away; thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever, till all thy creatures own thy sway. If Christ had not been raised from death

Author: Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #204 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need — in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope — in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Joy and triumph everlasting

Author: Adam of St Victor; Robert Bridges, 1844-1930 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #229 (1986) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7.8.8 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Joy and triumph everlasting Hath the heavenly Church on high; For that pure immortal gladness All our feast-days mourn and sigh: Yet in death’s dark desert wild Doth the mother aid her child, Guards celestial thence attend us, Stand in combat to defend us. 2 Here the world’s perpetual warfare Holds from heaven the soul apart; Legioned foes in shadowy terror Vex the Sabbath of the heart. O how happy that estate Where delight doth not abate; For that home the spirit yearneth, Where none languisheth nor mourneth. 3 There the body hath no torment, There the mind is free from care, There is every voice rejoicing, Every heart is loving there. Angels in that city dwell; Them their King delighteth well: Still they joy and weary never, More and more desiring ever. 4 There the seers and fathers holy, There the prophets glorified, All their doubts and darkness ended, In the Light of light abide. There the Saints, whose memories old We in faithful hymns uphold, Have forgot their bitter story In the joy of Jesu’s glory. 5 There from lowliness exalted Dwelleth Mary, Queen of grace, Ever with her presence pleading 'Gainst the sin of Adam's race. To that glory of the blest, By their prayers and faith confest, Us, us too, when death hath freed us, Christ of his good mercy lead us. Languages: English Tune Title: GENEVAN PSALM 42

There is a land of pure delight

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #460 (1986) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign; Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain. 2 There everlasting spring abides, And never-withering flowers; Death, like a narrow sea, divides That heavenly land from ours. 3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood Stand dressed in living green; So to the Jews old Canaan stood, While Jordan rolled between. 4 But timorous mortals start and shrink To cross the narrow sea, And linger shivering on the brink, And fear to launch away. 5 O could we make our doubts remove, Those gloomy doubts that rise, And see the Canaan that we love With unbeclouded eyes! 6 Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er, Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, Should fright us from the shore! Author: Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #659 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Here from all nations, all tongues, and all peoples, countless the crowd but their voices are one; vast is the sight and majestic their singing: 'God has the victory; he reigns from the throne!' 2 These have come out of the hardest oppression, now they may stand in the presence of God, serving their Lord day and night in his temple, ransomed and cleansed by the Lamb's precious blood. 3 Gone is their thirst and no more shall they hunger, God is their shelter, his power at their side: sun shall not pain them, no burning will torture; Jesus the Lamb is their shepherd and guide. 4 He will go with them to clear living water flowing from springs which his mercy supplies; gone is their grief and their trials are over, God wipes away every tear from their eyes. 5 Blessing and glory and wisdom and power be to the Saviour again and again; might and thanksgiving and honour for ever be to our God: Alleluia! Amen. Scripture: Revelation 7 Languages: English Tune Title: O QUANTA QUALIA

Jerusalem the golden

Author: John Mason Neale (1818-1866); Bernard of Cluny (12h century) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #683 (2013) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice opprest. I know not, O I know not what joys await us there, what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. 2 They stand, those halls of Sion, conjubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng; the Prince is ever with them, the daylight is serene, the pastures of the blessèd are decked in glorious sheen. 3 There is the throne of David; and there, from care released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; and they, who with their leader have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white. 4 O sweet and blessèd country, the home of God's elect! O sweet and blessèd country that eager hearts expect! Jesu, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest; who art, with God the Father and Spirit, ever blest. O God, our help in ages past

Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #746 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home; 2 Under the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home. O love that wilt not let me go

Author: George Matheson (1842-1906) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #752 (2013) Meter: 8.8.8.8.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 O love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. 2 O light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee; my heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine's blaze its day may brighter, fairer be. 3 O joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be. 4 O cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee; I lay in dust life's glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red life that shall endless be. The God of love my shepherd is

Author: George Herbert (1593-1633) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #792 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 The God of love my shepherd is, and he that doth me feed; while he is mine and I am his, what can I want or need? 2 He leads me to the tender grass, where I both feed and rest; then to the streams that gently pass: in both I have the best. 3 Or if I stray, he doth convert, and bring my mind in frame, and all this not for my desert, but for his holy name. 4 Yea, in death's shady black abode well may I walk, not fear; for thou art with me, and thy rod to guide, thy staff to bear. 5 Surely thy sweet and wondrous love shall measure all my days; and, as it never shall remove, so neither shall my praise. The King of love my shepherd is

Author: Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #794a (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Funerals and The Departed Lyrics: 1 The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever. 2 Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me. 4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spread'st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house for ever.
