The true God our Refuge, or, Idolatry reproved

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #202b (1786) Topics: Idolatry reproved; Idolatry reproved First Line: Not to ourselves, who are but dust Lyrics: 1 Not to ourselves, who are but dust, Not to ourselves is glory due, Eternal God, thou only just, Thou only gracious, wise and true. 2 Display to earth thy dreadful name; Why should a heathen's haughty tongue Insult us, and, to raise our shame, Say, Where's the God you've serv'd so long? 3 The God we serve maintains his throne, Above the clouds, beyond the skies; Through all the earth his will is done, He knows our groans, he hears our cries. 4 But the vain idols they adore Are senseless shapes of stone and wood: At best a mass of glittering ore, A silver saint, and golden god. 5 [With eyes and ears, they carve the head; Deaf are their ears, their eyes are blind; In vain are costly offerings made, And vows are scatter'd in the wind. 6 Their feet were never made to move, Nor hands to save when mortals pray; Mortals that pay them fear or love, Seem to be blind and deaf as they.] 7 Oh Israel, make the Lord thy hope, Thy help, thy refuge, and thy rest; The Lord shall build thy ruins up, And bless the people and the priest. 8 The dead no more can speak thy praise, They dwell in silence and the grave; But we shall live to sing thy grace, And tell the world thy power to save. Idolatry reproved

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #203 (1786) Topics: Idolatry reproved; Idolatry reproved First Line: Not to our names, thou only just and true Lyrics: 1 Not to our names, thou only just and true Not to our worthless names is glory due: Thy power and grace, thy truth and justice claim Immortal honours to thy sovereign name; Shine thro' the earth from heaven thy blest abode, Nor let the heathens say, And where's your God. 2 Heaven is thine higher court there stands thy throne And through the lower worlds thy will is done: God fram'd this earth, the starry heavens he spread, But fools adore the gods their hands have made; The kneeling croud, with looks devout behold Their silver saviours, and their saints of gold. 3 [Vain are those artful shapes of eyes and ears; The molten image neither sees nor hears: Their hands are helpless, nor their feet can move, They have no speech, nor thought, nor power, nor love; Yet sottish mortals make their long complaints To their deaf idols, and their moveless saints. 4 The rich have statues well adorn'd with gold; The poor content with gods of coarser mould, With tools of iron carve the senseless stock Lopt from a tree, or broken from a rock; People and priests drive on the solemn trade, And trust the gods that saws and hammers made. 5 Be heaven and earth amaz'd! 'Tis hard to say Which is more stupid, or their gods, or they. O Israel trust the Lord: He hears and sees, He knows thy sorrows and restores thy peace; His worship does a thousand comforts yield, He is thy help, and he thine heavenly shield. 6 In God we trust; our impious foes in vain Attempt our ruin and oppose his reign; Had they prevail'd darkness had clos'd our days, And death and silence had forbid his praise: But we are sav'd, and live: Let songs arise, And Zion bless the God that built the skies. Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.31 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Preserve me, Lord, in time of need Lyrics: Preserve me, Lord, in time of need, For succor to thy throne I flee, But have no merits there to plead: My goodness cannot reach to thee. Oft have my heart and tongue confessed How empty and how poor I am; My praise can never make thee blessed, Nor add new glories to thy name. Yet, Lord, thy saints on earth may reap Some profit by the good we do; These are the company I keep, These are the choicest friends I know. Let others choose the sons of mirth To give a relish to their wine; I love the men of heav'nly birth, Whose thoughts and language are divine. Scripture: Psalm 16 Languages: English

Psalm 16 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.32 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: How fast their guilt and sorrows rise Lyrics: How fast their guilt and sorrows rise Who haste to seek some idol-god! I will not taste their sacrifice, Their offerings of forbidden blood. My God provides a richer cup, And nobler food to live upon; He for my life has offered up Jesus, his best-beloved Son. His love is my perpetual feast; By day his counsels guide me right; And be his name for ever blessed, Who gives me sweet advice by night. I set him still before mine eyes; At my right hand he stands prepared To keep my soul from all surprise, And be my everlasting guard. Scripture: Psalm 16 Languages: English

Though in the dust I lay my head, Yet, gracious God, thou wilt not leave My soul for ever with the dead, Nor lose thy children in the grave. My flesh shall thy first call obey, Shake off the dust, and rise on high; Then shalt thou lead the wondrous way Up to thy throne above the sky. There streams of endless pleasure flow; And full discoveries of thy grace (Which we but tasted here below) Spread heav'nly joys through all the place. Scripture: Psalm 16 Languages: English

Psalm 16 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.34 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Save me, O Lord, from every foe Lyrics: Save me, O Lord, from every foe; In thee my trust I place, Though all the good that I can do Can ne'er deserve thy grace. Yet if my God prolong my breath, The saints may profit by 't; The saints, the glory of the earth, The men of my delight. Let heathens to their idols haste, And worship wood or stone; But my delightful lot is cast Where the true God is known. His hand provides my constant food, He fills my daily cup; Much am I pleased with present good, But more rejoice in hope. God is my portion and my joy, His counsels are my light; He gives me sweet advice by day, And gentle hints by night. My soul would all her thoughts approve To his all-seeing eye; Not death, nor hell, my hope shall move, While such a Friend is nigh. Scripture: Psalm 16:1-8 Languages: English

Psalm 16 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.35 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: I set the Lord before my face Lyrics: I set the Lord before my face, He bears my courage up; My heart and tongue their joys express, My flesh shall rest in hope. "My spirit, Lord, thou wilt not leave Where souls departed are; Nor quit my body to the grave, To see corruption there. "Thou wilt reveal the path of life, And raise me to thy throne; Thy courts immortal pleasure give, Thy presence joys unknown." [Thus, in the name of Christ, the Lord, The holy David sung; And Providence fulfils the word Of his prophetic tongue. Jesus, whom ev'ry saint adores, Was crucified and slain: Behold, the tomb its prey restores! Behold, he lives again! When shall my feet arise and stand On heav'n's eternal hills? There sits the Son at God's right hand, And there the Father smiles.] Scripture: Psalm 16 Languages: English

Psalm 115

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.251 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Not to ourselves, who are but dust Lyrics: Not to ourselves, who are but dust, Not to ourselves is glory due, Eternal God, thou only just, Thou only gracious, wise, and true. Shine forth in all thy dreadful name; Why should a heathen's haughty tongue Insult us, and, to raise our shame, Say, "Where's the God you've served so long?" The God we serve maintains his throne Above the clouds, beyond the skies; Through all the earth his will is done; He knows our groans, he hears our cries. But the vain idols they adore Are senseless shapes of stone and wood; At best a mass of glitt'ring ore, A silver saint or golden god. [With eyes and ears they carve their head; Deaf are their ears, their eyes are blind; In vain are costly off'rings made, And vows are scattered in the wind. Their feet were never made to move, Nor hands to save when mortals pray; Mortals that pay them fear or love Seem to be blind and deaf as they.] O Isr'el! make the Lord thy hope, Thy help, thy refuge, and thy rest; The Lord shall build thy ruins up, And bless the people and the priest. The dead no more can speak thy praise, They dwell in silence and the grave; But we shall live to sing thy grace, And tell the world thy power to save. Scripture: Psalm 115 Languages: English

Psalm 115

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.252 (1806) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Not to our names, thou only just and true Lyrics: Not to our names, thou only just and true, Not to our worthless names is glory due; Thy power and grace, thy truth and justice, claim Immortal honors to thy sovereign name: Shine through the earth from heav'n, thy blest abode Nor let the heathens say, "And where's your God?" Heav'n is thine higher court, there stands thy throne, And through the lower worlds thy will is done; Our God framed all this earth, these heav'ns he spread; But fools adore the gods their hands have made: The kneeling crowd, with looks devout, behold Their silver saviors, and their saints of gold. [Vain are those artful shapes of eyes and ears; The molten image neither sees nor hears; Their hands are helpless, nor their feet can move, They have no speech, nor thought, nor power, nor love; Yet sottish mortals make their long complaints To their deaf idols and their moveless saints. The rich have statues well adorned with gold; The poor, content with gods of coarser mould, With tools of iron carve the senseless stock, Lopped from a tree, or broken from a rock; People and priest drive on the solemn trade, And trust the gods that saws and hammers made.] Be heav'n and earth amazed! 'Tis hard to say Which is more stupid, or their gods or they: O Isr'el, trust the Lord; he hears and sees, He knows thy sorrows and restores thy peace; His worship does a thousand comforts yield, He is thy help, and he thy heav'nly shield. O Britain, trust the Lord: thy foes in vain Attempt thy ruin, and oppose his reign; Had they prevailed, darkness had closed our days, And death and silence had forbid his praise: But we are saved, and live; let songs arise, And Britain bless the God that built the skies. Psalm 135 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.307 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Praise ye the Lord, exalt his name Lyrics: Praise ye the Lord, exalt his name, While in his holy courts ye wait, Ye saints, that to his house belong, Or stand attending at his gate. Praise ye the Lord, the Lord is good; To praise his name is sweet employ: Isr'el he chose of old, and still His church is his peculiar joy. The Lord himself will judge his saints; He treats his servants as his friends; And when he hears their sore complaints, Repents the sorrows that he sends. Through every age the Lord declares His name, and breaks th' oppressor's rod He gives his suff'ring servants rest, And will be known th' Almighty God. Bless ye the Lord, who taste his love, People and priest, exalt his name: Amongst his saints he ever dwells; His church is his Jerusalem. Scripture: Psalm 135:1-4 Languages: English

Psalm 135 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.308 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Great is the Lord, exalted high Lyrics: Great is the Lord, exalted high Above all powers and every throne: Whate'er he please, in earth or sea, Or heav'n or hell, his hand hath done. At his command the vapors rise, The lightnings flash, the thunders roar; He pours the rain, he brings the wind And tempest from his airy store. 'Twas he those dreadful tokens sent, O Egypt, through thy stubborn land, When all thy first-born, beasts and men, Fell dead by his avenging hand. What mighty nations, mighty kings, He slew, and their whole country gave To Isr'el, whom his hand redeemed, No more to be proud Pharaoh's slave! His power the same, the same his grace, That saves us from the hosts of hell; And heav'n he gives us to possess, Whence those apostate angels fell. Scripture: Psalm 135:5-12 Languages: English

Psalm 135

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.309 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Idolatry reproved First Line: Awake, ye saints; to praise your King Lyrics: Awake, ye saints; to praise your King, Your sweetest passions raise, Your pious pleasure, while you sing, Increasing with the praise. Great is the Lord, and works unknown Are his divine employ; But still his saints are near his throne, His treasure and his joy. Heav'n, earth, and sea confess his hand; He bids the vapors rise; Lightning and storm at his command Sweep through the sounding skies. All power that gods or kings have claimed Is found with him alone But heathen gods should ne'er be named Where our Jehovah's known. Which of the stocks or stones they trust Can give them showers of rain? In vain they worship glitt'ring dust, And pray to gold in vain. [Their gods have tongues that cannot talk, Such as their makers gave; Their feet were ne'er designed to walk, Nor hands have power to save. Blind are their eyes, their ears are deaf, Nor hear when mortals pray; Mortals that wait for their relief Are blind and deaf as they.] O Britain, know thy living God, Serve him with faith and fear; He makes thy churches his abode, And claims thine honors there.
