Blessed Bible! how I love it!

Author: Phebe Palmer Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #16 (1873) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: The Bible Lyrics: 1 Blessed Bible! how I love it! How it doth my bosom cheer! What on earth like this to covet? Oh, what stores of wealth are here! Man was lost, and doomed to sorrow, Not one ray of light or bliss Could he from earth's treasures borrow, Till his way was cheered by this. Blessed Bible! Blessed Bible! How thou dost my spirit cheer! 2 Yes, I'll to my bosom press thee; Precious word, I'll hide thee here; Sure my very heart will bless thee, For thou ever sayest, Good cheer! Speak poor heart, and tell thy ponderings, Tell how far thy rovings led, When this book brought back thy wanderings, Speaking life as from the dead. Blessed Bible! Blessed Bible! How thou dost my spirit cheer! 3 Yes, sweet Bible! I will hide thee Deep--yes, deeper in this heart; Thou through all my life wilt guide me, And in death we will not part. Part in death? no, never! never! Through death's vale I'll lean on thee; Then in worlds above, forever, Sweeter still thy truths shall be. Blessed Bible! Blessed Bible! How thou dost my spirit cheer! Scripture: Psalm 119:11

Author: H. W. Flickinger Hymnal: Victorious Life Hymns #93 (1919) Topics: The Bible First Line: Just a word from the Bible with pray'r Lyrics: 1 Just a word from the Bible with pray’r, At the dawn of the day and its close; It will guide thro’ the day’s busy struggles, It will fit one for night’s calm repose. Refrain: Keep the fire on the home altar burning, Let the incense of praise daily rise To the throne of the Father in heaven, For the blessings He daily supplies. 2 How it sweetens the joys of the home life, When the altar of worship is reared; Where the old and the young kneel together, And the name of the Lord is revered. [Refrain] 3 Where the song and the pray’r sweetly mingle ‘Round the circle of praise ev’ry day, Such a home the dear Lord loves to dwell in, For He knows He is welcome to stay. A mother laid her baby in manger lined with straw;then, in the shepherds' story, his call from God foresaw. She nurtured him and taught himthe way that he must live. This book of books I'd rather own

Author: Anon. Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #7 (1873) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Bible; Value of the Bible Lyrics: 1 This book of books I'd rather own, Than all the gold or gems That e'er in monarchs' coffers shone;-- Than all their diadems. 2 Nay, were the seas one chrysolyte, The earth a golden ball, And diamonds all the stars of night, This book were worth them all. 3 Without a doubt, this book is worth All else to mortals given; For what are all the joys of earth, Compared to joys in heaven? 4 This is the guide our Father gave, To lead to realms of day-- A star whose luster gilds the grave-- The life, the light, the way.

Deep in the Shadows of the Past

Author: Brian Wren Hymnal: The New Century Hymnal #320 (1995) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Hymns About the Bible Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads traveled with their God across the desert sands. The dawning hope of humankind by them was sensed and shown: a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods, they met a mystery: a hidden, uncompleted Name - "I AM WHAT I WILL BE"; And by their tents, around their fires, in story, song, and law, they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Abraham to Nazareth the promise changed and grew, while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, and some, in letters and laments, in prophecy and praise, recovered, kindled, and expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders, long ago, who sifted, copied, and preserved the Bible that we know, Give thanks and find its story yet our promise, strength, and call: the working model of our faith, alive with hope for all.
