O Lord, the Holy Innocents

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander Hymnal: The Hymnal #87 (1916) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Holy Innocents Lyrics: O Lord, the Holy Innocents Laid down for thee their infant life, And martyrs brave and patient saints Have stood for thee in fire and strife. We wear the cross they wore of old Our lips have learned like vows to make; We need not die; we cannot fight; What may we do for Jesus' sake? O day by day each Christian child Has much to do, without, within; A death to die for Jesus' sake, A weary war to wage with sin. When deep within our swelling hearts The thoughts of pride and anger rise, When bitter words are on our tongues, And tears of passion in our eyes; Then we may stay the angry blow, Then we may check the hasty word, Give gentle answers back again, And fight a battle for our Lord. With smiles of peace and looks of love, Light in our dwellings we may make, Bid kind good-humour brighten there, And do all still for Jesus' sake. There's not a child so weak and small But has his little cross to take, His little work of love and praise, That he may do for Jesus' sake. Languages: English Tune Title: ALSTONE

By All Your Saints in Warfare

Author: Horatio Bolton Nelson, 1823-1913 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #177 (1978) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Holy Innocents, Martyrs Lyrics: 1 By all your saints in warfare, For all your saints at rest, Your holy name, O Jesus, Forevermore be blest! For you have won the battle That they might wear the crown; And now they shine in glory Reflected from your throne. 2 (Insert the stanza appropriate to the day.) 3 Then let us praise the Father And worship God the Son And sing to God the Spirit, Eternal Three in One. Till all the ransomed number Fall down before the throne, Ascribing pow'r and glory And praise to God alone. Saints and martyr (general): 4 Apostles, prophets, martyrs, And all the noble throng Who wear the spotless raiment And raise the ceaseless song - For these passed on before us, We offer praises due And walking in their footsteps, Would live our lives for you. St. Andrew, Apostle: 5 All praise, O Lord, for Andrew, The first to welcome you, Whose witness to his brother Named you Messiah true. May we, with hearts kept open To you throughout the year, Confess to friend and neighbor Your advent ever near. St. Thomas, Apostle: 6 All praise for your apostle Whose short-lived doubtings prove Your perfect two-fold nature, And all our depth of love. We who await your coming Desire your peace, O Lord; Grant us true faith to know you, Made flesh, yet God and Lord. St. Stephen, Deacon and Martyr: 7 Praise for the first of martyrs Who saw you ready stand To help in time of torment, To plead at God's right hand. They share with him who, steadfast, In death their master own, On earth the faithful witness, On high the martyr's crown. St. John, Apostle and Evangelist: 8 For your beloved disciple Exiled to Patmos' shore, And for his faithful record, We praise you evermore. Praise for the mystic vision His words to us unfold. Instill in us his longing Your glory to behold. The Holy Innocents, Martyrs: 9 All praise for infant martyrs Whom your mysterious love Called early from their warfare To share your home above. O Rachel, cease your weeping; They rest from earthbound cares. Lord, grant us hearts as guileless And crowns as bright as theirs. The Confession of St. Peter: 10 Praise for your great apostle so eager and so bold, Thrice falling, yet repentant, Thrice charged to feed your fold. Lord, make your pastors faithful To guard your flock from harm, And hold them when they waver With your almighty arm. The Conversion of St. Paul: 11 All praise for light from heaven And for the voice of awe, All praise for glorious visions The persecutor saw. O Lord, for Paul's conversion We bless your name today; Come, lighten all our darkness, And guide us on our way. St. Matthias, Apostle: 12 Lord, your abiding presence Mysterious made the choice; For one in place of Judas The faithful now rejoice. From all such false apostles Your holy Church defend, And by your parting promise Be with us to the end. Languages: English Tune Title: KING'S LYNN

In Bethlem Town

Author: Leland Bryant Ross Hymnal: TTT-Himnaro Cigneta #524 Topics: Feast of the Holy Innocents First Line: In Bethlem town the Christ was born Lyrics: 1. In Bethlem town the Christ was born. They laid him down that starlit mor-ee-orn Amidst the corn, in swaddling gown Unbleached and worn, with hay his crown. Too-loo-ree-loo, too-loo-ree-lay, Too-loo-ree-loo: 'twas Christmas Day. 2. On hills nearby, poor shepherds graze Their flocks. The sky explodes in prai-ee-aise, With angels' lays to God on high: "Fear not, this day salvation's nigh! Too-loo-ree-loo, too-loo-ree-lirth, Good will to you, and peace on earth!" 3. The shepherds then of one accord To Bethlem ran to greet the Lor-ee-ord. They found him sleeping in a trough, Convolved in cheap, unwhitened cloth. Too-loo-ree-laid, too-loo-ree-lotched, They knelt and prayed as Mary watched. 4. From Persia far, wise Parsees came, Led by his star, to praise his name-ee-ame. They brought presents of gold and myrrh And frankincense--and beaver fur, Too-loo-ree-lurr, too-loo-ree-lee, Then went home sur-reptitiously. 5. King Herod had bequestioned them, With motive bad, about Bethlem-ee-em. The crafty sages Herod left In royal rage, of facts bereft-- Too-loo-ree-lilled, too-loo-ree-lents, So Herod killed the Innocents. 6. God said to Joseph and his wife: To Egypt go, to save your li-ee-ife. Thine ancient namesake as a slave To Egypt came your folk to save. Too-loo-ree-lask, too-loo-ree-lun, A sim'lar task awaits your son. 7. Good people all, consider ye, Whom God hath called to liberty-I-ee-- Consider well the awful cost The Scriptures tell in children lost; Too-loo-ree-low, too-loo-ree-laid, Consider now the ransoms paid. 8. God's peace to you; now merry be, For 'tis all true, of verity-I-ee. The baby born, ye know it well, That holy morn, hath vanquished Hell, Too-loo-ree-loss, too-loo-ree-lee, Upon the cross, and we are free!
