Complaint of a general Corruption of Manners; or, The Promise and Signs of Christ's coming in Judgement

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's Imitation of the Psalms of David #26 (1787) Topics: Evil times; Evil times; Evil times; Evil times First Line: Help, Lord, for men of virutue fail Lyrics: 1 Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail, Religion looses ground! The sons of violence prevail, And treacheries abound; 2 Their oaths and promises they break, Yet act the flatterer’s part; With fair deceitful lips they speak, And with a double heart. 3 If we reprove some hateful lie, They scorn our faithful word: "Are not our lips our own," they cry, "And who shall be our Lord?" 4 Scoffers appear on every side, Where a vile race of men Is rais'd to seats of power and pride, And bears the sword in vain. Pause. 5 Lord, when iniquities abound, And blasphemy grows bold, When faith is rarely to be found, And love is waxing cold: 6 Is not thy chariot hastening on? Hast thou not given this sign? May we not trust and live upon A promise so divine? 7 "Yes, saith the Lord, now will I rise, "And make th' oppressors flee; "I shall appear to their surprise, "And set my servants free." 8 Thy word, like silver seven times try'd, Through ages shall endure; The men that in thy truth confide, Shall find thy promise sure. Psalm 12

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.23 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Times evil; Evil times; Saints safety in evil times First Line: Lord, if thou dost not soon appear Lyrics: Lord, if thou dost not soon appear, Virtue and truth will fly away; A faithful man amongst us here Will scarce be found, if thou delay. The whole discourse, when neighbors meet, Is filled with trifles loose and vain; Their lips are flattery and deceit, And their proud language is profane. But lips that with deceit abound Shall not maintain their triumph long; The God of vengeance will confound The flattering and blaspheming tongue. "Yet shall our words be free," they cry; "Our tongues shall be controlled by none: Where is the Lord will ask us why? Or say our lips are not our own?" The Lord, who sees the poor oppressed, And hears th' oppressor's haughty strain, Will rise to give his children rest, Nor shall they trust his word in vain. Thy word, O Lord, though often tried, Void of deceit shall still appear; Not silver, sev'n times purified From dross and mixture, shines so clear. Thy grace shall in the darkest hour Defend the holy soul from harm; Though when the vilest men have power, On every side will sinners swarm. Scripture: Psalm 12 Languages: English

Eternal God Transcending Time

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Hymnal: Worship and Song #3030 (2011) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Times; Times Lyrics: 1 Eternal God transcending time, yet mindful of the fears, the hopes, the questions raised for us by ever changing years: so guide us through our pilgrim days that we may find a home where justice, truth, and mercy meet, fulfilled in your shalom. 2 Incarnate God revealed in time, true Word in flesh retold, who marked the years from birth to death, then rose to break death's hold: by your becoming one with us, help us to know and claim the unity of all baptized in your redeeming name. 3 Life breathing God enliv'ning time, awaking heart and tongue, inspiring prophets, bringing hope, consoling old and young: draw us to those denied your gifts by bias, want, or strife, convert our wills and form through us new channels of your life. 4 Great Triune God, so bless the time entrusted to our care, that all our varied ministries may form a common prayer; then when time ceases, bring us where divisions are undone, that in your presence, joined in praise, at last we may be one. Descend from heaven, immortal Dove

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #344 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Times evil; Evil times; Saints safety in evil times Lyrics: Descend from heav'n, immortal Dove, Stoop down and take us on thy wings, And mount and bear us far above The reach of these inferior things: Beyond, beyond this lower sky, Up where eternal ages roll; Where solid pleasures never die, And fruits immortal feast the soul. O for a sight, a pleasing sight Of our Almighty Father's throne! There sits our Savior crowned with light, Clothed in a body like our own. Adoring saints around him stand, And thrones and powers before him fall; The God shines gracious through the man, And sheds sweet glories on them all. O what amazing joys they feel While to their golden harps they sing, And sit on every heav'nly hill, And spread the triumphs of their King! When shall the day, dear Lord, appear, That I shall mount to dwell above, And stand and bow amongst them there, And view thy face, and sing, and love? Scripture: Psalm 12 Languages: English
