Author: Brian Wren (b. 1936) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #620a (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Other Saints and Festivals Barnabas the Apostle; Other Saints and Festivals Luke the Evangelist Lyrics: 1 Dear Christ, uplifted from the earth, your arms stretched out above through every culture, every birth, to draw an answering love. 2 Still east and west your love extends and always, near and far, you call and claim us as your friends and love us as we are. 3 Where age and gender, class and race, divides us to our shame, you see a person and a face, a neighbour with a name. 4 May we, accepted as we are, yet called in grace to grow, reach out to others, near and far, your healing love to show. I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton (1857-1932) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #666 (2013) Topics: Other Saints and Festivals St Stephen; Other Saints and Festivals Joseph of Nazareth Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Then let love inspire each breast. Members — on our Head depending, light — reflecting him, our Sun, brethren — his commands attending, we in him, our Lord, are one. 2 Come then, come, O flock of Jesus, covenant with him anew; unto him, who conquered for us, pledge we love and service true; and should our love's union holy firmly linked no more remain, wait ye at his footstool lowly, till he draw it close again. 3 Grant, Lord, that with thy direction "Love each other" we comply. aiming with unfeigned affection thy love to exemplify; let our mutual love be glowing, thus the world will plainly see that we, as on one stem growing, living branches are in thee. 4 O that such may be our union as thine with the Father is, and not one of our communion e'er forsake the path of bliss; may our light break forth with brightness, from thy light reflected shine; thus the world will bear us witness that we, Lord, are truly thine. In our day of Thanksgiving one psalm let us offer

Author: William Draper, 1855-1933 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #208 (1986) Meter: 12.11.12.11 Topics: Dedication Festival; Patronal Festival; The Christian Year Festivals and Other Holy Days: Proper Lyrics: 1 In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer For the saints who before us have found their reward; When the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, But now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord. 2 In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, He called them away from our worship below; But not till his love, at the font and the altar, Had girt them with grace for the way they should go. 3 These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, And dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; Yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, And still they were seeking the city of God. 4 Sing praise then, for all who here sought and here found Him, Whose journey is ended, whose perils are past: They believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, Where the clouds of earth’s sorrows are lifted at last.
