Hail to God's Own Anointed

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Voices United #30 (1996) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Freedom Lyrics: 1 Hail to God's own anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, God's reign on earth begun! Christ comes to break oppression, to set the captive free; to take away transgression, and rule in equity. 2 Christ comes with justice surely to those who suffer wrong, to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong, to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in his sight. 3 Christ shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth. Before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go, and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. 4 To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend, his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove. His name shall stand for ever: that name to us is Love. Languages: English Tune Title: CRÜGER

When God First Brought Us Back (Cuando el Señor desde el destierro)

Daw, Jr., b. 1944; Carlos Colón, b. 1966; María Eugenia Cornou, b. 1969; Dianne Zandstra, b. 1952 Hymnal: Santo, Santo, Santo #32 (2019) Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Topics: Freedom First Line: When God first brought us back from exile (Cuando el Señor desde el destierro) Lyrics: 1 When God first brought us back from exile, We were as dazed as those who dream. Then were our mouths brimming with laughter; Joy from our lips gushed like a stream. The godless cried in envious wonder, “Look what the Lord has done for them!” Indeed our God has greatly blessed us; Rejoice and sing, Jerusalem! 2 Once more, O Lord, restore your people; Come with your saving help again, As to the brook-beds in the desert You bring the sweet, reviving rain. Let those who sow with tears and sighing Sing as they reap and joy proclaim; May those who weep when seed is scattered Gather their sheaves and praise your name. Scripture: Ezra 1 Languages: English; Spanish Tune Title: WAYFARING STRANGER

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Author: James W. Johnson, 1871-1938 Hymnal: Lift Up Your Hearts #44 (2013) Meter: 6.6.10.6.6.10.14.14.6.6.10 Topics: Freedom Lyrics: 1 Lift every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty; let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won. 2 Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died; yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet come to the place for which our people sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered; we have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. 3 God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; thou who hast, by thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee; shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand, true to our God, true to our native land. There's a Wideness in God's Mercy

Author: Frederick W. Faber, 1814-1863 Hymnal: Hymns for a Pilgrim People #45 (2007) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Freedom First Line: There's a wideness in God's mercy Lyrics: 1 There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment giv'n. 2 For the love of God is broader Than the measure of man's mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple, We should take Him at His word; And our lives would be all sunshine In the sweetness of our Lord. 3 Troubled souls, why will you scatter Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander From a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior, There is healing in His blood. Amen. God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength

Hymnal: Psalms for All Seasons #46A (2012) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Freedom from Fear Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and our strength, our ever present aid, and therefore, though the earth be moved, we will not be afraid-- though hills into the seas be cast, though foaming billows roar, though all the mighty billows shake the mountains on the shore. 2 A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, the holy place wherein the LORD Most High has his abode. Since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand; for God will hasten to her aid when trouble is at hand. 3 The nations rage, the kingdoms move, but when his voice was heard, earth melts with trembling fear before the thunder of his word. The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. 4 O come and see what wondrous works the hand of God has done; come, see what desolation great he brings beneath the sun. In every corner of the earth he causes wars to cease; the weapons of the strong destroyed, he makes abiding peace. 5 "Be still and know that I am God, the LORD whom all must claim; and every nation of the earth shall magnify my name." The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. Scripture: Psalm 46 Tune Title: NOEL (GERARD)

God Is Our Refuge and Strength

Hymnal: Psalms for All Seasons #46E (2012) Topics: Freedom from Fear Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; 2 Though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 3 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; God shall help her at the break of day. 4 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 5 Come now and look upon the works of the LORD, what awesome things he has done on earth. It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. 6 "Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Scripture: Psalm 46 Tune Title: [God is our refuge and strength]
