Deliverance from Oppression and Falsehood; or God's Care of his People in answer to Faith and Prayer

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #101 (1786) Topics: Deliverance from oppression and falsehood; Falsehood and Oppression; Deliverance from oppression and falsehood; Falsehood and Oppression First Line: O thou, whose justice reigns on high Lyrics: 1 O thou, whose justice reigns on high, And makes th' oppressor cease, Behold how envious sinners try To vex and break my peace. 2 The sons of violence and lies Join to devour me, Lord; But as my hourly dangers rise, My refuge is thy word. 3 In God most holy, just, and true, I have repos'd my trust; Nor will I fear what flesh can do, The offspring of the dust. 4 They wrest my words to mischief still, Charge me with unknown faults; For mischiefs all their counsels fill, And malice all their thoughts. 5 Shall they escape without thy frown? Must their devices stand? O cast the haughty sinner down, And let him know thy hand! Pause. 6 God sees the sorrows of his saints, Their groans affect his ears; Thy mercy counts my just complaints, And numbers all my tears. 7 When to thy throne I raise my cry The wicked fear and flee; So swift is prayer to reach the sky, So near is God to me. 8 In thee, most holy, just and true, I have repos'd my trust; Nor will I fear what man can do, The offspring of the dust. 9 Thy solemn vows are on me, Lord, Thou shalt receive my praise; I’ll sing, how faithful is thy word! How righteous all thy ways! 10 Thou hast secur'd my soul from death, Oh set thy prisoner free, That heart and hand, and life and breath May be employ'd for thee. The Saint's Safety and Hope in evil Times: Or, Sins of the Tongue complained of, viz. Blasphemy, Falshood, etc.

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #22a (1786) Topics: Falsehood and Oppression; Falsehood and Oppression First Line: Almighty God, appear and save! Lyrics: 1 Almighty God, appear and save! For vice and vanity prevail: The godly perish in the grave, The just depart, the faithful fail. 2 The whole discourse, when crouds are met, Is fill'd with trifles loose and vain; Their lips are flattery and deceit, And their proud language is profane. 3 But lips that with deceit abound, Shall not maintain their triumph long: The God of vengeance will confound The flattering and blaspheming tongue. 4 Yet shall our words be free, they cry, Our tongues shall be controul'd by none: Where is the Lord will ask us why? Or say, our lips are not our own? 5 The Lord, who sees the poor opprest, And hears th' oppressor's haughty strain, Will rise to give his children rest, Nor shall they trust his word in vain. 6 Thy word, O Lord, though often try'd, Void of deceit shall still appear; Not silver, seven times purify'd From dross and mixture, shines so clear. 7 Thy grace shall in the darkest hour Defend the from danger and surprise; Tho' when the vilest men have power, On every side oppressors rise. Complaint of a general Corruption of Manners; or, The Promise and Signs of Christ's coming in Judgement

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #22b (1786) Topics: Falsehood and Oppression; Falsehood and Oppression First Line: Help, Lord, for men of virutue fail Lyrics: 1 Help, Lord, for men of virtue fail, Religion looses ground! The sons of violence prevail, And treacheries abound; 2 Their oaths and promises they break, Yet act the flatterer’s part; With fair deceitful lips they speak, And with a double heart. 3 If we reprove some hateful lie, They scorn our faithful word: "Are not our lips our own," they cry, "And who shall be our Lord?" 4 Scoffers appear on every side, Where a vile race of men Is rais'd to seats of power and pride, And bears the sword in vain. Pause. 5 Lord, when iniquities abound, And blasphemy grows bold, When faith is rarely to be found, And love is waxing cold: 6 Is not thy chariot hastening on? Hast thou not given this sign? May we not trust and live upon A promise so divine? 7 "Yes, saith the Lord, now will I rise, "And make th' oppressors flee; "I shall appear to their surprise, "And set my servants free." 8 Thy word, like silver seven times try'd, Through ages shall endure; The men that in thy truth confide, Shall find thy promise sure.
